Ida Goodwin twin

 - (Times Bulletin dated Friday, April 1, 1966)
"Mrs. Sherer observed her 90th birthday yesterday at her home, which she still maintains alone with her two hands. The birthday celebration was held last Sunday in the community building in Haviland with a pot luck dinner for members of the family. All but two of her children and grandchildren were able to attend.
Mrs. Sherer was born a twin on March 31, 1876. Her twin sister, Lyda Swoveland, died in 1933. She was one of six children; and first saw the light of day in Mercer County. Her brother, Ben Goodwin, died this past weekend, leaving her the last leaf on the family tree. She was able to attend his funeral Tuesday, in Howe, Ind.
Life has always been something of a real challenge for Mrs. Sherer. But she learned to meet the challenge. Her father died when she was only one year old, and her mother passed away when she was 13.
She worked for other families, tended the children, cooked the meals, cleaned the house, milked the cows, churned butter, and learned to do numerous other chores until her marriage to Franklin Sherer on Feb. 13, 1895. The minister they wanted was unable to perform the ceremony, so they were married by a justice of the peace.
Her husband farmed with his father in the Haviland area. Several years after their marriage, they had gone to spend the night because of the cold weather with the elder Sherer, and a fire broke out. All of the children, and members of the two families escaped because Mrs. Sherer had not yet gone to sleep. The house burned to the ground, along with most of the furniture. Mrs. Sherer managed to save some clean clothes for the children. Neighbors took them in temporarily, and provided housing.
The couple observed their golden anniversary in 1945. He has been deceased since 1948.
Asked about her recipe for a ripe old age, she smiled and said: 'Hard work--I took in boarders, cleaned houses, cooked and did whatever came my way to earn a few dollars. I still cook my own meals, so I have no one to blame if my meals aren't on time but myself.' "
