 - He graduated from Yale 6-30-1900 which was also his wedding date.
"After graduating from Yale in 1900 I immediately went to St. Louis and entered a law office that represented the Traveler's Insurance Company; from time to time the Travelers requested investigation of accidents from this law firm and I was delegated to make the investigations and subsequent adjustments.  In 1903 the Travelers desired to open an adjusting office in Detroit;  apparently my investigating work attracted the attention of Mr. T.U. Lyman, chief claims adjuster of the Travelers.
Mr. Lyman requested me to visit him in Hartford, which I did.  He tendered me the position of adjuster for the company in Detroit, which I accepted.  He also gave me permission to try and defend law suits and I was nominated as the company's attorney.  Such venture was in the nature of an experiment and he remarked that I would either "make or break him," but that he had confidence that I would succeed.  Mr. Lyman really gave me my great opportunity in life and the thought has occurred to me that perhaps in your record book you would like to make some note of this occurence."  [from letter from FLV to IWV, 11-14-1939]
He was about 6 foot 1 inch and Vesta was 5 foot 1 inch.  His ears were the truely LARGE Vandeveer ears, which in early generations were used as a pictorial signiture for Vandeveers who couldn't write.  After retirement, he did much of the housekeeping and enjoyed being active. Vesta preferred sitting and rocking and humming.  She suffered somewhat with asthma and allergies.  Fred was an inveterate practical joker,  frequently bringing me gifts as a child of spring loaded candies, rubbersnakes and fuzzy spiders.  He could be constantly be heard to say, placing his long right leg very firmly foreward,  "Now let me ask you this, ......" whereupon he would embark on a great series of questions into every aspect of what you had been doing, whether it was his business or not. Agrivating, but he really was interested, and cared.  I remember receiving a letter from him a couple of years after my marriage, just after buying our first home.  He told me in no uncertain terms that we were in no way ready to but a home, yet and that we were making a very foolish move!  I suspect that that letter has been thrown away.
Cornelia Vandeveer Beresford  3-21-1993
Taken from "The City of Detroit, MI," Vol III, 1922, p751:
Fred L. Vandeveer, one of the most capable and one of the most popular attorneys of Detroit, was born in Taylorville, IL, January 26, 1879, and is a son of George A. and Clara B.(Edgecomb) Vandeveer.  The ancestral line shows that he comes of Holland Dutch lineage and that the family was founded in New Amsterdam, now New York, at an early period in the colonization of the new world.  George A. Vandeveer was for years the general counsel for the National Surety Company of New York.  Harry D. vandeveer, a brother of Fred L., of this review, is a Yale man of the class of 1902 and acts as western representative of the Fidelity and Deposit Co. of Baltimore, MD, making his home in Los Angeles, CA.
In the acquirement of his education, Fred L.Vandeveer attended Upson University at New Preston, Conn., from which he was graduated with the class of 1897.  This constituted the preparatory course which served as the foundation for his professional knowledge.  He then entered the Yale Law School and gained his LL.B. degree in 1900.  In the same year he opened a law office in St. Louis, MO, where he remained until 1903, and then came to Detroit.  Here he has continued in practice and has become widely knownin professional connections.  For a long period he has been attorney for the Travelers Insurance Co. for the state of MI.  He is now specializing in insurance law and among the companies with which he is connected in a legal capacity are the Ocean Accident and Guaranty Corp. (Beresford)

Vesta Foljambe Hardy

 - D.A.R. #139872.
Vesta was a pioneer kindergarten teacher in New Haven, Conn.,  she was a very pretty young woman and was followed by the Yale boys who didn't have a lot of work to do.  She had 18 proposals of marriage of which she was inordinately proud.  My father came along when she was 25 and by that time if she was going to marry, she had better do it.
He was 5 years younger than she was.  He had graduated in law from Yale.  My mother had a 2 year normal school education. They went to live in St. Louis after they were married and my brother (Leroy) was born there - a seven months baby - in the hottest weather.  The doctor took an old suit case and lined it with hot waterbottles and cotton batton and my mother sewed cotton batton inside his dresses (he weighed 4 pounds at birth). At that period, it was a marvel that he survived.
While in St. Louis, my father had a case against the Traveler's Insurance which he won.  Traveler's said this is the last time you'll beat us like that and they hired him.  This lead to the move to Detroit. Ethelyn Vandeveer O'Sullivan
"To those of our Hardy family, who are interested in their lineage, and those whom it represents. In a lineage book entitled,  "Hardy and Hardie, Past and Present." On page It says (Page 725.   "The statement just previous to that quoted above says "William Hardy as being born at Salem, Mass. and having married Ann Maria Richardson, born at Hollis, New Hampshire, on the fourth of April. 1843.  She was born at Hollis.
"William Hardy was a boston merchant. and a deacon of the Baptist church."
