 - Death Announcement (The Evening Telegram, Herkimer-Ilion, NY, Wednesday, July 7, 1954)
FONDA—Frank E. Bellows, 63, a Fonda resident since early spring, either slipped or fell from an outboard motor boat last night and drowned at a point about one-half mile west of the Fonda Barge Canal terminal.
The Montgomery County Sheriff's office, which investigated, reported that Bellows, in a boat with Clifford Cudney and George Emden, suddenly stood up, shouted, and then slipped or fell towards the side of the boat, causing it to overturn. It was thought he might have suffered a heart attack.
Cudney and Emden, also of Fonda, kept Bellows afloat and pushed the boat to the north shore of the Mohawk River. Cudney then went to the nearby home of Seymour Spencer, who notified the sheriff's office.
Emden meanwhile applied artificial respiration until police officers arrived. Dr. Michael Kizun, Montgomery County coroner, gave a verdict of accidental death by drowning when all efforts failed to revive Bellows.
A silk weaver, he had spent most of his life in Fultonville, where he was born Dec. 10, 1891. He leaves one son, Howard, Tribes Hill.

 - Newspaper Article (The Los Angeles Times, Los Angeles, CA, Monday, Nvember 26, 1923)
MOTHER SEEKS TO RETAIN HER SON
A fight by Ray Hastings, organist of the Temple Baptist Church, to obtain the custody of his son, Ross Ray, will start in Superior Court this afternoon. Mrs. Mabell Hastings, who divorced the organist, will fight to retain the boy, and in her answer, prepared for filing, accuses him of undue association with two women.
Accusations naming Virginia Cox, motion-picture actress, and Gladys Hoskins, secretary to the Temple Baptist Church pastor, were made by Mrs. Hastings in her original divorce complaint. She withdrew these accusations and based her complaint on desertion, she said in her answer, to save his reputation.
Hastings got a temporary restraining order, signed by Judge Crail, to prevent Mrs. Hastings from taking Ross Ray Hastings out of Los Angeles county. He declared Mrs. Hastings was not a fit person to have the boy's custody because she had been too friendly with Capt. Summervllle, an Alaska fur farmer, who is described in the affidavit as wealthy; that she had gone through a form of marriage ceremony in Alaska with Capt. Summervllle and that the wealthy fur farmer had accompanied her buck to Los Angeles.
He feared, he said, that Capt. Summerville and Mrs. Hastings were planning to take the boy back to Alaska with them. The youngster is now in Page Military Academy.
Mrs. Hastings retorts that her husband is unfit to have the boy's custody, and denies the Summerville accusations. There has been no intention on her part to take the boy away from Page's, she said. Judge Summerfield awarded Mrs. Hastings an interlocutory divorce decree on July 12, Hastings putting in no defense.
  S. S. Hahn is Mrs. Hastings's attorney. Woodruff & Shoemaker appear for the organist.

LOTVILLE An area soldier, missing in action in Korea for the past three years, has now been declared officially dead. He was Cpl. Robert Fitzer, who would have been 25 if he had lived.
The young man was a son of Mr. and Mrs. Clyde Fitzer, who reside in the Lotville section of the Town of Oppenheim.
A letter from the Department of Defense, received by his parents the past week end, states that the previous designation of  "missing in action" is being changed now to one declaring that he met death. It indicates that efforts to determine exact details of his fate have been futile.
Cpl. Fitzer was born in the Town of St. Johnsville, near Palatine hurch, on Sep. 18, 1928, a son of Clyde and Freda Moyer Fitzer. The family resided in various places around this section, and for several years past had occupied a farm in the Lotville section.
Robert attended the Oppenheim Fphratah Central School, and enlisted in the Army when he was 18. Previously he had worked at the home farm and in the factory of the Hubbard Heel Company in Dolgeville.
The notification that he was missing in action came to his parents almost exactly three years ago now at holiday time. Since then there had been a few communications from the government, indicating that efforts to learn his fate were being continued.
The family retained hope when repatriation of prisoners began that he might be among them, or that some of the released prisoners might be able to shed some light on what had happened to him. This, it appears, was not to be, and the last Department of Defense letter indicates that nothing further has been learned, and that he must now be considered to have lost his life.
Besides the parents, Cpl. Fitzer is survived by two sisters, Mrs.
Daniel Nellis, Town of Palatine, 0and Miss Clara Fitzer, at home.
