VIENNA — Howard J. Stone 78 of 424 Broadway Rensselaer, died Monday October 4, at Albany Memorial Hospital.
He was bom at Vienna the son of Sherman A. and Elizabeth Saltsman Stone. On November 20, 1920 he was married to Helena A Mullaney in Ilion and later moved to Rensselaer where he was employed by the Niagara Mohawk Power Corporation for 39 years before retiring.
Survivors include his wife, a son Howard T Stone of Rensselaer two daughters, Mrs, Arnold Baird of Rensselaer and Mrs Joseph Soidevere of Scottsdale ,Arizona, two sisters Mrs. Thomas L. Dixon of North Bay and Miss Lucy J Stone of Vienna a brother Rowell Stone of Vienna, 16 grandchildren and two great-grandchildren.
Funeral services were held Thursday October 7 at 8:30 am from W. J. Lyons Funeral Home Rensselaer and at 9:30 am at St. John's Church, Rensselaer with burial in Holy Sepulchre Cemetery, East Greenbush.

Hilbert J. Smith, 53, ex-chief of the local fire department, died yesterday morning at his home, 10 John street, after a long illness. He wis stricken 19 weeks ago yesterday and spent considerable time in the Albany and Little Falls hospitals.
Mr Smith was born In this viliage on September 9, 1988, son of Asa F. Smith and the late May Levee Smith. For a few years, while Hilbert was a boy, the family resided in Canajoharie, but the rest of his life was spent here. He attended the local high school.
As a young man, Mr. Smith entred the employ of the Union Mills. Inc., and served as foreman of the box department. Subsequently, he accepted employment with the local branch of the Little Falls Felt Shoe company, with which he had been connected as shipping clerk for 22 years when ill health necessitated his relinquishing
his work a few months ago,
Mr. Smith was a member of St. John's Reformed church and the Men's club of America, and also of St Johnsville lodge No, 611, F. & A M Although he was principally interested in his home and in his work, Mr. Smith also served as a member of the Iocal volunteer fire department, and 10 years ago served as chief of the department. He was an exempt fireman at the time of his death.
On January 17, 1912, he was married to Florence Stichel, who survives with one daughter, Mrs. Seth Baker, at home and his father, Asa F. Smith also of this village.
The funeral will be held Friday afternoon at 2:30, from the home. Rev. Peter J. Westra, pastor of St. John's Reformed church, will officiate, and burial will be made in Prospect View Cemetery.

Roy P. Newell, 404 W. Walnut St., chairman of the board of Nolan-Hayes ane Warcup Inc., and one of the founders of Nolan - Hayes Fuels, Inc., died yesterday in Rome Hospital.
Mr. Neweill was a native of Southington, Conn. He came to Rome in 1903. He married Olive Mai Fox in Rome in 1906. Mrs. Newell died in 1959.
Mr. Newell was employed by the old Rome Copper and Brass (now Revere) from 1903 to 1909. He then became treasurer and manager of the B. S. Fox Coal Co. In 1952 he became a vice president of Parry-Fox Fuel, Inc.
He had served as chairman of the board for Nolan -Hayes since 1959. He continued in that capacity after the firm merged with the Warcup Oil Co., in 1964.
He was a past treasurer and director of the former Tri-County Fuel Merchants Association. He was elected the first president of the Rome Kiwanis Club in 1921 and had continued active membership. He was instrumental in establishing the Kiwanis Camp, West Lee.
In June 1963, the YMCA gave Mr. Newell its Leaders Fellowship Award for his 47 years continous service to the organization. He had served on the Board of Trustees for 30 years and was a past chairman. He also helped establish the YMCA Boys' Camp.
Mr. Newell was a member of the First Methodist Church, the Rome Club, a life member of the Rome Elks Lodge and the Hathaway Masonic Lodge, which awarded him a 50 year jewel in 1959. He was also a member of the Chamber of Commerce and the ------ Country Club.
He leaves a daughter, Miss Carolyn M. Newell and a son Carl E. Newell, both of Rome and a brother, Raymond Newell, Milford Conn.
The funeral will be at 10:30 tomorrow from the Prince and Boyd Funeral Home with the Rev. Leland W. Webster, pastor of the First Methodist Church, officiating. Burial will be in Rome Cemetery.

Edward Mllllngton Waring, electrical engineer and Inventor, of 48 Valley View Ter., Packanack Lake, died early last night after a short Illness. He was married to the late Myrtle Roantree Waring. Born in Brooklyn, he was a registered professional engineer in New York City. He was a member of the American Institute of Electric Engineering, and the one of the first to graduate from the Pratt Institute. He was the holder of many patents, and a member of the Order of Cincinnati. He Invented the first electric multicloth cutting machine.
Funeral services will be held tomorrow afternoon in a Brooklyn Funeral Home at 2 o'clock. Friends may call at the Robert Moore and Sons Home for Funerals, 384 Totnwa Ave from 7 to 9 p.m. tonight.

