Little Falls, Nov. 27.—The uncertainty of this life, balanced precariously on the slender thread between earth and eternity, was emphasized by the railroad tragedy at Palatine Bridge Saturday evenlng that claimed the life of D. Curtis Dygert, 46 of 121 South Edwards avenue, Syracuse, former resident of this city. Mr. Dygert, a man in the prime of life and a veteran brakeman on the New York Central, was instantly killed when struck by a passing freight, which knocked him from a perch to which he was clinging on the train to which he was attached. The fatality occurred at 6,15 and the news of it, received here soon afterwards, shocked and grieved relatives and friends in this city where Mr. Dygert was well known.
Deceased was on east bound freight N. Y. 4 when he met his tragic fate. His train stopped at the station in Palatine Bridge because of a hot journal. Mr. Dygert, head brakeman, and Brakeman Howard Andrews of Syracuse started climbing up the side of one of the box cars. Dygert being ahead. The victim had ascended far enough for him to set his lantern on top of the car, this being a custom of brakemen, who are then free to use both hands in supporting themselves.
In the meantime, a fast west bound freight bore down upon them suddenly. Andrews quickly swung himself around and between the bumpers, thus out of danger. He believed that his fellow workman was far enough up the ladder to hoist himself to the top of the car and safety, but such was not the case. The cab of the passing engine struck Mr. Dygert, and knocked him down between the two trains, snuffing out his life immediately. He was not run over, however.
Members of the crew of his train hurried to his side and Dr. William
R. Rathbun of Canajoharie was called, but the unfortunate man was beyond mortal aid. Coroner Congdon of Fort Plain was summoned and Montgomery county sheriff's office at Fonda was notified. County Investigator Gerald Nellis responded to the call.
The remains were taken to the Young undertaking parlors in Canajoharie and were removed Sunday to the victim's home in Syracuse.
Curtis Dygert was an industrious and dependable employee of the New York Central, having been in the employ of the railroad for 23 years. He was born in this city January 10, 1888, the son of Emery and the late Mary Sanders Dygert, substantial local residents. He received his education in the local schools.
While he resided here Mr. Dygert was employed for some years at Andrew Little lumber establishment. Mr. Dygert left Little Falls about 24 years ago, moving to Syracuse where he made his residence ever since.
He married Miss Rena Nellis of St. Johnsville who survives, with one son Glen of Syracuse. A sad coincidence is that the son left, home Friday for California, and efforts were being made today to locate him and inform him of his father's death. His mother received a letter Saturday that Glen sent, from Cleveland. It informed her that he would write from Chicago, his next stop where he planned to put up for a day at the Y. M. C. A, Chicago police have been requested to watch all bus and railroad terminals and to get in touch with the Y there in an attempt to locate the young man.
Deceased was a member of Onondaga lodge of Masons, No. 802, East Syracuse and also a member of the trainmen's brotherhood. He was pleasant and likeable man with a host of friends who mourn his death.
Surviving besides the wife and son are the aged father, Emory Dygert of Utica and three brothers, Graydon and Arthur of this city and Harry of Washington, D. C.
Unaware of his father's death, Glen Dygert, 21 year old son of D. Curtis Dygert, who was killed by a freight train at Palatine Bridge Saturday evening, returned to his home in Syracuse, Monday evening.
A prayer service was held at the Dygert home in Syracuse at 10 o'clock this morning after which the body was brought to this village where friends may view the body at the Lull funeral parlors at 1:30 p, m. The funeral will be held there at 2 o'clock with the St. Johnsville lodge of Masons in charge.
