ST. Johnsville - George A. Herning, 55, died Sunday in Bassett Hospital in Cooperstown. Mr. Herning had been an executive of the Little Falls Felt Shoe Co. here for a number of years.
He was born in the town of Danube Sept. 5, 1895, son of Charles and Eliza Loucks Herning. He was graduated from Little Falls high school, and came to St. Johnsville in 1919, folloeing his return from overseas service in World war I.
He was a member of Moris J. Edwards post, American Legion; St. Johnsville Rotary club: Little Falls lodge, F&AM; Astorogan chapter, Royal Arch Masons, and Little Falls Commandery, Knights Templar. He also was a member of St. John's Reformed Church here and had been a member of the consistery for a number of years. He was a director of the First National Bank of Canajoharie.
Mr. Herning had been connected with the Little Falls Felt Shoe Company for 35 years. The company was just opening its St. Johnsville branch when he returned from his war service, and he was made office manager for the local plant, coming at that time to make his residence here.
Later he became superintendant of the local factory, and more recently was made general purchasing agent for both the locl and Little Falls plants.
He leaves his wife, Mrs. Rose Herning; one son, Charles Herning, a student at Rutgers University, New Brunswick, NJ; one brother, Roland Snyder, Maplewood, NJ; an aunt and several cousins/
The funeral will be held at St. John's Reformed Church at 2 o'clock Wednesday afternoon. Rev. Ernest Crouse, pastor, will officiate, assisted by Rev. Norman Thomas, former pastor, now of Schenectady. Burial will be in Inghams Mills cemetery.

Mrs. George A Herning of St. Johnsville died suddenly yesterday forenoon at the Little Falls hospital after undergoing an operation for the removal of tonsils. Mrs. Herning had been at the hospital about a week and since going there had given birt to a son who did not live.
Deceased was born i nLittle Falls 34 years ago. Her maiden name way Myrtle Coville.
She was a member of the Eastern Star, the Community club and the Little Falls Baptist church, as well as of the Alpha Kappa Psi car club of Little Falls.
Mr. Herning is a village trustee of St. Johnsville and holds a responsible positionwith the St. Johnsville branch of the Little Falls Felt Shoe Co. Besides the husband and the little son Charles, there survive he rmother, Mrs. Alfred Coville, and a brother Ivan, both of Little Falls.
The body was brought to the home in St. Johnsville, where the funeral will be heldSaturday afternoon, Rev. C. B. Allnatt of the Little Falls Baptist church will officiate.

Ralph W. Skakel. aged 54 years, of S Oak street, well known resident and member of the former Johnstown Volunteer Fire Department, died this morning about 1:30 in the Nathan Littauer hospital.
He had been in ill health about four years but his condition was not considered serious until four days ago when he suffered a heart attack and was removed to the hospital.
Mr. Skakel was born in the Town of Stratford, November 24, 1877, son of James Skakel and Susan (Youker) Skakel.
He was a member of the Lutheran denomination. At the time the Volunteer Fire Department was disbanded by order of the Common Council a number years ago he waa a member of the Tryon Hook & Ladder Co. He was alao affiliated with Cayadutta lodge, 218, IOOF.
The survivors are his wife, Gertrude (Loucks) Skakel; two sons, Ralph W. Jr.. and Floyd Skakel, Johnstown; two daughters, Mrs. Hattie Stewart and Mrs. Ruth Fredericks, Gloversville: and one brother, James Skakel, Johnstown.
The body was removed to the Wassung & Brown funeral home to be prepared for burial. Tomorrow morning it will be taken to the family home where the funeral will be held Wednesday afternoon at 4.
The Rav. Andrew L. Dillenbeck, D. D., of St. Mark's Lutheran church will officiate. Burial will be made in Fern Dale cemetery.

Ray C. Gifford, aged 69, of Ilion, died December 5, in his home following a long illness.
Mr. Gifford was born in the Town of Columbia and had lived in Ilion for the past ten years. He was a former resident of Jordanville. He married Lena Werner in Springfield Center in 1918. He owned and operated a dairy farm for a number of years and had been employed by the Hale Manufacturing Company in Herkimer for a brief time. He was last employed as a caretaker at the Oak Hill Cemetery, Herkimer.
He was a member of the First Baptist Church of Ilion.
Surviving are his wife; a daughter, Mrs. Robert Elwood of Mohawk; two sons, Derward of West Winfield and Gordon of South Columbia, and a brother, Lynn of
Jordanville.
Funeral services were held on Wednesday. December 7 from the Ehiter-Hendrik Funeral Home in Ilion, with the Rev. Arthur Lacey, Baptist pastor, officiating. Burial was in Highland Cemetery, Jordanville.
