 - Obituary (Find a Grave)
Nancy VanSlyke Nash, died in Chapel Hill, NC on 1/23/93. Preceded in death by husband, Edgar Vanderhoef Nash in 1988. Survived by daughters, Lucinda Nash Dudley of Williamsburg, VA and Bar Harbor, ME, Nancy Nash-Cummings of Windsor, VT; son, Nicholas of White Bear Lake, MN; 5 grandchildren; and 3 great grandchildren.
A memorial service will be held at St. Benedict's Anglican Church in Chapel Hill, NC at 1:30 pm on Tuesday, 1/26/93.
Born in Mpls, she graduated from Northrop Collegiate School in 1927 and attended Wells College in Aurora, NY. In 1932 she married Edgar Nash, and through the next several decades raised her children and worked as a volunteer.
During WWII and the Korean Conflict, Mrs. Nash was active in welfare work for the American Red Cross. She also became involved with the Curative Workshop, served on the boards of Family and Children's Service of Mpls, General Hospital (now Hennepin County Medical Center), of Abbott Hospital (now Abbott Northwestern Hospital) and of St. Mary's Hall, Faribault (now Shattuck-St. Mary's), and was President of the MN Wells Club. She was also a member of the Jr. League of Mpls.
Her husband retired in 1969, and later that year, they moved to Chapel Hill, NC. Continuing her volunteer work, Mrs. Nash worked with Reach For Recovery, served on the Home Health Board of Chapel Hill and on several committees of Carol Woods, the retirement community where the Nashes took up residence in 1980.
Mrs. Nash was a member of the National Society of Colonial Dames in America in the State of NC, the Women's Club of Mpls, the Chapel Hill Country Club, the Women's Republican Club of Chapel Hill, and the Chapel Hill Garden Club.
In her last years, her energies were diminished by a series of health problems, but her lifelong affection for dogs, flowers, travel, theatre and ballet, and other people (not necessarily in that order) never flagged. A vivacious hostess who loved to entertain, she was never happier than creating a good party where both the shy and the bold came to appreciate her sense of humor and the twinkle in her eye. Few will ever write a more graceful note than she, and after meeting her, no one was a stranger more than an instant.
Memorials are preferred to the Reserve Fund at Carol Woods, 750 Weaver Dairy Road, Chapel Hill, NC, 27514.
