  Niles L. Harter, 82, Route 69, East Rodman, died at 2 p.m. Sunday at the Samaritan-Keep Home, Watertown, where he had been a resident since May 9.
  The funeral will be 11 a.m. Wednesday at the Reed & Benoit Funeral Home, with the Rev. H. Arthur Dunn, pastor of the Parkside Bible Church, officiating. Burial will be in Fairview Cemetery, Rodman.
   Calling hours will be from 2 to 4 and 7 to 9 p.m. Tuesday at the funeral home. Members of the Rodman Masonic Lodge 506 will conduct a memorial service at 8:30 p.m. Tuesday at the funeral home.
   Contributions may be made to the Parkside Bible Church memorial fund.
   Surviving are his wife, Lola; two daughters, Diane C. Russell, Watertown, and Mrs. Guadalupe (Keitha) Chapa, Adams; seven grandchildren, seven great-grandchildren; two brothers, Carl R., Watertown, and Earl P., South Rutland; several nieces and nephews.
   Four brothers, Glenn, Lyle, Floyd and Ralph, and two sisters, Jennie Davis and Gladys Stuart, died before him.
   Born Dec. 3, 1909, in the town of Rutland, son of James and Mary Cummings Harter, he was educated at Watertown High School and married Lola Wright of Watertown April 23, 1937, in the Rutland Congregational Church manse with the Rev. Red T. Thayer, then pastor, officiating. Folowing their marriage, Mr. Harter operated the family farm on the Cook Road in South Rutland. He later purchased a milk route.
   Mr. Harter was also employed for a time at Fisher Gage in Watertown until his retirement. He was then employed for several years at the Burrville Cider Mill.
  He and his wife had resided in East Rodman for 50 years.
   Mr. Harter was a member of Rodman Masonic Lodge 506, the Copenhagen Senior Citizens, and attended Parkside Bible Church. He also bowled with the Club 55 League at Watertown Bowl for several years.

   WATERTOWN, N.Y. — Lola May Harter, 93, formerly of East Rodman, died Saturday at the Samaritan Keep Nursing Home where she had been a resident for three years.
   Mrs. Harter was a counter clerk at F.W. Woolworth's, Hardy’s Tea Room, Chapin’s Florist, all of Watertown, Kraft Foods in Tylerville, and the Burrville Cider Mill.
  Born Jan. 15, 1914, in the town of Watertown, a daughter of Willard and Jennie Haskins Wright, she graduated from Watertown High School in 1933.
   She married Niles L. Harter on April 23, 1937, at the Rutland Congregation Church. He died May 17, 1992.
   Mrs. Harter attended the Parkside Bible Church, enjoyed flower gardening and bowled in senior leagues in Watertown.
   She is survived by two daughters and a son-in-law, Diane C. Russell, Watertown, Keitha and Guadalupe Chapa, Copenhagenl; seven grandchildren, 17 great grandchildren; several nieces and nephews; two sisters-in-law, Evelyn Harter, Watertown and Lois Harter, Canton.
   Two sisters, Lillian Glasier and Philena Brown, and three brothers, Raymond, Lester and Willard Wright died before her.
   The funeral will be 11 a.m. Wednesday at the Reed & Benoit Funeral Home. Spring burial will be in Fairview Cemetery, Rodman. Calling hours are 2 to 4 and 7 to 9 p.m. Tuesday at the funeral home.

  Carl R. Harter, 86, Centennial Apartments, died Sunday at Samaritan-Keep Home.
  Mr. Harter worked for Kraft Cheese Co., Lowville, for 10 years and retired from Upstate Amusement Co. after 35 years of service.
   He was a life member of Watertown Elks Lodge 496 and Eagles Aerie 782, a 50-year member of United Commercial Travelers and a member of Rutland Congregational Church.
   Born July 3, 1912, son of James R. and Mary C. Cummings Harter of South Rutland, he was educated in town of Rutland and rural schools.
   He married Evelyn Baker, daughter of Howard and Doris Baker, on Aug. 28, 1936, at Pulaski.
   Surviving besides his wife are a son, Robert, Watertown; three daughters, Mrs. John (Patricia) Conboy, Schoharie, Mrs. James (Shirley) Bender, Bradford Woods, Pa., and Mrs. Sam (Bettie) Caswell, Watertown; a brother, Earl, South Rutland; eight grandchildren, four great-grandchildren and several nieces and nephews.
   A graveside service will be at the family's convenience in Brookside Cemetery.
   Calling hours will be from 2 to 4 and 7 to 9 p.m. Tuesday at Reed & Benoit Funeral Home.

