Funeral services for Ethel C Getman, 83, of 246 Champion St., was held Monday, Feb. 17 at St. James Church, Carthage, with the Rev. James T. Spenard, officiating. Spring burial will be in Swinburne Cemetery, Deer River.
Mrs. Getman died Friday, Feb. 14 at Carthage Area Hospital after an extended illness.
Contributions may be made to the St. James Church building fund.
Surviving are three sons, Mayor Donald F. Getman, West Carthage, Richard K., Antwerp, and Terry L., West Carthage. Two brothers, Francis and Patrick Sullivan, and two sisters, Elizabeth Taylor and Ruth Peebles, died before her.
Mrs. Getman was born in Greig on Sept. 23, 1908, a daughter Frank and Pearl Lovejoy Sullivan. She attended area schools.
She married Franklin C. Getman on July 4, 1927, in Carthage. In 1935, the marriage was blessed at St James Church by the Rev. J.P. Mann.
Mr. Getman, a retired St. Regis Paper Mill employee, died May 5, 1991. Mrs. Getman was formerly employed at Fort Drum as a domestic, taught knitting at the former West Carthage High School and drove school bus for the Champion School District.
She was widely known for her knitting and she often played Santa Claus and the Easter Bunny at local hospitals. Mrs. Getman was a member of Carthage Grange No. 69, the Daughters of Isabella, the VIP and Brady Acres Senior Citizens groups, past president of the West Carthage PTA, member of the Pleasant Lake Birthday Club and the Carthage Civic Club and past president of the Women's Republican Committee 1927.

Escorted by her father, the bride wore a peau de soie gown trimmed with Alencon lace. Her veil was attached to a crown with rose design matching the lace on her gown. She carried a cascade bouquet of minature white carnations and pink sweet heart roses.
Karen Hirsch was maid of honor. Miss Cindy Cole and Mrs. Sarah LaLonde were bridesmaids.
James Zecher, Jr., brother of the bride, and Donald Getman, brother of the bridegroom, were ushers.
Mrs. Getman was graduated from Augustinian Academy in 1969 and was employed at Bomax, Inc., Watertown.
Mr. Getman, a Carthage Central, Junior-Senior High School graduate, is employed at St. Regis Paper Co., Deferiet.
Following a trip to Washington, D.C.., the couple will live at 19 Champion St.

WEST CARTHAGE — The funeral for Leon F. Getman Sr., 91, of 22 N. Jefferson St., will be at 8 p.m. Friday at Bezanilla-McGraw Funeral Home, Carthage, with Deacon Richard J. Staab officiating. Burial will be in St. James Cemetery, Carthage. Mr. Getman died Tuesday at his home. Calling hours will be from 4 to 8 p.m. Friday at the funeral home, where members of Elks Lodge 1762 will hold a memorial service at 6:30 p.m.
He worked in the plumbing and heating business of William Spaulding in his early years. He owned and operated Getman Plumbing & Heating for more than 20 years. In 1972 , he became an operator of the wastewater treatment plant at Fort Drum, retiring in February 1986. Born March 19, 1918, in Antwerp, son of Ferd and Vina Mallett Getman, he graduated in 1936 from West Carthage High School. He married Ruth L. Hynes on Feb. 14, 1948, in the rectory of St. James Church. Mrs. Getman, a former secretary for Crown Zellerbach Corp., died Nov. 2, 1990.
Mr. Getman was a former master mason of F.&A.M. Lodge 158, Carthage, where he was raised on April 14, 1946, a life member of Benevolent and Protective Order of the Elks Lodge 1762, Carthage, and a member of Carlowden Country Club, Denmark, where he scored a hole in one in June 1992. He was a former member of Upper Montague Hunting Club and enjoyed golf, hunting, fishing, cards and reading.
Surviving are two daughters and their husbands, Christine and Michael Potter, Tucson, Ariz., and Grace and Thomas Sauter, West Carthage; two sons and their wives, Leon F. Jr. and Gaylene, Herkimer, and Russell and Shelley, Fairport; his companion, Eileen Harris, Rutland; a brother-in-law, Matthew Hynes, Oil City, Pa.; a sister-in-law, Belle Getman, West Carthage, and nine grandchildren. A son, Gregory John, died in 1954. A sister, Grace Breset, and five brothers, John, Franklin, George, Ernest and Robert, also died before him.

