Reuben Empie, a farmer living at Stone Arabia, was working in his fields during the recent hot wave when he suddenly complained to the men working with him that the heat was affecting his head and that he was going to quit for the day. A few hours later he was found lying beside a fence some distance from his home, his mind having been overbalanced by the heat. Reuben J Empie, 62, former resident of the Town of Ephratah and Fort Plain, died suddenly from a heart attack yesterday afternoon in Utica where he had been employed for about 20 years.
He was bom Feb, 6, 1887 in the Town of Palatine, a son of Clark and Elizabeth Gray Empie.
The survivors are his wife, Mrs Edns Shults Empie Fort Plain; two daughters. Miss Mae Empie, Fort Plain, aad Miss Mildred Empie, Albany; two sons, Manfred and Alton Empie of Fort Plain: one grandchild; one brother Alton Empie Sharon Springs, one stater, Mrs. Mae Abel, Ephratah and several nieces and nephews.
Funeral services will be held Saturday afternoon at 2 at the Swartz funeral home. The Rev. Chester Chilton of the Reformed church Will officiate. Burial will be in the Ephratah Rural Cemetery.

FORT PLAIN - Mrs. Edna Shults Empie, 73, widow of Reuben Empie, died Monday afternoon in St, Mary's Hospital, Amsterdam, where she had been a patient several weeks.
BORN IN THE Town of Palatine Feb. 23, 1883, the daughter of Martin and Mary Snell Shults, she resided in Fort Plain many years. She was a member of the Reformed church here.
Survivors are two daughters, Misses Mary and Mildred Empie, and two sons, Manfred and Alton Empie, and one granddaughter, all of this village.
THE FUNERAL SERVICE will be held today at 2 p.m., at the Gray Funeral home with Rev. John Pelon, pastor of the Reformed Church, officiating. Burial will be in the Fort Plain cemetery.

FORT PLAIN - Alton Empie, 82, of Sharon Springs RD 1, died Saturday at his home after a brief illness.
Born at Palatine he had lived at Sharon Springs 33 years. He was a self employed farmer for many years retiring several years ago, He was a member of the Ephratah Reformed Church. Mr. Empie was an Army veteran of World War I and had served overseas. He was a member of the Sharon Springs American Legion Post.
Survivors include his widow, Mrs. Mary Heron Empie; three sons, Richard and Leo Empie both of Sharon Springs and John Empie of Gales Ferry Conn.
Six daughters, Mrs. Leon Carpenter of Fonda, Mrs. Lucille Mackey of Winnipeg Canada, Mrs. John Gajowski of Palatine Bridge, Mrs. Roy Lettis of Fort Plain RD; Mrs. Joan Searles of Canajoharie and Patricia Empie of Sharon Springs RD 1. A sister, Mrs. Mae Abel of Johnstown.
Eighteen grandchildren, 19 great-grandchildren, several nieces and nephews also survive.

After a wedding breakfast at the home of the bride's mother, Mr. and Mrs. Empie left on their wedding trip to Syracuse.
The bride Is a popular young woman of Johnstown and has the best wishes of a large acquaintance for a happy and prosperous wedded life. For the past year she has been the teacher of a district school near Ephratah, Upon their return, Mr. and Mrs Empie will reside on a farm which the former recently purchased near Fort Plain.

A 22-\ear-old Leesville man was drowned yesterday afternoon while swimming in a farm pond near Carlise on Route 20. He was Edward Peter Empie.
According to the story of a companion. William Dougherty, 20, Carlise. Empie jumped off a diving board and came up struggling. He was not a good enough swimmer to' save Empie, Dougherty said.
Another companion. Alene Hotaling, 16, of Sloansville, drove a mile to the home of Francis Lussier, on whose farm the pond is located, to summon assistance. In the meantime, the body was recovered by two passersby, but revival efforts by the Central Bridge fire department were futile.
Among the survivors are sisters, Mrs. Leon Carpenter, Fonda. Mrs. Roy Lettis, Canajoharie, and Mrs. Donald Searles, also of Canajoharie. Two brothers, Robert and Richard Empie, live at Sharon Springs.