  Ralph W. Harter, 37, manager of the Copenhagen Branch of the Northern New York Trust Company, Assistant Secretary of the Trust Company, and an overseas veteran of World War II, died at 12:15 this morning at his home on Cataract St., Copenhagen, after an illness of nearly two years. Death was caused by an intestinal ailment.
  Funeral services will be held Saturday afternoon at 1:30 from his home and at 2 in the Congregational Church at Copenhagen, Rev. Wesley P. Nelson, pastor of the church, officiating.
  Place of burial was undecided this morning.
   His brothers will serve as bearers at the funeral.
  Surviving him are his wife, Mrs. Emily R. Watts Harter, two daughters, Mary Lee and Nadine E.; his parents, Mr. and Mrs. James R. Harter, South Rutland; his two sisters Mrs. Edwin (Jennie A.) Davis, Adams Center, and Mrs. Edward (Gladys) Stuart, town of Rutland; and six brothers, Glenn C. and Floyd J. Harter, town of Rutland, Lyle H. Harter, 109 Central St., Niles L. Harter, East Rodman, and Carl R., Massey Street Road and Earl P. Harter, North Rutland.
  Mr. Harter had undergone three operations for the intestinal condition with which he was afflicted. The first was performed March 26 and the second, October 13, both in the Mercy Hospital. Early last month he entered a Buffalo hospital where he underwent the third operation January 16th.
  Since his return from Buffalo about a month ago, he had been confined to his bed critically ill, hope having been abandoned for his recovery.
  He was a nephew of Mrs. Minnie B. Cummins (sic) Harter, 77, of 715 Franklin Street, who died Tuesday morning at her home and whose funeral was held this morning. She was buried at Glenwood Cemetery.
  Manager of the Copenhagen branch of the Trust Company for more than five years, Mr. Harter, was one of the assistant secretaries elected at the annual meeting of the bank's directors January 31 less than a month ago.
  He had been manager of the Copenhagen branch, formerly Copenhagen National Bank, since the Trust Company purchased the bank in October 1947.
  Mr. Harter was born December 18, 1915 on a farm near South Rutland, a son of James R. and Mary L. Cummings Harter. He was educated in the grade schools of Rutland and the Watertown High School from which he was graduated in January 1932.
   Later, he completed a Syracuse University extension course at the high school and a correspondence course of LaSalle University.
  Immediately after his graduation from high school, he entered the employ of the Trust Company, serving first in the accounting and note departments and was a note teller.
  He was in the note department of the bank when he left his position to enter the army in May 1943 for World War II service. He saw action in the European Theater of operations, including Belgium and Germany, and remained in the military service until January 1946. Sent overseas in October 1944, he served with a heavy ordnance maintenance company.
  Following the war he returned to the service of the bank and remained in the Trust Company offices until he was appointed manager of the Copenhagen branch in October 1947.
  On July 7, 1939, Mr. Harter married Miss Emily R. Watts, Deferiet, daughter of Mrs. Flora L. Watts, now of Watertown, and the late Daniel H. Watts, Deferiet. The ceremony was performed at the First Presbyterian Church, Carthage, by Rev. Frederick M. Horninghouse the pastor of the church. The bride had taught at Beaver Falls. Mr. Harter was a note teller at the Trust Company at the time of the marriage.
  He and Mrs. Harter lived in the Watetown area after their marriage and later in Burrville, but after his appointment to the Copenhagen branch, they sold their Burrville home and purchased a home in Copenhagen where they established residence in 1948.
  Mr. Harter was a member of the Orient Lodge 238, F. & A.M., Copenhagen, member of the past noble grand of the Copenhagen Lodge of Odd Fellows, a member of the Lowville Lodge of Elks, a member of the American Legion and the Congregational Church of Burrville.
  He was a past president of the Jefferson-Lewis Bankers Association and in 1948 was appointed key banker for Lewis County of the New York State Bankers Association. As key banker he represented the state association's committee on agriculture and all the matters involving banker-farmer relationships in Lewis county. He was president of the 4-H Club Alumni Association of Jefferson County in 1935 and again in 1936 and at the time of his death was chairman of the 4-H Executive Committe..
  Active in community affairs since moving to Copenhagen, he had been clerk of the Copenhagen Central School Board for the past few years and was a member of the Copenhagen Men's Club, was active in the Jefferson-Lewis Council Boy Scouts of America, was organizer of the boy scouts troop of the village and served as troop committeeman and treasurer.

  HENDERSON HARBOR -- Emily Watts Harter, 79, Palm Harbor, Fla., a summer resident of Henderson Harbor and retired teacher, died Sunday in Mease Hospital, Safety Harbor, Fla.
  There will be a memorial service in July in the Watertown area.
  Arrangements are with National Cremation Society.
  Donations may be made to the American Cancer Society.
  Surviving are two daughters, Nadine Harter Finkelstein, Erie, Pa., and Mary Lee Harter Gayne, New Orleans, La., and five grandchildren.
  Two sisters, Florence Watts Fagan and Doris Watts Smith, and a brother, Robert L. Watts, died before her.
  Born July 29, 1915, in Moira, a daughter of Daniel H. and Flora Lee Watts, she graduated from Carthage Central School and Carthage training class.
  Mrs. Harter taught at Crystal Spring, Clayton, for three years, and then attended Purdue University, West Lafayette, Ind., for a year. She graduated from Potsdam Normal School in 1938 and was an elementary teacher at Beaver Falls.
  She married Ralph William Harter on July 7, 1939, in the First Presbyterian Church, Carthage, with Rev. Frederick M. Homrighouse officiating.
  The couple resided in Watertown and Burrville and moved to Copenhagen in 1948. Mrs. Harter taught kindergarten at Copenhagen Central School for a time. Mr. Harter, manager of the Copenhagen branch of the former Northern New York Trust Co., died Feb. 19, 1953.
  Mrs. Harter received a bachelor's degree in elementary education from Potsdam State University College in 1955 and taught first grade and was a reading consultant for Watertown city schools until retiring in 1976.
  She was a member of Delta Kappa Gamma Society, Teachers Retired in Florida, the New York State Retired Teachers Association, the American Association of University Women, Order of the Eastern Star, First Presbyterian Church, Watertown, and the United Presbyterian Church, Safety Harbor.