The bride wore a selfstyled gown of white Qiana with a scoop neckline with applique trim, cap sleeves and a mantilla-style veil of organdy, edged with applique trim. She carried a bouquet of white long-stem roses with apringri, baby's breath and a white bow.
Miss Grace E. Getman. Carthage, sister of the bride, was maid of honor. Donald N. Potter. Jr., North Bangor, was his brother's best man.
After a reception at the Carthage Elks Club, the couple will leave on a camping trip.
Mrs. Potter, a 1972 graduate of Carthage Central School, was graduated with honors from Oneonta State University College in December with a bachelor of science degree and is employed as director of the Twin Village Pool Commission, Carthage.
Mr. Potter is a 1972 graduate of Carthage Central School, received an associate degree with honors from Delhi ATC and is employed by Pratt Street. Inc., Construction Co.
The couple will live at Champion.

WEST CARTHAGE — Belle Smith Getman, 87, 43 North Jefferson St., died Monday morning, February 20, 2012 at the Carthage Area Hospital, where she had been a patient for a short time.
Born in West Carthage on May 31, 1924, the daughter of William & Connie Burgess Smith. She graduated from West Carthage High School with the Class of 1942. She married Robert E."Riley" Getman on April 21, 1946. She was employed for 8 years by GLG and for 24 years as the Secretary to the Administrator of the Carthage Central School District, until her retirement in 1983. She was a member of the United Community Church, Carthage.
Mrs. Getman is survived by her son, Lonnie Getman, Carthage, her daughter, Lou Ann Smith, West Carthage, four grandchildren and several nieces and nephews.
She is predeceased by her brothers, James, Beecher and Bion Smith.
A funeral service will be held on Friday evening at 7:00 PM in the Chapel of the Lundy Funeral Home & Cremation Service, Inc., 500 State St., Carthage, with the Rev. Jane Wagner officiating. Burial will be in Hillside Cemetery, Champion. Visitation will be held on Friday at the Funeral Home, prior to the service, from 5:00 – 7:00 PM.

ALEXANDRIA BAY .— Carl W. Kelsey 69, a retired schoolteacher of R.D. Clayton, died Sunday night at the E.J. Noble Hospital here where he had been in the extensive care, unit since Thursday.
The funearal for Mr. Kelsey will be at 2 p.m. Wednesday at the Giltz Funeral Home, Alexandria Bay, Rev. Edgar Herter of; the Plessis United Methodist/Church officiating.

He was born in Antwerp, Aug. 24, 1904, the son of Jeremy and Effie Beers Kelsey.
He graduated from Theresa Schools and Clarkson College.
He taught in Pleasantville schools for many years and for seven years at the Halstead School in Yonkers.
He married Arlene Lambet of Theresa, Sept. 4, 1925, in Sodus.
After his retirement in June 1967, he moved to Fisher's Landing.

Barbara A. Hyde, 83, formerly of Fifth Ave. Oswego, passed away March 16, 2010 at St. Luke's Health Services. Born in Carthage, NY, she was the daughter of the late Herman and Wylma (Smith) Getman. She graduated from Carthage High School and Faxton School of Nursing in Utica, NY. Barb worked at the Oswego Hospital for over 30 years in the Maternity Ward and also with Oswego County OBGYN. She was a member of the Ladies Auxillary at the VFW.
Surviving is her children, Judy (Gus) Di Marco of Oswego, their children, Ryan & Angela Zarnowski and Lauren Di Marco; Patty (Eric) Lewis of Minetto, their children, Gregory and Christopher Lewis; David (JoHann) Hyde of Mexico City, their children, John, Nathan, Jenny, Jessica and Daniel Hyde; Donna (Thomas) Dowling of Ballston Spa, NY, their children, Lucas and Alise; Stephen (Sarah) Hyde of Virginia, their children, Julia and Gabe Hyde; two great-grandchildren, Austin and Isabella.
She was predeceased by her husband, Richard F. Hyde in 1983.
Funeral Services will be held 11 a.m. Saturday at the Nelson Funeral Home. Spring burial will be in Rural Cemetery.

