 - Obituary (The Rome Daily Sentinel, NY, Monday, January 8, 1917)
Marcy, Jan. 8.—Carroll C. Potter, a lifelong resident of the town of Marcy and one of the best known farmers in Oneida county, died on Saturday night at the home of his niece, Mrs. K. A. Humphrey. He was in his 85th year.
Mr. Potter died in the home where he was born. Three years ago be retired from active farming and went to North Carolina. Upon returning last June be made his home on the farm where he had spent most of his life and with his niece, who saw to it that he obtained every comfort.
Mr. Potter was born in Marcy, September 19, 1832. In this country the earliest members of the family settled near Bennington, Vt. His father was William Potter and his mother Angelina Brlggs of Great Barrington, Mass. The family came to Oneida county from Bennington in 1826 and has lived here ever since. One of his ancestors was Griscom Potter, who fought with Ethan Allen at Ticonderoga. Former Senator Edmunds of Vermont was also related to the same family.
Mr. Potter was educated in the schools of Marcy and graduated from Whitestown Seminary in 1853. He was the last survivor of the members of his class. After leaving the seminary he studied law for a year and a half in the office of William Merrill a prominent attorney of Whitestown, but his health failed and he went west and for two years was located at Fond du Lac, Wis. He returned to this county and was for a year employed in the engineering department of the Utica & Black River Railroad, which was being constructed at that time. He again went west and located at Fort Wayne, Ind., where he remained for nearly a year, employed in the engineering department of the Toledo, Wabash & St. Louis Railroad. Then Mr. Potter returned to Marcy, which had been his home since. He engaged in farming and was very successful in it, having a farm of over 100 acres. Of late he had remained on the farm in the summer and spent his winters in Utica.
Since about 1872, when Hon. Samuel Campbell was its president, Mr. Potter had been a member of the Central New York Farmers' Club, and no one in its ranks was better known, or a more able debater or intelligent writer. He was a charter member of the Marcy Grange, No. 720, and served as overseer in it. During tbe civil war the towns of Floyd and Marcy constituted one district for the raising of soldiers. While the men were at the front a reserve corps or home guard of about 80 was organized and in this Mr. Potter was captain for two years. Col. I. J. Gray of Whitesboro was the commander of the regiment.
In politics Mr. Potter was a Democrat and frequently was a delegate to district, county and state conventions. He had held various minor political offices and for twenty years was justice of the peace in this town. He was a member of the association which conducted the Marcy Center cheese factory and he served it as president for three or four years. He became a Mason in Utica Lodge, No. -, about the year 1878, and had since held his membership in it. He was also a member of Oneida Chapter, No. 57, R. A M.
For many years Mr. Potter had been a member of the Baptist Church of Marcy and also had served on its board of trustees. He was a very intelligent, well informed man of the strictest integrity and was held in high regard by all who knew him. No man in the county was better known or more highly respected.
In 1862 Mr. Potter married Miss Sarah Getman of Mohawk, who died in May, 1907. He leaves no children. He is survived by one brother, H. J. Potter of Marcy, and two sisters, Mrs. W. D. Wilcox and Miss Angeline Brlggs Potter, both of Utica.

 - John, a Banker, was born near Springfield, Ohio, December 8th, 1810, being the son of Cooper and Elizabeth (Reeder) Ludlow, both of whose families came originally from the State of New Jersey. His grandfather, John Ludlow, was brother to Israel Ludlow, one of the founders of Cincinnati, who emigrated to Ohio in 1790 and was the first sheriff of Hamilton county. His maternal grandfather, Jacob Reeder, also emigrated to Ohio, then a part of the Northwestern Territory, about the year 1790, and settled in Clarke county in 1804, about the same time that Cooper Ludlow took up his residence near Springfield. Mr. Ludlow was educated in the common schools of his native village, and when sixteen years of age was sent to Cincinnati to learn the drug business. In 1835 he returned to Springfield and established himself in the drug trade, in which he continued nearly thirty years. During a period of twelve or fifteen years, while thus engaged, he practiced dentistry, for which he was in every way competent. Upon the organization of the Springfield Bank, in 1851, he was chosen one of its directors, and on December 11th, 1857, became President of the institution, an office which he still holds. In 1864, under the operation of the acts of Congress, the institution was erected into the First National Bank of Springfield. Mr. Ludlow's career, while it has not been an exciting or varied one, has been exceedingly busy and useful. He has been closely identified with the growth and commercial prosperity of his county, and has given repeated evidence of his public spirit in advocating and supporting local improvements. Since the year 1842 he has been a communicant of the Episcopal Church, and has always been active in the work of building up and sustaining its parish. For more than twenty years he has been the senior warden of that church, and is one of its most influential members. In all Christian work he has been foremost. For fourteen years he was Treasurer of the Clarke County Bible Society, and has organized and given liberal aid to many benevolent movements. Mr. Ludlow was originally an old-line Whig, but upon the organization of the Republican party he became identified with it, having always been an anti-slavery advocate. He has kept aloof from political life, and has only held such municipal offices as the duty of a citizen plainly required. Some time since he placed in the Ohio Historical Society's library, at Cleveland, many interesting records of the pioneers of Clarke county, which he had preserved. He published in the Springfield journals a series of biographical sketches, drawn from his recollections of the old settlers, which were very interesting. He was married on August 31st, 1835, to Elmira, daughter of General Frederick Gitman, of Herkimer county, New York. They have had three children, Frederick G., Charles and a daughter named Ellen, who married Asa S. Bushnell, of Springfield.