FORT PLAIN — Earl Abel, 67, of Nelliston, died Wednesday night m the Johnstown Hospital where he had been a patient for three weeks.
HE WAS BORN Nov. 9, 1894 in Ephratah and was a resident of Nelliston since 1948. A former employe of Arkell and Smith, he retired in 1959.
Mr. Abel was a member of the Ephratah Reformed Church and the Fort Plain Masonic Lodge 423 F&AM.
Survivors Include his wife, Marian Keller Waufle Abel; two sons Sherwood Abel, Sammonsvllle, and Clark Abel, Ephratah; two daughters, Mrs. Raymond Aungler, Tully, NY, and Mrs. Radford Failing, Caroga Lake; five step-children, Mrs. Richard Carter and Ivan Waufle. St. Johnsville, Mrs. Kenneth Jones, Fort Hunter, Albert Waufle Jr.,
Fort Plain, and Richard Waufle, Nelliston, and 15 grandchildren.

Sgt. Kermit Abel, 29, of the U.S. Army, a native of Ephratah and former Fort Plain Central School student, was found dead Sunday in the apartment he recently rented in suburban Rueil-Malmaison, near Paris, an Army spokesman today told the Associated Press.
Physicians said Abel apparently had been asphyxiated by smoke from a fire that broke out in the apartment.
His wife. Mrs. Mary Abel, of Fayetteville, N.C., had expected to join him here soon. Abel rented the apartment in anticipation of her arrival with their son Larry, 7.
Abel's father and step-mother, Mr. and Mrs. Earl Abel, live on Railroad St., Nelliston.
Sgt. Abel was born May 8, 1930 in Ephrathah, the son of May and Earl Abel.
He attended school at Fort Plain Central School. He joined the armed forces in 1948, spending one year in the U.S. Navy and the remainder of his enlistment in the Army.
Survivors besides his wife, his son and his parents are two brothers. Sherwood, of Sammonsville, and Clark, Ephratah two sisters, Mrs. Helen Failing. Caroga Lake, and Mrs. Eilene Angiers, Tully.
Funeral arrangements are incomplete.

Sgt. and Mrs. Kermit E. Abel, newlyweds, were guests of honor yesterday at a party held at the home of Mr. and Mrs Sherwood E. Abel in Sammonsville. The two Abels are brothers, and are the sons of Earl Abel of Neliston and Mrs. Mae Abel of Ephratah. The recent bridegroom married Mary Frances Prince of Tabor; City, N.C., in Union", S.C., on October 15.
H eis with the Army's Eighth Division stationed at Fort Jackson, near Columbia, S.C. The bride is a student at Columbia Commercial College. They will reside in or near Columbia as long as Sgt. Abel is stationed at Fort Jackson.
There were about 35 guests at the party. Refreshments were served and games played. During the evening a purse of money and other gifts were presented to the couple.
Sgt. and Mrs. Abel are on their slightly belated honeymoon. It is the bride's first visit to the North.
On November 28 Sgt. Abel is due to return to duty at the camp, where he has been stationed for about a year. He was engaged in training recruits and has been advanced to company supply sergeant.

ST. JOHNSVILLE - Mrs. Lela W. Anders, died on Thursday in her home on Shaw Street, Utica. She was born in St. Johnsville, the daughter of Chauncey and Kate Empie Wilson, lived in St. Johnsville during the earlier years of her life and attended the local schools.
She was married in 1914 to Charles W. Anders of Utica where they had since made their home. He died in 1957.
She was a member of the First Church of Christ Scientist in Utica.
She is survived by two daughters, Mrs. Lawrence Barrett, Utica and Miss Catherine W. Anders of Utica, with whom she made her home.
Services were conducted at 10:30 Saturday morning from the Surridge and Roberts Funeral Home, Utica. Burial will be in the St. Johnsville cemetery in the spring.

Charles W. Anders, 71, of 817 Shaw St., died at his home Jan. 16, 1957, after a brief illness.
Mr. Anders had been in failing health for several years, but was not taken seriously ill until several days ago.
He was born Nov. 2, 1885, in Ball Hill, as son of Carl and Mina Gumtum (?) Anders, He attended local scools and learned the steam fitting trade, which he followed most of his adult life in Utica. He married Lelah K. Wilson here on April 3, 1914. He was employed by most of the plumbing and steamfitting contractors in Utica and worked on many of the well know schools and buildings. H retired in 1954.
He was a member of the Plumbers and Steam Fitters Local 79; Shenandoah Lodge 95, IOOF and attended the First Church of Christ Scientist.
Surviving besides his wife and two daughters, Mrs. Lawrence Barrett of Utica, Miss Cathryn W. Anders, at home; a brother-in-law, Bion C. Wilson of St. Johnsville.
The funeral will be held at 10 Saturday from the Keilbach & Rockwell Funeral Home. Burial will be in St. Johnsville Cemetery. Friends mmay call at the funeral home from 7 to 9 today and from 2 to 4 and 7 to 9 tomorrow.

