After Cooperstown State Police had led a search Wednesday afternoon and evening of last week for Mrs. Mae Miller Griffin, thirty-one-year-old Richfield Springs woman, who had been missing from her home since. Monday night, she came out of hiding at 10 o'clock Wednesday night and sought food and protection in the home of Mrs. Julia Brooks, Hotel street, of that village.
Meanwhile, Sgt. John L. Cunningham, Corp. D. R. Keown, and Tr. M. V. Haskins arrested Leo Griffin, the husband, Thursday afternoon on a disorderly conduct charge. Arraigned before Justice B. J. Filkins, Griffin was committed to Otsego county jail in default of bail. On Monday he was released on bail and the case sent to the Children's Court.
It was learned that Mrs. Griffin had walked out of her own home around midnight Monday in zero weather without coat or outer clothing to take refuge in the upper loft of the Brooks barn. There she had remained without food and protection from the cold, crouched on a mattress with discarded clothing, which she found near the matress, as her only covering.
Mrs. Brooks gave her food, hot coffee and lodging for the night. She reported her appearance to the Police Thursday morning as they were renewing their search.
She is the mother of several children, the oldest of whom is nine years and the youngest five month. Two died in infancy. Griffin had recently returned home from Bethlehem. Pa., where he had been employed.