MISS CORNELIA JOAN ROANTREE became the bride of Robert Dealey Palmer March 1 at the Congregational Church in Manhasset, L.I. The bride is the daughter of Mr. and Mrs. James Elliott Roantree of Plandome, L.I., who formerly lived here at 3 Picardy lane, Ladue. The Rev. Dr. George G. Parker performed the ceremony by candlelight.
The bride ehose a princess style gown with Alencon lace, embroidered with paillettes and seed pearls, forming the bodice top and sleeves, and Italian silk flaring into an extremely wide skirt. Her veil was gathered to a Jeweled crown. She held a prayer-book overlaid with white orchids and stephantis.
Miss Thelma Gore of Bayside, served as maid of honor and Miss Barbara Coffrey of Port Washington, L.I., and Mrs. Richard L. Foote of Plandome were bridesmaids. Gowned in nile green lace and organza, they wore matching pearl-trimmed headbands and carried yellow freesia and maiden hair fern.
Mr. Palmer, son of Mrs. G. J. Palmer, Houston, and the late Mr. Palmer, was attended by Jerry Moore, Port Washington, best man, and the bride's brothers, James and William J. Roantree; Theodore Hennlng, Brooklyn; Richard Heinl, Manhasset, and Patrick J. Robinson, Toronto, as ushers.
The reception was given at the Port Washington Yacht Club which was decorated with white stock, calla lilies, carnations and roses and greenery.
Mr. Palmer and his bride, who will live in Rowayton, will spend their honeymoon skiing in Canada. The former Miss Roantree was graduated from The Principia here and from House-in-the-Pines Junior College, Norton, Mass. Her husband holds degrees from Rice Institute, Houston, and from the Harvard Graduate School of Business Administration. He served in World War II as a lieutenant (j.g.) in the Navy.

The marriage of Miss Gladys M. Harra, granddaughter of Mr. and Mrs. Ira B. Cronce of Second avenue, Highland Park, and Charles E. Fox, son of Mr. and Mrs. Edwin G. Fox of Canajoharie, N.Y. was solemnized at the Cronce home on Saturday evening at 6 o'clock by Rev. Paul Hayne of the Livingston Avenue Baptist Church.
The bride was attractive in a white brocaded satin, garnitured with draperies of georgette crepe. Her silk net veil was caught up in cap fashion and she carried a sheaf of bride's roses.
There were no attendants. The nuptial music was rendered by Loyal Blaine, pianist, and Miss Isabelle Brylawski, violinist. Following the nuptials a wedding supper was served by Caterer Staplefeld.
Mr. and Mrs. Fox left late in the evening for a wedding trip that includes points of interest in New York State. Upon their return they will make their home in this city.
Mrs. Fox's going-away costume was of brown duvet de laine garnitured with mink furs. A smart nat gave the finishing touch.
Mrs. Fox is a graduate of the High School, class of 1913, while (Mr. Fox is a graduate of Renssaeler Polytechnic Institute, and at present connected with Camp Raritan.

William Campbell Watkins, 92, of 2 Canal St., Fort Plain, died early this morning (Tuesday) at Little Falls Hospital following a lengthy illness.
Born Aug. 6, 1892, in Ammanford, Wales, he was the son of Thomas and Jane Lewis Watkins and came with his family to the United States in 1908. They settled first in Washington, D.C., and later came to New York State.
He graduated from Berlin High School in Rensselaer County and had resided in the Fort Plain area since 1913.
Unable to join the U.S. Forces during World War I, Watkins went to Canada and enlisted in the Canadian Army, serving in the Royal Canadian Engineers for 18 months.
In 1919, he returned to Fort Plain where he and his late brother, Archibald Watkins, started a retail grocery market known as Watkins Brothers. It operated until the former’s retirement in 1961.
A member of the Fort Plain Reformed Church, Mr. Watkins was a
former elder of the church and had served as superintendent of the Sun day school. He was a 65-year member of Fort Plain Lodge No. 433, F&AM, a 60-year member of Fort Plain Post No. 554, American Legion, and a member of the Palatine Shrine Society.
Mr. Watkins was married twice. In 1920, he was wed to Margilynn Fox, who died in 1965. On Feb. 4, 1971, he married Mary Waner Glosser, who survives. Other survivors include a brother, the Rev. Gerald Watkins, St. Petersburg, Fla., and several nieces and nephews.
Funeral services will be held Thursday at 2 p.m. at Swartz Funeral Home Inc., 34 Center St., Fort Plain, with the Rev. Robert Vanderlaan, pastor of the Fort Plain Reformed Church, assisted by Rev. Kenneth Dingman, pastor of St. Paul’s Lutheran Church, officiating.
Calling hours at the funeral home will be 7 to 9 p.m. Wednesday. Masonic services will be held at the funeral home at 7:30 the same evening. Burial will be in Canajoharie Falls Cemetery.
Memorial contributions may be made to the Fort Plain Reformed Church or the Mid-County Volunteer Ambulance Service.