NEW HARTFORD - Lawrence J. Barrett. 73, of Oxford Towne Apartments, passed away Wednesday evening, October 15, 1986, in St. Elizabeth Hospital after a short illness.
He was born in Utica. June 18, 1913, son of the late James and Mary Kellmurray Barrett. He was raised and educated in Utica and on February 14, 1946, married Helen Anders in Cobleskill. N.Y. For over 23 years, Lawrence was a printer in the Utica area, retiring in 1976. He was a member of Our Lady of Lourdes Church, Utica. He was also a member of the B.P.O.E. Elks #33 and the C.S.E.A. Mr. Barrett was a WW II Army Veteran.
Besides his wife, Helen, he is survived by one uncle. Raymond Kellmurray, of Plattsburg. N.Y.; also surviving are several nieces and nephews.
The funeral will be held Saturday morning, October 18, 1986, at 10:30 at The Heintz Funeral Home, 1517 Whitesboro St., and at 11 o'clock at Our Lady of Lourdes Church, where a Mass of Christian Burial will be celebrated. Interment will be in Crown Hill Memorial Park. Friends may call at the funeral home Friday, 2-4 and 7-9.

Leslie D. Wykle, retired garlock foreman, dies.
Leslie D. Wykle, 65 years old, of 21 Elmer Street, retired foreman at the Garlock Packing Co., in Palmyra, and one time grocer in Lyons, died Tuesday in the Barber Hospital. He was in failing health but his hospitalization followed a fractured skull sustained in a fall in his home. Mr. Wykle was born in Lyons March 8, 1892, son of John F. and Sarah Jordan Wykle. He was a lifelong resident of the village. He is survived by his wife, Hazel Niles Wykle; two sons, David of Syracuse and Robert of Lyons; and three grandchildren. Funeral services will be held at the Boeheim Funeral Home, 77 William St. at 2:30 P.M. Thursday, with the Rev. Walter Hobkirk, pastor of the Park Presbyterian Church, Newark, officiating. James V. Berry, aged 61, was found dead yesterday afternoon about 2 in living quarters in the rear of a barber shop conducted by him on the second floor of 10 South Perry street.
Dr. Frank G. Calder, coroner, viewed the body and gave a verdict of death due to coronary occlusion.
Since the death of his sister, Mrs. Kitty Snell, about ten days ago, he and wife had been living at the Snell home, 220 East Main street.
He left the house to fix a fire in his former living quarters and, when he failed to return, his wife became alarmed. After making the discovery, she notified the police department.
He was born November 22, 1879, in Ephratah, the son of Henry V. and Eleanor Nellis Berry. He spent most of his life in Fulton County and resided in Johnstown about twelve years.
The only survivor, besides his wife, is one sister, Mrs. Norman Getman.
The body will be taken this evening to the sister's home, 317 West Main street, where the funeral will be held tomorrow afternoon at 2, The Rev. Wilmer M. Zuehlke will officiate and interment will be made in Ephratah rural cemetery.

BLOSSVALE — Sherman A. Stone, 81 years old on Dec. 29, died at his farm home, the Stone homestead, Monday night after a four months illness.
He was born in the homestead Dec. 29, 1870, where his Grandfather and father had been born and where they also died.
He was the son of Judson and Celestia Kilts Stone; and followed his father in the operation of the farm.
On March 30, 1881, he married Elizabeth Saltsman, who survives with two sons, Howard Stone of Rensselaer, and Robert Stone at home; two daughters, Mrs. Thomas L. Dixon of North Bay, and Miss Lucy Stone at home; a brother, Mark F. Stone of Sylvan Beach; eight grandchildren and three great-grandchildren.
Funeral services, in charge of J, Homer Ball of' Canastota, will be held from the Stone Homestead Thursday afternoon at 2, the Rev. James J. Morley, pastor of First Presbyterian Church, Oneida, officiating. Burial will be in the McConnellsville Cemetery.
Friends may call at the Stone home this afternoon and evening.

