- Death Announcement (Find A Grave)
Mr. and Mrs. Samuel Pennington, Pleasant Dale, were killed Oct. 3, 1969 in an automobile accident near Minneapolis, Minn., while on vacation. The double funeral was held Tuesday at Bethlehem Lutheran Church, Pleasant Dale, with Rev. Richard Hoffman in charge of the service. Burial was in Pleasant Dale Cemetery. Both were members of Bethlehem Lutheran Church. Pennington was a veteran of World War I, and a member of the American Legion.
Surviving are a son, Edward, Worth, Minn.; four daughters, Mrs. Ivan Borgman (Adeline), Beaver City; Mrs. Earl Martin (Donna), Lincoln; Mrs. Byron Beaty (Phyllis), Englewood, Colo.; and Mrs. Dale Boerrigter (June), Lakewood, Calif.; 16 grandchildren and 4 great grandchildren. Also surviving Mrs. Pennington are a sister, Mrs. Emma Stuebbe, Valders, Wisc., and a brother, Dick Bosma, Aberdeen, S. Dak.

Ruth Summers Van Slyke passed away Tuesday, August 21, 2007, at a care center at the age of 98. Ruth was born to Jacob and Grace Summers in Niangua, Missouri, on May 28, 1909. She moved to Idaho with her family in 1925. Ruth attended Caldwell schools and the College of Idaho, where she earned her teaching degree.
Ruth married Herbert Van Slyke in 1929. She taught school in Star and Notus. In 1950, she taught in Caldwell's Van Buren School. She moved to Rupert in 1961. In her 27 years of teaching in the public school system, she received many awards. One year, Ruth received a special award from Governor Don Samuelson as "The Outstanding Teacher of the Year." After all these years, students from the past still came to see her.
Church was always special to Ruth. She was a charter member of the Treasure Valley Christian Church. Ruth was also a charter member of P.E.O., Chapter BY, in Nampa.
Ruth is survived by her three sons, Leland (Lois), Milton (Irene), and Delbert (Barbara); her brother, Les (Betty) Summers; her sister, Hazel Root; numerous grandchildren, great-grandchildren, and several nieces and nephews. She was preceded in death by her husband, Herbert; her parents; and her sister, Lois Johnston.
