ST JOHNSVILLE. Aug. 23.-Leo Smullens, 45, formerly of Gloversville. who had been residing in this village for the past month following a long illness, apparently committed suicide by hanging in a shop at the home of his brother, John Smullens, 75 First Avenue, this village. He had been dead only a short time when discovered by his brother, who went to the shop to call him for lunch.
Dr. Bernard Feldsteln of St. Johnsville was called and pronounced him dead. He contacted Dr. Raymond Wytrwal, coroner, who was out of town, and the coroner authorized the removal of
the body and said he would conduct an investigatron of the apparent suicide later.
Mr Smullens, according to relatives had been despondent recently because of his health. He became ill with pneumonia January 1 and spent four weeks in the Amsterdam City Hospital. Some weeks after returning home, he suffered a relapse and was a patient in the hospital for three months. When he returned from the hospital the second time, the family moved to St. Johnsville to live with his brother. He planned to take an active part in, his brother's business in the village.
He was last een about 9:30 o'clock yesterday morning, when members of the family left to do some shopping in Little Falls. John Smullens returned home at noon, and when he didn't see his brother about the house, went to the shop.
Smullins had used a piece of rope about five feet long, which had been left over when he made a swing for the children a few days ago. He had evidently stood on a chair and fastened the rope to a rafter and then fell forward.
Thinking he might still be alive, John Smullens cut the rope and summoned Dr. Feldstein, who estimated he had been dead about an hour. An investigation and record was made by Patrolman Robert Percy. Smullens was born January 13, 1901, in Gloversville.
Mr. Smullens received his education in the Johnstown public schools. He served as a member of the Johnstown Police Department four years, and afterwards was employed as a leather worker. For some years he was active in the leather workers union. A few years ago he moved to Gloversville and opened a grill on Church Street. Shortly after he became ill he disposed of his Interest and went to St. Johnsville.
He was a member of St. Patrick's Church in Johnstown and had attended St. Patrick's Church in St. Johnsville. For many years he had been a member of the Fort Johnson Aerie, Fraternal Order of Eagles, and the Johnstown Moose.