Blossvale - Mrs. Elizabeth Saltsman Stone, 96, great-granddauther of Col. Jacob J. Klock, who was killed in the Battle of Oriskany, died Tuesday in her home.
Mrs. Stone was born in the Town of Vienna and educated in its schools. After attending teachers training class, she taught in this are and Montgomery County. In 1891 she was married to Sherman A. Stone. Mr. Stone died in 1951.
Mrs. Stone was a member of Vienna Methodist Church and its Ladies Aid Society.
She leaves two sons, Howard J. of Rensselaer and Rowell of Blossvale, and two daughters, Mrs. Thomas L. Dixon of North Bay and Miss Lucy J. Stone of Blossvale.
The funeral will be held Saturday from the M. Daniel Funeral Home, Camden. Burial will be in McConnellsville.

Vienna, March 28. — Mr. and Mrs. Sherman Stone, who live on the Vienna Road a mile east of this village, will quietly mark their golden wedding anniversary at their home on Sunday.
Sherman Stone, a son of the late Judson Stone and Celesta Kilts Stone of Vienna, is the older of two sons, the other one being Mark Stone. Mrs. Stone was a daughter of the late Nathan and Elizabeth Klock Saltsman, Montgomery County. Mrs. Stone has a sister and a brother living, Mrs. Julia Lerois [sic] of Adrian, Mich., and Eugene Saltsman of Oneida.
The couple have four children, Mrs. Helen J. Dixon, North Bay; Miss Lucy Stone, a teacher at Saranac Lake; Howard Stone of Rensselaer; and Rowell Stone at home. They have also eight grandchildren, one of whom, Thomas A. Dixon, has been called to service in the draft.

Higginsville, May 17 — Herman V. Kilts, 66, died suddenly at his home here Sunday evening after an illness of a few hours.
He was born July 10, 1876 in the same house where he died, a son of the late Peter G. and Rhoda Suits Kilts. On Sept. 6, 1899 at McConnellsville, he was married to Ella Shaver, the eremony being performed by the Rev. Adelbert Warren. He was a member of Vienna Lodge 440, F. & A. M., and of Vesta Chapter 115, O. E. S. He had been a Mason for 43 years.
Surviving are his widow; three daughters, Mrs. Robert H. Fearon, Oneida; Mrs. Homer Cox, Durhamville; and Miss Rhoda Kilts, at home; a sister, Mrs. Helen Clifford. Vienna; seven grandchildren; a niece and six nephews.
Funeral services will be held at his late home on Wednesday at 2 p. m. with the Rev. Russell Brown, Utica, officiating. Interment will be made at McConnellsville in charge of B. A. Sanborn & Son, Camden. Friends may call at his late home at their convenience.

ONEIDA - Mrs. Ella A. Kilts. 83, of 536 Broadway, died Sunday evening in Oneida City Hospital after an illness of more than one year.
Mrs. Kilts was born in Vienna, Feb. 3, 1883, the daughter of Jerome and Ella MacWilliams Shaver, and had been a resident of Oneid for the past 23 years. Her husband, Herman V. Kilts, died May 16. 1943.
Mrs. Kilts was a member of the Vienna Methodist Church, a 50-year member and Past Matron of Vesta Chapter. OES. at New London, and was a member of the Past Matrons' Club of Vesta Chapter. She was also a member of Dorcas Circle at State Bridge.
She leaves three daughters. Miss Rhoda Kilts, at home; Mrs. Robert (Ruby) Fearon, Oneida; Mrs. Homer (Dorothy) Cox, Durhamville, a sister, Mrs. Lloyd Castle. Rome; seven grandchildren and 17 great-grandchildren.

