FORT PLAIN. - April 3.—Mr. and Mrs. Lewis Birk are the parents of a daughter, born yesterday.- Obituary (Courier-Standard-Enterprise, Canajoharie-Fort Plain, NY, Wednesday, December 31, 1986)
A Fort Plain woman is dead following a fire at her home Christmas night.
Margaret Birk, 74, 16 Reid St.. died of smoke inhalation around 8 p.m. According to fire officials, the blaze was discovered by a passing Van Hornesville volunteer firefighter. He tried to enter the home, but was forced back by heat and thick.
Fort Plain firefighters arriving at the scene found Birk just inside the door of the house. Attempts to resucitate the woman failed. Dave Bowman, Fort Plain fire chief, said it is believed she was trying to escape the fire when she was overcome by smoke and superheated air.
The smoke hampered firefighters' efforts. Bowman said that the cool mist that was falling that night prevented the smoke from rising. Instead, the smoke stayed nearer to the ground.
Fire officials believe the fire started in a hallway between the kitchen and living room. Bowman said, however, it is not clear if the fire was started by careless smoking or spontaneous combustion. The house, he said, was filled with old newspapers and magazines. Birk was also storing cat litter, turpentine and other chemicals in the home, he said.
Bowman said fire officials believe Birk was sleeping in a chair in the living room when the fire broke out. Awaking to a room filled with smoke, she apparently stood up, breathing in the smoke and heated air.
Birk, a retired secretary, lived alone. Although neighbors reported Bilk kept several cats and other pets at the house, Bowman said firefighters found no animals.
About 60 firefighters from Fort Plain and Canajoharie responded to the fire. Bowman said units remained at the scene until 2 a.m. the next day. The fire was contained to the house. No other injuries were reported.
