Central Bridge (Schoharie County): John R. VanDerwerken 95, of Rte. 30A in Central Bridge died peacefully at home on Thursday, October 6th, 2022.
John was born July 2, 1927 in Central Bridge, a son of Elon R. and Florence M. (Drumm) VanDerwerken. He was the grandson of Robert and Catherine VanDerwerken and Charles and Sarah Drumm. He was predeceased by his brother James and his Sister Francis Lamonica. John was born in the farmhouse and except for one semester when he lived in Evanston, Illinois, while attending Northwestern University, spent his entire life on the farm in Central Bridge. He attended grade school at the one room schoolhouse in Central Bridge and graduated from Schoharie High School in 1945. John took pride in the fact that the class of 1945 was unique among any of the high school classes that ever graduated in our country; it was the only one that had one president of the United States during the entire twelve year period-Franklin Delano Roosevelt. In addition to the one semester at Northwestern, he also studied a semester at SUNY Cobleskill and complete a course at Cornell University.
John was on inactive duty in the Army Reserves during the Korean War. He worked summers at the Beech Nut factory in Canajoharie and on the road crew for the NYS DOT. He also worked at the General Electric Power Company in Schenectady for three years. John was a real estate broker with TL Wright and Century 21 Rural Estates for 40 years.
The passion of his life was the family farm. His father purchased the property in 1926 and ran a dairy operation. Central Bridge Farms was the first farm in the county to use electricity (barns were electrified long before the house) and one of the farm tractors (Massey Harris 101 junior) was the first tractor that was self-starting on rubber tires manufactured after WWII. After taking over the farm from his father, John was a poultry and cattle farmer for 60 years. At the peak of the poultry operation, John had over 10,000 chickens. John started a black angus herd in 1964. At the peak of operation, he ran over 200 cattle on 500 acres of land.
John's memberships and affiliations included; NYS Angus Association, American Angus Association, NYS Beef Cattleman's Association, Schoharie County Farm Bureau, Town of Esperance Councilman and Deputy Supervisor, Town of Esperance Historical Society President, Schoharie County Planning Board, Schoharie County Extension Service, NYS Board of Realtors, and the Town of Esperance Zoning Board of Appeals. He was a lifelong member of Bethany Evangelical Lutheran Church in Central Bridge, often serving as a deacon and an usher. John's interests included history, baseball (especially the Red Sox), travel logs, eating out, good movies (especially John Wayne), and watching Jeopardy.
John married Dora Leah Comeau on January 1, 1954 and together they had three children. They divorced in 1968. Dora predeceased John on July 29, 2022. He married Joan Chandler Williams on July 12, 1974. Joan predeceased John on March 7, 2022.
John is survived by three children; Roger (Jacque) VanDerwerken of Escondido, CA, Alice VanDerwerken (David Sprague) of Rome, ME, and Mark VanDerwerken of Central Bridge who lovingly cared for him. He is also survived by his daughter-in-law, Anna Trigg VanDerwerken, six grandchildren, six great-grandchildren, numerous nieces and nephews including special nephew Nick Lamonica and grandnephew David Lamonica, along with his sister-in-law, Lois VanDerwerken.

She was a member of the Eastern Star in Brewster as well as a member of the Teachers Union at the local, state, and national level as well as being a part of the Schoharie Hay Shakers. Joan's family had ties to American history such as her original ancestor immigrating on the Mayflower in 1620 and having another ancestor Mary Easty, hung as a witch, during the Salem witch trials in 1692.