OSWEGO - Richard F. Hyde, 59, of 107 Fifth Ave. died unexpectedly on Dec. 24 after being stricken ill at his home.
He was the husband of Barbara Getman Hyde.
Born in Watertown on Oct. 12, 1924, he was the son of Charles and Ida Shaw Hyde. He was educated in Watertown schools.
Mr. Hyde was employed at Alcan Corporation in Scriba in the air conditioning and refrigeration department.
He was a veteran of World War II, having served in the U.S. Army.
He was a member of the Southwest Baptist Church.
Surviving are his wife. Barbara, who is a nurse at the Oswego Hospital; three daughters, Mrs, Jan (Judy) Zarnowski and Mrs. Erik (Pat) Lewis of
Oswego, and Miss Donna Hyde, a student at SUNY at Potsdam: two sons, David, a student of the Baptist Bible College in Springfield, Mass., and Stephen, who lives at home: three brothers. Edward of Watertown, Frank of New York City, and Frederick of Bowie, Md.: one sister. Mrs. Agnes McKinley of Watertown; five grandchildren and several nieces and nephews.
Services will be Wednesday at 11 a.m. in the Nelson Funeral Home.
Burial will be at Rural Cemetery.

PHILADELPHIA — Jennie May Cooper, 92, a resident of Meadow Brook Manor, Hannibal, formerly of Main Street, Philadelphia, NY died at Oswego Hospital late Saturday evening, June 19, 2010 where she was a patient.Born December 10, 1917 in Philadelphia, NY, she was the daughter of Alburtis and Marion Dickinson Chase and graduated from Philadelphia High School in 1935. She also graduated from the State School of Agriculture in Canton, in 1937 with a degree in Home Economics, where she was a member of the Alpha Chi Omicron Sorority.
She was married to Roland Rudes. The marriage ended in divorce. She married Shirley C. Cooper on October 28, 1948 at the Antwerp Congregational Church. Mr. Cooper died November 7, 1999.
Mrs. Cooper was employed with the Philadelphia High School, later Philadelphia Elementary School from 1948 to the late 1970's as a cook.
She enjoyed crocheting, needlepoint, embroidery, cooking, playing cards and was an avid reader.
Survivors include a grandson, Gregory Rudes and his girlfriend, Tracy Seeber, Fulton; a daughter-in-law, Helen Rudes, Fulton; a niece, Janice Felder, Redwood; 3 great-nieces; 2 great-great-nieces; and a great-great-nephew.
Besides her husband, a son, David, a brother, Alburtis, Jr., and a sister, Claire Harrington died before her.
The funeral will be 4 p.m. Wednesday at Frederick Bros. Funeral Home, Inc., Theresa with Rev. Barry Proctor of the Indian River Baptist Church, Philadelphia officiating. Burial will be at Felts Mills Cemetery.

Carthage. - Tragedy, which claimed the life of a 20-year-old woman and her husband, marked the second wedding anniversary of Mr. and Mrs. William Powers, of Carthage, Sunday.
Mrs. Powers was shot and killed by her husband, after a dispute at the home of her mother, Western Ave., as her parent was preparing a chicken dinner in honor of the occasion.
Powers, 31, chef at a local diner, then turned his revolver on himself.
He died several hours later in the local hospital.
The couple married in Copenhagen N. Y. when the bride was attending high school, was estranged but continued on friendly terms.
Powers according to reports furnished police, wnet to the Keenan home earl Sunday morning and escorted his wife to her work at the Palace Restaurant. He returned shortly with provisions for the anniversary dinner and awaited the return of his wife.
Upon her entrance Powers asked her to accompany hime upstaris for a conversation away from other members of the family. Within a few minutes five shots were heard in a bedroom. Mrs. Powers was discovered dan and Powers was taken by police to the hospital where he died.
Powers a native of Yonkers, formerly was cook in the CCC camp at Munne Corners.
Mrs. Powers had worked as a domestic at a local plant, ater accepting the position at the restauran. She is survived by her widowed mother, an employee of a local mill, two brothers, James and Elmer, and a sister, Marsha.
