- Obituary (Syracuse Herald-Journal, NY, Friday, December 2, 1988)
Louise Eggleston Getman, a longtime teacher in Baldwinsville who began her career at the Shacksboro School, a one-room schoolhouse for first through eighth grades in the town of Van Buren, died Thursday evening at St. Luke's Hospital in New Hartford. She was 79 and had lived in Newport nine years.
Mrs. Getman was a native of Baldwinsville and spent most of her life there, graduating from Baldwinsville Academy. She began her teaching career in 1928. At that time it was not unusual for young people who planned a teaching career to teach for a time, go to school for a time, and alternate until earning a teaching certificate. Mrs. Getman took this route and graduated from Oswego Normal School, a three-year program, in 1937. While at Shacksboro, she taught all subjects and after walking through the snow in the winter, arriving early, she would light the fire to warm the building for the students. "I considered myself lucky when there wouldn't be a student in one of the grades that year", her daughter, Martha, recalled her mother saying. Shacksboro School has since been moved to McHarrie Park in Baldwinsville where it is now a historical museum. In 1937 Mrs. Getman transferred to the Root School in the town of Lysander, another one-room schoolhouse, where she remained until 1942. Mrs. Getman then stayed at home to raise her family, returning to the Baldwinsville school system in 1954. She taught second grade at Elizabeth Street School, the former Baldwinsville Academy where she had spent her own school years and played on the basketball team. Later she taught at Elden Elementary School, retiring in June, 1967.
Mrs. Getman was highly respected in the community. She was an outgoing, enthusiastic, cheerful person who loved sports. She raised a wonderful family, recalled Emily DeLyne, a fellow teacher. The Getman and DeLyne families lived next door to each other on Artillery Lane for years and the couples would play bridge together frequently. Mrs. Getman was an excellent swimmer. Summers during the children's growing up years were spent at Palmerston Lake in Ontario, Canada, where she also enjoyed boating and fishing.
She was the widow of Wesley A. Getman, a physics and mathematics teacher and coach in Baldwinsville, who died in 1965. She married Marvin L. Morenus of Gloversville in July, 1967. After his death in November, 1969, she returned to the Getman name.
Surviving are two daughters, Martha L. Dykema of Old Lyme, Conn. and Nancy G. Clarke of Newport; a son, James W. Getman of Baldwinsville; a sister, Dorothy Nelson of Baldwinsville; a cousin, Althea F. Chapman of Wilton, Conn.; nine grandchildren; and several nieces and nephews.
Services will be at 4 p.m. Saturday at Falardeau Funeral Home, 93 Downer St., Baldwinsville, the Rev. Roger Pohl officiating. Burial will be in Riverview Cemetery, Baldwinsville. There will be calling hours 2 to 4 p.m. Saturday, prior to the service, at the funeral home. Contributions may be made to the Wesley A. Getman Memorial Fund, c/o Falardeau Funeral Home.

Our readers will readily recall the story of Mrs. Mattte A. Empie, the Gloversville school teacher, who cauaed a sensation to Pleasant Valley a few weeks ago. It was stated at the time that the woman's husband was a dissipated fellow, who refused to support his wife and she was compelled to leave him and earn her own living. We have been informed that these are not the facts in the case and that Mr. Empie was a young man of exemplary, character and good habits.
The couple were married by Rev. O. H. Merrill, pastor of the Baptist church of this village, on the 16th of June, 1889. Empie was 19 years of age, and his wife, whose maiden name was Mattie A. Jenks, was 21. Soon after the marriage the husband hired a house in Deckerville and furnished it, but when the time came to go housekeeping the wife did not want to leave home. This naturally created some ill feeling, but matters were finally adjusted and they continued to reside with Mrs. Empie's mother in Gloversville, until the middle of the November following their marriage, when matters so adjusted themselves that Empie came to this place and boarded for a while with his sister, Mrs. Homer Mead, and afterward with Mrs. Reid, on Washington avenue. People who knew him during his residence here speak of him as a sober, industrious young man, quiet and gentlemanly. In May, 1891, he removed to Syracuse, where he resides at present —Republiean.