Sylvan Beach — Mrs. Iola Hill, 71, died yesterday in Oneida City Hospital after a long illness.
She was born June 11, 1888, in Town of Vienna, daughter of George and Lucretia Collins Kilts. She was married to Ernest E. Hill in Utica in 1928.
Mrs. Hill lived in Town of Vienna most of her life.
She leaves her husband; a daughter. Mrs. Ned Vale of Camden; a son, Oneida County Democratic Commissioner of Elections and former chairman of the Board of Supervisors, G. Carl Morse of Utica; five
grandchildren; four great grandchildren: three sisters. Mrs. Lulu Ripka of Fish Creek Landing. Mrs. Myra Schaler of Vernon. Mrs. Leon Loomis of Whitelawn; several nieces and nephews.
The funeral will be at 2:30 Saturday from the B. A. Sanborn and Son Funeral Home, Camden, the Rev. Carlton G. Van Ornum, pastor of Ilion Methodist Church, and the Rev. Allison C. Wood. Camden Methodist pastor, officiating Burial will b in North Bay Cemetery.

CAMDEN - Grover C. Morse, 91, of 31 Cooper St., a retired employee of F.S.Hart Furniture Co., MCConnellsville, died Monday in Stonehenge Nursing Home.
He was born in McConnellsville and attended local schools. He married Iola Kilts in McConnellsville in 1906. She died in 1959.
Mr. Morse was a member of the Camden United Methodist Church, a former member of the McConnellsville Fire Department and the Continental Fife and Drum Corps.
He leaves a son, Carl Morse, of Utica, former Oneida County Democrat election commissioner, and a daughter, Mrs. Ned (Eva) Vale of Camden.
The funeral will be at 11 Thursday from the Sanborn Funeral Home. Burial will be in the McConnellsville Cemetery.

SYLVAN BEACH - Ernest E. Hill, 76, of the Vienna Road, died Monday in his home.
He was born in England, son of Ernest W., and Caroline Culliford Hill. He went to Canada in 1918 and came to Sylvan Beach in 1931.
He married Ila Kilts in Sylvan Beach in 1932. Mrs. Hill died in 1959.
Mr. Hill was employed by the Easta Ready Mix Company of Oneida, and he retired several years ago. He was a member of the North Bay Methodist Church, the Sylvan peach Volunteer Fire Department, and the Sylvan Beach American Legion Post.
He leaves a stepdaughter Mrs. Ned (Eva) Vale of Camden, and a stepson, Carl Morris of Utica.
The funeral will be at 1 Thursday from the Sanborn Funeral Home in Camden with burial in the North Bay Cemetery.

CANASTOTA - Mrs Lulu Kilts Ripka, 71 of Fish Creek Landing died Tuesday afternoon at Lenox Memorial Hospital after several years illness.
Born in Vienna, NY, she was the daughter of George and Lucretia Collins Kilts. Her husband Christopher Ripka died Oct. 19, 1956. She is survived by a son, George Ripka of Camden; three daughters, Mrs George Woodcock of Fish Creek, Mrs Glen Henry of Waterville and Mrs Robert Wintees of Canastota; two sisters Mrs Myra Schader of Vernon and Mrs Leon Loomis of Canastota, 13 grandchildren and 24 great-grandchildren.
Services will be at 2 p.m. Friday in the J Homer Ball Funeral Home, 201 James St. Canastota, the Rev. Martin E Ives, Pastor of the Whitelaw Presbyterian Church officiating. burial will be in Grove Cemetery, Higginsville.
Friends may call Wednesday afternoon and Thursday afternoon and evening at the funeral home.

FISH CREEK LANDING - Christopher Ripka, 72, this community, died Oct. 19, 1906, in a Rome hospital after a short illness.
He was born Jan. 21, 1884, in Utica, son onf Charles and Sarah Alexander Ripka. He married Lulu Kilts Jan. 14, 1909 in McConnellsville. They lived here since.
He was employed on the Brge Canal for 40 years and had served as captain of a derick boat. For the past seven years he had been employed by the town of Vienna.
He leaves his wife, three daughters, Mrs. George Woodcock, Fish Creek Landing, Miss Camile Ripka, Waterville and Mrs. Robert Winters, South Bay, a son, George, Camden; 12 grandchildren, seven great grandchildren, a brother Charles, Syracuse and a sister, Mrs. George Laun, Clayville.
The funeral wil be at 2 tomorrow in B. A. Sanborn & Son Funeral Home, Camden, the Rev. George Danso, Episcopal rector in Rome, officiating. Burial will be in Higginsville Cemetery.
