Marriage Notes for Harry Williams Brown and Louise J Pulver
- Newspaper Article (The Rome Daily Sentinel, NY, Wednesday, October 30, 1918)
Canastota, Oct 30 — The double matrimonial event in which Lorenza Montross and Harry Brown, well known Canastota young men, figured at State Bridge in the town of Verona, Oneida county, on Saturday, received a rude jolt early Monday evening when state police came to Canastota and took into custody the four principals.
Charges of kidnapping have been preferred against the two grooms, while the brides, charges of the state, at the Rome Custodial Asylum, have been taken back to the state institution. The brides have been occupants of the State Custodial Asylum for a considerable time. For some time they have been what is known as colonists, charges showing marked improvement in every respect, who have been quartered in colony houses away from the institution and who have been given employment.
The two girls in question have been working in mills at Oriskany Falls. The name of the girl young Brown took as his bride was Louise Pulver, said to be 20 years old and who originally came from Redhook, below Albany. Sarah Hoag was the maiden name of the wife of Montross. In each case the bride is said to be older than the groom.
The Hoag girl for some time was employed as a domestic at South Bay. it is understood that it was during this period that Montross became acquainted with her. Through Montross, Brown became acquainted with the Pulver girl.
It is not known that Brown ever sought the company of persons of the opposite sex. This seems to have been his first venture of any kind with women and it is proving a tough one.
It is not believed here that either young man supposed he was committing a crime either technical or otherwise in marrying the girl of his choice. On the other hand it is said that officers of the Rome Custodial Asylum have had considerable trouble, owing to young men showing too much attention to young women charges and they are disposed to prosecute the present case vigorously.
It is expected that the marriages will be annulled by the state without delay. Both Montross and Brown expect soon to leave with draft contingents.
