- Newspaper Article (SCHENECTADY GAZETTE, Schenectady, NY, Monday, November 25, 1963)
GLOVERSVILLE -- A 47-year-old St. Johnsville area hunter was reported in "fair" condition last night at Little Falls Hospital with a bullet wound of the chest and lung caused by an apparent stray shot that struck him while hunting Saturday.
MILBURN MONK of RD, St. Johnsville, was rushed to the hospital by a nephew, Donald Capece, after the accident about 10 a.m. Saturday on Royal Hill, about four miles north of Lassellsville, Town of Ephrath, in Western Fulton county, the county sheriff's office reported.
Monk was hit in the upper right chest with the bullet passing through his lung and lodging in his back. He underwent surgery at the hospital and the bullet was removed. There was no immediate report on the caliber.
According to a report made by his brother, Emmerson Monk of Lassellsville, and an investigation by Deputy Sheriffs Donald Houghton and Alton May, Monk was hunting with a party of nine men when the shooting occurred.
The companions said they heard a shot and Capece said he heard Monk scream and saw him fall down. The stray shot apparently glanced off a rock or tree before hitting the victim, the sheriff's office said. No one in the hunting party had fired a shot, according to the report.
CAPECE carried Monk about one-quarter mile to his truck and then drove him to the main road, where he was placed in a car and taken to the hospital.
