- Victor Wohllaib's father was Mathias Wohllaib and was born in Kelimentz Wuttenberg Germany in 1842. He came to Union County to begin a farming career in 1869 and met and married Mary Abel the following year. She was the daughter of Carl and Mary Abel and though born in Burlington, Iowa, came to Union County at the age of four in 1852 with her parents by oxen-drawn covered wagon. Her parent's farm was located in Sand Creek Township and it was they who donated land for use of what is known as the Abel Cemetery. Mathias and Mary began their married life in Union Township in a log house on 40 acres. The farm was increased to 320 acres and remained in the Wohllaib name until 1942. Victor was the twelfth of thireen children and was born in 1891. He received his education at the Shepard School with various teachers as Ida Schwantz, Mattie Heine and his sister Rose. He married Blanche Spaulding of Afton, daughter of Albert amd Gertrude Gage Spaulding in 1913. His Uncle Charlie Abel and Bill Hughes built the house on this father's farm. They had four chilren, losing a twin girl soon after birth, but raised Bee G. of Creston, Lee E., whose death came in 1971, and Virginia Sweeney of Afton. Victor remembers helping drive fat hogs to market at the Shepard Station on the railway and they always raised a field of wheat that was taken by wagon to Villisca to be made into flour. Their first car was a 1916 Model "T" Ford. It did a good job pullin in the mud, but neighbors all got togeher and scooped out the snow in the winter. Cold weather was helped by heating bricks or soap stones in the oven of the wood range and wrapped in newspapers at their feet. Virgil, Louie and Jesse Jungst, Henry and Joe Weinkotz and Victor with his brother Joe always went swimming in Twelve Mile on Easter, even if it meant chopping holes in the ice to do it. Victor and Blanche and children lived on their first farm until the death of his father in 1929, then moved to a farm at the westt edge of Afton. It was part of this farm where the Afton Lake was built in 1936. They sold the farm in 1943 and bought a filling station, cabins and trailer park at the east edge of Afton. Victor was a sexton of the Afton Cemetery from 1938 to 1946. In 1961 they sold the buisness and moved into a home in Afton. They are presently living with thir daughter Bee in Creston.
