A BAD BLOW.—Robert Sherman, of Deerfleld, was arrested by Sheriff Myers yesterday charged with making a serious assault on James P. Bellinger on the Deerfield road beyond Miller's bridge Wednesday, March 9. The trouble grew out of a collision between two wagons occupied by the parties named. Bellinger alleges that Sherman struck him over the head with the butt of a heavily loaded whip and knocked him down. Dr. Craig attended him, and Sherman was arrested on order of Justice Harter, of Deerfield. The examination was set down fon to-day. During the week Bellinger, who is a nephew of Abram Weaver, and lives with him, became worse, and Dr. Wolcott. of Utica, was called. He found Bellinger's skull fractured on the right side. Mr. Bellinger brings suit against Sherman for $3,000 damages for the assault thro S. J. Barrows, of Utica. John Doyle and William D. Pittock became sureties for Sherman in the sum of $1,000 pending Bellinger's recovery so as to appear against Sherman.

Richfield Springs. June 5. -John Francis Getman died yesterday afternoon at the home of his nephew, Osborne Getman, where he had been ill for several years. While Mr. Getman had not been active in the affairs of the village for several years, he was an important factor in its life at one time. His ancestors came from New England to the Mohawk Valley in 1743 [sic] and settled near Johnstown, Tryon County, and built a saw and grist mill. Four members of the Getman family became soldiers in the revolutionary war one being a captain.
Mr. Getman was born in the town of Columbia, Herkimer County in 1837. In early life he showed remarkable skill and aptitude for mechanics and in his shop on the farm, made almost the first of the Portland cutters. He came to Richfield Springs in the autumn of 1860 and in 1861 he built a double store and photograph gallery on the east side of Lake street. In part of this building, in 1883, James A. Storer had a bookstore and telegraph office; This building now stands on the west side of Lake street at the corner of James street and is occupied by C. E. Caney and Charles Osterhout. In the other part of the building, the Richfield Springs Mercury was first published. In 1866 Mr. Getman sold the photograph gallery to Nelson S. Bowdish; in 1867 he erected the large building known as the Central Drug Store Building, and in 1868 opened the Central Drug Store, which he conducted for 20 years in the same location.
Mr. Getman became a member of St. Johns Episcopal Church in 1862; was elected vestryman and served as vestryman and warden until 1914 when he resigned on account of ill health. For many years he was chairman of the Building Committee and the new church, erected in 1879, the parish house and rectory were all built under his supervision. The altar chancel rail and reredos in the chapel were made by Mr. Getman from original designs.
In 1873 Mr. Getman married Miss Mary M. Tunnicliffe. In 1888 he sold his drug business and acted as assistant manager of the well-known Tunnicliffe Cottage until its destruction by fire in 1913. In 1865 Mr. Getman became a member of Richfield Springs Lodge, No 48 F. & A. M., and successfully filled the various offices in the lodge, including that of master for three years. He personally made much of the furniture and ornaments of the lodge. In 1869 Mr. Getman joined Richfield Springs Chapter. No. 222 F. & A. M., and has held many important offices in that organization. He had always been a public spirited citizen, always working for the welfare of the community in which he lived. He was president of the Board of Health for 10 years and framed many important sanitary measures. He was an amateur mechanic of great skill. His shop contained a fine collection of machines and tools, many of which were made by himself and are models of utility and fine-workmanship. In 1903 Mr. Getman married for the second time Mrs. Fanny Harrington, nee Tunnicliffe, who died in 1906. By all the habitues of the old Tunnicliffe Cottage Mr. Getman will be remembered for his many kindnesses, his efficient management and his cleverness. This popular boarding house drew an advantageous clientele every year, and its burning, late in December, 1913. was a great loss. Since that time he had been tenderly cared for a the home of his nephew, where he died. The funeral arrangements have not been made, but it will be held in St. John's Church, which he served so long, so faithfully and so lovingly, later in the week.
The surviving relatives are a brother; Delos Getman of Richfield Springs; a sister, Mrs. Armenda Griffin of Mount Kisco, and several nieces and nephews, , including Mrs. Henry Lane, Mrs. H. E. Schooley, Miss Mae Llewellyn, Frank Llewellyn of Richfield Springs; Ellsworth D. Vosburgh, Utica; Mrs. Herbert Fitch, Rome; Mrs. Thomas Smith, White Plains; Alonzo Vosburgh, Fultonville.

John F. Getman - After being an invalid for more than two years, John F. Getman died at the home of his nephew, O. D. Getman, at Richfield Springs on Monday afternoon. Mr. Getman had been a resident of that place fifty-seven years during, which period he had seen most of the growth of his adopted home, where he had made himself an enviable name by his public spirit.
He was twice married, in 1873 to Miss Mary Tunnicliff, with whom he was for many years a proprietor of the well-known Tunnicliff Cottage. In 1903 he married Mrs. Fanny Tunnicliff Harrington, who died in 1908. A little while before the burning of Tunnicliff Cottage, his health failed somewhat, and he rapidly declined after that lamentable event. His months of feebleness were lightened greatly by the kind and efficient ministrations of his nephew and wife, who were devoted to his comfort in every possible way.
During his years of strength he was an ardent Mason and a member of the local Masonic lodge and of the Royal Arch Chapter, holding in each body responsible and prominent positions. In the Protestant Episcopal communion he found a religious home, in whose functions he took high-church offices. He was a Republican. In village affairs he was most prominent in health matters; and was the head of the local health board many years. The funeral was held in St. John's church, Wednesday afternoon and interment made Lakeview in charge of the Masonic fraternity. After life's fitful fever of eighty years, his work is done! — Our Richfield Springs Reporter.- Obituary (Utica Herald-Dispatch, NY, Tuesday, June 5, 1917)

Early Monday morning Mrs. Mary Tunnicliff Getman, wife of John F. Getman, passed on to another world. Mrs. Getman was born in this place 82 years ago, and during most of those years was a resident of this village. For nearly half a hundred years Mrs. Getman was identified with the interests and successes of the Tunnicliff cottage, one of Richfield's famous hostelries. Philanthropy was her predominant characteristic; her benefactions will never all be known. She let not her left hand know of the deeds of the right. As a member of St. John's communion she was always zealous and consistent. Her near survivors are her husband and her niece, Mrs. F. W. Townsend, of Canton, N. Y. The funeral was held Wednesday afternoon, the Rev. L. M. Cooke officiating. Our Richfield Springs Reporter.- Obituary (Utica Observer-Dispatch, NY, Monday, June 15, 1903)

For many years she was the proprietor of Tunnicliff Lawn, one of Richfield's pleasantest smaller boarding houses; in 1905 she was married to Mr. Getman and since then has been associated with him in the manegment of the Tunnicliff cottage. To all who were ill or in trouble her sympathy and help were always freely given and her kindness will be gratefully remembeard by those to whom it was shown.
