 - Obituary (The Atlanta Journal-Constitution, GA October 1, 1997)
Mercer Harris Sr., baseball scout, gardener, Lawrenceville civic booster
A former professional baseball scout and minor league player, Mercer Harris Sr., 88, died Monday of a brain tumor at Medical Arts Health
Facility in Lawrenceville.
The funeral will be at 2 p.m. today at Central Baptist Church in Lawrenceville. Tim Stewart Funeral Home in Lawrenceville is in charge of arrangements.
In a baseball career that spanned 62 years, Mr. Harris was a retired baseball scout with the Montreal Expos, the St. Louis Cardinals and the Detroit Tigers, said his son Thomas Harris of Lawrenceville.
During Mr. Harris' scouting career, which began in 1948, he signed pitcher Tom Chaney of the Cardinals and Senators, infielder Bobby Dews of the Braves, pitcher Gordon Richardson of the Cardinals and Giants, pitcher Phillip Clark of the Cardinals and the Atlanta Braves director of scouting and player development Paul Snyder. Of the 150 to 200 players signed by Mr. Harris, 23 of them eventually made it to the big leagues. Mr. Harris retired in 1992.
While scouting for St. Louis, one of the prospects that he met in Birmingham was the "Say Hey Kid,'' Willie Mays. Only a high school youngster of about 15, the future Hall-of-Famer knocked about 10 of Mr. Harris' pitches over the outfield wall in short order.
In an interview with The Atlanta Journal-Constitution in 1994, Mr. Harris recalled what his advance man, Pop Shaw, had told him about the
young prospect. "He said, 'If you're coming to see Willie Mays, be sure and bring a bunch of balls with you. He's gonna lose some for you,' " Mr. Harris said.
Despite Mr. Harris' glowing scouting report, St. Louis was not ready to sign black players, despite Jackie Robinson breaking the color barrier the year before.
Mr. Harris loved his work as a scout, but always regretted St. Louis' decision about Willie Mays, losing him to the Giants.
"I am proud of every kid I ever signed and stay in touch with a lot of them. I'm proud of some I didn't sign, too," Mr. Harris said in 1994.
"Especially that Mays kid," Mr. Harris said with a laugh. "If we could call back the times, I'd sign him today in a blink of an eye."
A native of Lawrenceville, Mr. Harris played for Tubby Walton's mill team and after graduating from Lawrenceville High School, he attended the University of Georgia and Oglethorpe University in the off-season. He later signed with the old St. Louis Browns and made it as high as AAA-Rochester, playing shortstop.
When he wasn't occupied with baseball, Mr. Harris joined his son Thomas in his Duluth real estate business, Cripple Creek Co. Mr. Harris was married to Jeanette Pittard Harris, a sister of the late longtime Gwinnett Superior Court Judge Charles Pittard.
Much of the Harris family property near the old Gwinnett County Courthouse in downtown Lawrenceville is now occupied by residential
developments, baseball fields, a lake and Central Baptist Church, where Mr. Harris was a founding member, said Gainer Bryan of Lawrenceville, a former editor at The Gwinnett Daily News.
Mr. Bryan would find a sack full of turnips left on his doorstep, compliments of Mr. Harris, an avid gardener. A Lawrenceville civic booster
and a longtime Pike Street resident, Mr. Harris was a "generous man," said Mr. Bryan.
Surviving in addition to his son and wife are another son, Mercer Harris Jr. of North Carolina; two daughters, Janet Harris of Milledgeville
and Joan Harris of Norcross; four grandchildren; and a great-grandchild.
