  Jas. H. Getman, Nelliston, Dies ~ Survivor of 23 Battles and Skirmishes of Civil War Passes Away
  James H. Getman, aged 86, a lifelong resident of Nelliston, died at his home in that village last evening at 11:50 o'clock, after an illness of three weeks, of infirmities of old age. Mr. Getman was born in Ephratah, August 13, 1841, the son of Joshua and Catherine Lampman Getman. He was a member of Klock post, No. 70, G.A.R., of Fort Plain, and served in the Civil war. He enlisted at Fonda and was mustered into service August 26, 1862, as a member of Company E 115th New York Volunteers. He was honorably discharged at Albany, May 15, 1865. During the war he took part in 23 battles and skirmishes, including the battles of Gettysburg and Harper's Ferry. He was taken prisoner at Fort Fisher, which was undermined and blown up while the prisoners were asleep. He was also bayoneted in the left leg.
  The surviving relatives are two nieces, Mrs. Dora Saltsman of St. Johnsville and Miss Lola Getman of Chicago; three nephews, Elmer Snell and Clarence Getman of St. Johnsville and Frank Getman of Chicago.
  The funeral will be held Thursday afternoon at 2 o'clock at the home, the Rev. Mr. Krulzenga, pastor of the Reformed church of Fort Plain, officiating, Interment will be in Fort Plain cemetery. Military honors will be given at the grave.

  The funeral of Oliver Suits was held from his late home on Center street, Saturday afternoon with the Rev. H. Curtis Ficken of St. John's Reformed church, of which the deceased was a member, officiating. Mr. Suits, the son of Christopher and Nancy Saltsman Suits, was born at Stone Arabia and was 97 years of age; he was one of a family of nine children, of which a sister, Miss Kate Suits with whom he always resided, is now the only member of the family surviving. 'Mr. Suits was never married. Sixty years of his life was spent in Stone Arabia when be moved to St. Johnsville. By occupation he was a farmer. In politics he was a Republican and his boast was that he bad never used intoxicating drinks or tobacco to which he attributes his long life. He was a member of the St. Johnsville Lodge No. 611, F. and A. M. The interment was made on Prospect View Cemetery.

Horatio Crouse

 - Horatio's parentage is a bit confusing. Census records seem to indicate that his father was Benjamin Crouse. An obituary identifies him as the brother of Mrs John Brower, daughter of Robert Crouse. These records reflect the latter source as being most likely accurate. Perhaps he was living with and working for a relative during the 1850 census, after his father died.

  Horatio Crouse, aged 78 years, died Monday morning at 4 o'clock at his home in the village of Ephratah. He had been in failing health for the past two years. He was born in St. Johnsville but spent most of his life in the village of Ephratah. He leaves, besides his widow, two nephews, Delos and Charles Brower of Johnstown, and two nieces, Miss Amanda Brower of Johnstown and Mrs. D. A. Fuller of Buffalo.

  Philip Frederick, a well known resident of the town of Johnstown, died at his home about four miles west of the city Saturday afternoon about 6 o'clock. Mr. Frederick was 70 years of age and had been ill about two months with heart trouble. He is survived by the widow and two brothers, Peter and William, of the town of Johnstown, and three sisters, Mrs. William Plank, and Mrs. Margaret Youngs of Illinois and Mrs. William Denmark of this city. The funeral will be held Wednesday morning at 11 o'clock from the late home, Rev. H. Foster Stone of this city will officiate and the interment will be made at Ephratah.

"Volkert Getman, a native of St. Johnsville, Montgomery County, came to Lyme among the early settlers, and here remained until his death, in 1884, aged 80 years. He married Margaret Flanders, and their children were Abner, Martin, Mary, Elizabeth, and Catharine, deceased, and Christopher. The latter was born in St. Johnsville, and at the age of 10 years removed to Lyme with his parents, where he now resides. He married Mercy Ann, daughter of William and Sarah A. (Henderson) Blodgett, and their children are William B., Marcelotte, and Adelbert A. The latter, born in this town, wedded with Emma, daughter of Ellis and Julia (Weaver) Ryder, and they have one daughter, Minnie. Adelbert A. Getman graduated from the medical college at Albany, in 1871, and at the age of 19 commenced the practice of medicine and of surgery in the village of Chaumont. In 1872 and 1874, he was one of the corps of physicians and surgeons in charge of the Park Hospital, New York city, serving in all about one year. He later returned to Chaumont, where he has since conducted a successful practice. He is prominent in town affairs, and served as supervisor two years, in 1877 and '78."
