 - Newspaper Article (Richfield Springs Mercury, NY, November 7, 1901)
Our entire community is saddened by the deep affliction which has befallen the surviving members of the Hoffman homestead. The family until a week ago consisted of Mr. and Mrs. W. E. Hoffman, better known as Squire Hoffman, their son, Herbert Hoffman, his wife and two children, Rodrick, aged about five, and Lora, aged three. Two weeks ago W. E. Hoffman and his son were suffering from sore throat. Last Monday the two children became ill and Tuesday night a doctor was summoned. Had there been any suspicion of the nature of the ailment that fatal delay would surely have been shunned. Mrs. Herbert was the next victim to yield to the malady. Thursday little Lora died, Friday Mrs. Herbert Hoffman died and Saturday night came the announcement of the illness of Mrs. W. E. Hoffman and the death of Rodriok. The family is well known in this vicinity, as their ancestors, the Getmans, Haners, Barringers and Tisdales, were among the pioneers of the town over a century ago, and all hearts go out to them in their sad home. Friday the remains of the little daughter were conveyed to the family plot in the Colombia cemetery, and deposited beside that of the first-born, and Sunday the two hearses bearing the remains of Mrs.Herbert Hoffman and the young son Rodrick wended their way into the cemetery, while pastor and people joined in prayer for the bereaved household.

 - Newspaper Article (Richfied Springs Mercury, NY, Thursday, April 3, 1924)
The trite saying that "Some days must be dark and dreary," was verified in the life of Herbert Hoffman, whose funeral was held in the M. E. Church Saturday at 2 p. m. The pouring rain, at that hour did not deter a goodly number from assemblying. All about the casket were exquisite floral pieces, the testimonial of many friends. Rev. Mr. Nichols' service was an appeal to the living to chose the better part. The choir rendered two appropriate selections and another life history was ended. The ancestry of the deceased were pioneers of Columbia, where the later generations have remained, and here the deceased, who would have reached the 50th milestone in August, had passed his life.
He married Bertha Huntley and lived with his parents Squire and Ellen Barringer Hoffman. Their first sorrow was the loss of a child. Then in 1901 the deceased was the victim of quinsey, while with their two children diphtheria developed and in five days the children, Roderick, Mrs. Herbert Hoffman and lastly Mrs. Hoffman, Sr., were laid to rest and the home left desolate.
The father and son lived out their length of days in the lonely home. When the father sickened he was tenderly cared for by the son until he neared the end. Herbert sold the homestead which was burned a year ago. He had been ill in a hospital and when dismissed went to the home of a cousin, Mrs. Nettie Peters, in Chittenango, where his death occurred at the going down of the sun. March 25. 1924. and the name Hoffman will henceforth be only a memory.
