- Newspaper Article (Richfield Springs Mercury, Thursday, April 7, 1932)
Mrs. Delia Getman, wife of Dorr Getman of the town of Springfield, committed suicide near the noon hour Sunday by shooting herself through the heart with a double-barrelled shotgun. The body was found in an icehouse on the place by an aunt, Mrs. Ella McManus, and Fred Armstrong who worked on the farm.
Coroner Harrie V. Frink of Richfield Springs was called to the scene by Sergeant Cunningham of the State Police. Coroner Frink pronounced death as due to suicide. It was reported that Mrs. Getman, who had been in poor health a long time, had stated that she would take her own life.
The husband was In Cooperstown on business, Mrs. Getman having declined his Invitation to accompany him. Appearances indicate that Mrs. Getman had deliberately planned taking her life. The shotgun used had been hidden from her husband for some time. There were no shells in it when put away. She had found the box of shells, removed two, shot one in the gun to see if the shells were good and used the other on herself.
Her spectacles and a bonnet, which she had evidently put on when she left the house, had been taken off and carefully placed on a beam in the icehouse near where her lifeless body had fallen. Stuck into the wall beside them was also a sharp paring knife, which the athorities believed she had intended for use in case the shots did not prove fatal.
.Mrs. Getman was Delia Stanton, a daughter of the late Levi and Mary Anne (VanCourt) Stanton, and was born in the town of Springfield March 18, 1878. Her death occurred on the fifth anniversary of the death of her father. Her marriage to Mr Gatman occurred about 35 years ago. They had lived on the farm where she died for about 17 years, moving there from Christian Hill, in Hartwick township.
Surviving besides the husband are two daughters, Mrs. Herbert Tyler of Cooperstown, R. D., and Mrs. Paul McManus of Deloris, Colo. There also remain one sister, Mrs. William Hoffman of East Springfield, and two brothers. Charles Stanton of East Springfield and Newton Stanton of Pierstown: as well as four grandchildren.