  WATERTOWN, N.Y. — Earl “Pete” Harter, 88, of County Route 35, Canton, formerly of Tylerville, died Thursday afternoon at the Canton-Potsdam Hospital, Potsdam, where he had been a patient for three days.
   Mr. Harter was a Superintendent of Highways for the Town of Rutland, serving for 10 years.
   Born in the town of Rutland, Aug. 23, 1918, a son of James R. and Mary Cummings Harter, he was educated in local schools.
   Mr. Harter served in Germany with the US Army during WW II. Following his honorable discharge from the military, he returned to the north country. He worked for the Kraft Milk Plant in Copenhagen as a route driver picking up milk cans on his route.
   After leaving his post as Town of Rutland Highway superintendent, he was a heavy equipment operator for Northern Asphalt until his retirement.
   He married Lois K. Hoke, June 7, 1948. Mr. and Mrs. Harter moved to Canton three years ago to be near family.
   Mr. Harter was a member of the Orient Lodge, F & AM, Copenhagen, Rutland Fire Department and the South Rutland Grange.
   Besides his wife, he is survived by a son and daughter-in-law, Donald E. and Kathryn E., Asheboro, N.C., a daughter and son-in-law, Linda M. and Mark A. Powers, Canton. Five grandchildren, one great-grandson. Several nieces and nephews. Two sisters-in-law, Evelyn and Lola Harter, Watertow
  He was predeceased by two sisters, Jennie A. Davis and Gladys M. Stuart, and six brothers, Glenn C., Lyle H., Floyd J., Niles L., Carl R., and Ralph W.
   The funeral will be 11 a.m. Tuesday at the Reed & Benoit Funeral Home. Burial will be in Brookside Cemetery. Calling hours are 2 to 4 and 6 to 8 p.m. Monday at the funeral home.

   Linda is survived by her husband Mark Powers; her mother Lois Harter; daughter Stacie and Aloysius Locy Jr.; son Darren Powers; brother Donald Harter, Asheboro, N.C.; grandchildren Nicholas, Ellaina and Kaeden Locy and several nieces and nephew. She is predeceased by her father Earl Harter.
   Linda was born on January 25, 1950 in Watertown, NY to Earl Pete Harter and Lois Hoke. She graduated from Copenhagen Central School in 1968 and the Watertown School of Commerce in 1979. On August 11, 1973 at the Congregational Church in Rutland, NY she was married to Mark Powers. She worked for Wager Construction Company, Barton Builders Construction and then was the tax collector for the village of Potsdam from 1985 till the present. Linda enjoyed quilting, crocheting and reading.

  WATERTOWN - Francis J Haynes, 34, of 25 East Hills appartments, died yesterday at Jefferson County Sanatorium where he had been a patient for 18 months, He had been in poor health for years.
  Mr. Haynes was born inthe town of Leray. He had worked as a service station attendant. He is survived by his mother, Mrs. Nellie N, Haynes, RD 2, his wife, Mrs Doris N Timmerman Haynes, three daughters, Sylvia Ann, 9, Nellie Jean, 7 and Eleanor 4 1/2, a sister, Mrs Angus Benway, Black River, rd; two brothers, Irwin RD 2m and Leslie of Syracuse.
  The funeral will be from the Reed and Benoit funeral home tomorrow afternoon with burial in North Watertown.

  Miss Eleanor Kay Haynes, daughter of Mrs. Doris Haynes, 805 Sherman street, and the late Francis Haynes, was married to Dewitt W. Nichols, son of Mr. and Mrs. Ernest W. Nichols, Watertown, Star route, Friday at 8 p.m. in the First Presbyterian church, with Rev. John B. Smiley, pastor, officiating.
  Given in marriage by Nicholas Vesico, the bride wore a street length long sleeved brocade dress. Her shoulder length illusion veil was held by a satin rose.
  Mrs. Lynn E. Truesdell was matron of honor and Lynn E. Truesdell was best man. Bruce A. McDonald was usher.
  A reception was held in the church lounge. After a trip to New York city, the couple will live at Watertown, Star route.
  Mrs. Nichols is a 1967 graduate of Watertown High school and attended Plus Calculator and Key Punch in Syracuse. She is employed at Jefferson Community
college.
  Mr. Nichols is a 1965 graduate of Watertown High school and attends apprentice school of the Black Clawson company. He is a member of the army reserve and is employed by Chapin Florist.