DELHI — Peter C. Clifford joined his wife, Eva, on July 3, 2010, after a brief illness. He was born Nov. 6, 1923, in Vienna, the youngest son of Clifton C. Clifford and Helen Kilts. He was a member of the Camden High School graduation Class of 1941. He attended Clarkson University until honorably serving in the United States Navy during World War II in the Philippines. After discharge, Peter completed his college education, a member of the Clarkson Class of 1949. On Aug. 20, 1955, he married his love, Eva Nowey. Eva passed away in 2006.
Peter taught engineering at both Clarkson and SUNY Delhi. After completing his master’s at the University of Michigan he became Vice President for Administration at Delhi, retiring from that position in 1985.
Peter served on several boards including O’Connor Hospital in Delhi, but his favorite activity was golf, a hobby he enjoyed both in New York and Florida.
Peter is survived by his sister-in-law, Alice Kany, Ithaca; many nieces and nephews, Clifton (Anne) Austerman and Kenneth (Hilda) Austerman, both of Penn Yan, Helen Peebles of Oneida, Donna (James) Merriam of Boonville, Esther McConnell, Peter Clifford and Patricia Clifford, all from Vienna, Michael Kany of Baldwinsville, Jim Rusyniak of Elbridge, Tim (Darlene) Nowey of Jordan, Nancy Rusyniak of Syracuse and MaryAnn Caltagerone of Syracuse. He is also survived by 19 great-nieces and great-nephews; 18 great-great-nieces and great-great-nephews; and 2 great-great-great-nieces and great-great-great-nephews.
In addition to his wife, Peter was predeceased by his brother, Clifton Clifford, his brother and sister-in-law, Getman and Mary Jane Clifford; his sister and brother-in-law, Mary and Kenneth Austerman; his niece, Anne Dunn; and nephew, Albert "Don" Peebles.
The family would like to thank Dr. Jones and the staff of 2 North at A.O. Fox Memorial Hospital in Oneonta for their kindness and caring during Peter’s illness.
A Mass of Christian burial will be celebrated at 10 a.m. Wednesday, July 7, 2010, in St. Peter’s Catholic Church, Delhi, with the Rev. Dennis Murphy as celebrant. Burial will follow the service in Woodland Cemetery, Delhi.
In lieu of flowers, contributions in his memory may be made to St. Peter’s Church, Delhi or SUNY Delhi Alumni Fund.

McCONNEI.LSVILLE. JUNE 9. On Sunday afternoon at the parsonage,occurred the marriage of Miss Katie Peacock of Vienna and Olin Mott of Plains. Rev; R. F. Whipple officiated.

Mr. and Mrs. Olin L. Mott of Fish Creek, formerly of Oneida, celebrated their golden wedding anniversary June 5. Catherine Peacock of Vienna and Olin Mott were married at McConneliaville June 5, 1898, by Rev. Mr. Whipple, Methodist minister. He is a former employe of the Company of Master Craftsmen. A family party marked the day. They have six children living, Leonard and Kenneth, twins and Charles of Oneida; Wesley of Oneida Castle; Mrs. Huldah Morford of Verona R, D.. Mr. and Mrs. Olin Mott, Fish Creek, were feted at a dinner party in honor of their 60th wedding anniversary Thursday evening, at Scholl's Restaurant, Verona Beach.
Mrs. Mott Is the former Catherine Peacock of McConnellsville. The couple was married June 5, 1898 at McConnellsville by the Rev. Whipple, then pastor of the McConnellsville Methodist Church. Attendant were James Peacock, brother of the bride, and Miss Bessie Teelin of McConnellsville.
Mr. and Mrs. Mott had eight children, six of whom are still living: Mrs, Hulda Morford, Kirkville; Mrs. Ann Weimer, Verona Beach; Charles Mott, Oneida; Wesley Mott, Oneida Castle; Kenneth Mott. Verona Beach, and Leonard Mott, Fish Creek. They also have nine grandchildren and 19 great-grandchildren.
Mr. Mott retired in 1948 from the Company of Master Craftsmen, Oneida, where he had been employed as a cabinetmaker.

Oneida, July 8. — William Mott, 21, member of Company K. 10th Infantry, National Guard, who was seriously injured in an automobile accident Saturday afternoon at East Greenbush, on the Albany-New York highway, died this morning at Albany Hospital from a fractured skull and a punctured lung.
He was one of three Oneida soldiers who were on their way home from Camp Smith, Peekskill, where they had been for a week. The other two guardsmen in the party were Andrew Janowsky of this city, formerly of Rome, and Ernest Holmes of Vernon. It was not thought at first that Mott was seriously injured.
Holmes and Janowsky are still confined to the Albany Hospital, the former in a serious condition.
William Mott is a son of Mr. and Mrs. Olin S. Mott, 412 Leonard street. He had been employed for some time past as a shipping clerk in the Brown Skirt Factory.
Surviving besides the parents are several brothers and sisters.

Camden, Feb. 19 — Funeral services for Miss Julia Ann Mott, whose death occurred Feb. 14 at the home of her brother, John H. Mott, Oswego St., were conducted Monday afternoon at the B. A. Sanborn and Son funeral home. The Rev. Thomas J. Williams, pastor of the Methodist Church, officiating, assisted by the Rev. Dr. A. C. Loucks.
Those acting as bearers were Leonard Mott, Kenneth Mott, Wesley Mott, Herbert Morford, Clarence Jencks and Augustus Mott. The service was largely attended by relatives and friends.
The remains were placed in the vault at Forest Park Cemetery to await burial next spring in Rathbunville.
