 - Death Announcement (The Leader - Republican, Gloversville and Johnstown, NY, Wednesday, November 24, 1937)
Harry Lewis Nixon, aged 47, former Johnstown boy who went to New York while still in his teens and rose to a position of prominence in the financial world passed away yesterday at his home in Forest Hills, Long Island.
He was a son of Mrs. Catherine Nixon, 531 North Market street, this city, and word of his death was received yesterday afternoon.
The mother and her two sons, Orville of this city and Ward, of Pine Lake, left early this morning to attend the funeral held this afternoon at 3 in the Zion P. E.church at Douglaston, L I. and with the family out of the city, details of his death could not be learned.
In addition to his mother and two brothers, the survivors are his widow, Margaret, and three daughters, Helen, Jane and Kay Ann, residing on Long Island.
Nixon's life story reads like an Horatio Alger tale. Leaving home About 1907 at the age of 17, he went in the Metropolis and shortly after accepted a reportorial position with the New York Herald. He subsequently became financial editor of his paper which position he held for a number of years.
His newspaper work gave him an opportunity to keep his finger on the pulse of the financial world and with this training as a groundwork, it was only natural that he later became associated with the brokerage business.
His first position was with Pynchon & Co. as customer's man, which he accepted about 1921. He severed his connection with this concern to become a firm member of Jackson, Boesel & Co. following the dissolution of Noyes & Jackson, one of the best known Stock Exchange firms in the financial
district.
Subsequently he was a member of Gilchrist, Bliss & Co. and for the past two years had been vice-president of Childs Jeffries & Thorndike, a concern which specialized in financing chain stores throughout the contry.
About 1924 he was also made a director and vice-president of the Union and United Tobacco Co., which was incorporated with a capitalization of $250,000,000.
Despite his youth. Nixon was recognized as a smart trader on the Stock Exchange, possessing to an unusual degree the ability to anticipate the rise and fall of the market. He was financial advisor for a number of the country's outstanding men including Jesse Livermore, W. C. Durant, the automobile manufacturer, and George J. Whelan, well known tobacco man.
Wise and careful trading also brought him a personal fortune, estimated at more than $1,000,000 in 1929, the greater part of which was saved when he sold out all his holdings shortly before the market crash.
Retiring from active business, Nixon and his family went to France and remained in Paris about a year and a half. Returning to this country, he foresaw the devaluation of the dollar and a premium on gold, friends; said today, and went with his family to California, where he became interested in gold and silver mining properties.
These investments turned out to be just the reverse of his earlier success and like many other market operators, his fortune was badly depleted during the depression years that followed the crash.
Returning to the East, he became associated with Childs, Jeffries & Thorndike two or three years ago and was making a comeback, according to information learned from his friends, when overtaken by death.
