Mohawk Flag Dedication Mapped
  Mohawk - Arrangements are under way for the formal dedication of the flag pole Aug. 5 on the lawn of the home of Crowley-Barnum American Legion Post on W. Main St.
  The pole will be dedicted in honor of Cpl. Ellis Shoemaker, one of the first Mohawk men to make the supreme sacrifice in World War 2. The ceremony will be in charge of Earl K. Palmer, post chaplain.

   MOHAWK - Otis E Shoemaker, 83, 37 Columbia St., who for a number of years had been superintendant of Mohawk Cemetery, died Aug 12, 1940, in Herkimer Memorial Hospital afer a lingering illness.
  Mr Shoemaker was born ion Shoemaker Hill, son of Mr. and Mrs. Alfred Shoemaker. He spent his early years farming in the Town of German Flatts. Before becoming cemetery superintandant, he worked in the Remington typewriter works in Ilion.
  Surviving are his wife, the former Mary G Heath, whom he married about 44 years ago, a brother, Elman, Mohawk and a sister, Mrs. Joseph Burns, Fort Plain. A son Everett J Shoemaker, a World War 2 veteran, died a few years ago in Michigan.

  Frank B. Shoemaker, 40, 1635 Miller, wholesale confectioner, died in a Miami hospital Saturday after a long illness.
  Shoemaker conducted a wholesale candy business at 409 Eagle. He had been in Florida since early last winter.
  He was born near Mohawk, son of Mr and Mrs. Alfred Shoemaker. He lived in that vicinity until about 10 years ago when he came to Utica.
  He married Miss Margaret Brockway about 35 years ago.
  Besides Mrs. Shoemaker, he leaves two daughters, Mrs Ellen F Clark, Pasadena, and Mrs Edward W Lambert, Wilmington; two brothers, Otis and Alfred Shoemaker, Mohawk, a sister, Mrs. Joseph Burns, Fort Plain and four grandchildren.

  Mrs. Burns Dies at 87
  Mrs. Lora Shoemaker Burns, 87, a former resident of Fort Plain, died early this morning at the Canajoharie Nursing Home, where she had been a patient for six months. She was the widow of Joseph Burns.
  Born March 10, 1883 in Mohawk, she was the daughter of Mr. and Mrs. Alfred Shoemaker. She was a member of the Universalis Church of the Messiah in Fort Plain.
  She was married to Mr. Burns in 1906. He died July 2, 1965.
  Survivors include two daughters, Mrs. Peter Edelmeyer of Canajoharie RD and Mrs Kenneth Beck, Fort Plain; three grandchildren and three great-grandchildren.
  Funeral services will be held at 2 p.m. Monday at the Gray Funeral Home, Fort Plain with the Rev. Earl N Engle, pastor of the Universalis Church officiationg. Burial will be made in the Fort Plain Cemetery.

  - Harold J Shoemaker and Thomas F Gray Met Death in Terrific Explosion.
  Harold J Shoemaker of Suracuse, who until last September resided in this citym was one of the men who met death in the terrific explosion and fire at the plant of Semet -Solvay Corporation at Split Rock Tuesday night. Mr Shoemaker's wife is a daughter of Mr. and Mrs Edward Kunkely of 1311 Elm and both were well known in the city.
  Mr Shoemaker was a member of the night shift and also of the plant home company. He lived within sight of the big explosives plant, and Mrs Shoemaker saw the flames sweep buildings and the explosions shook the house. She was fearful for her husband's safety, and when at last message was brought her of his death tha fact that he was among the victims could alone be determined by the signet ring he wore bearing the initials "H.J.S."
 - Mrs Kunkely, mother of Mrs. Shoemaker had arrived at her daughter's home Tuesday morning to pay her a visit. Wednesday afternoon, Mrs Shoemaker and her three-month-old daughter were immediately brought to Utica. The body of the deam man will be buried in this city.
  Mr Shoemaker was 25 years old the day of his death. He was born near Mohawk, the son of Alfred Shoemaker and the late Virginia Griffin. He was a graduate of teh Mohawk High School and a member of the Commercial Travelers Association and Christ Church. Besides his widow and father of Mohawk he leaves two children, Thelma and Richard; three brothers, Otis of Mohawk, Frank of Utica and Elmer of Herkimer, and a sister, Mrs. J.W. Burns of Fort Plain.

  Testimony of Mrs. Lillian Uhle, Herkimer, waa added to the record in the divorce case of Helene Shoemaker against LeRoy Shoemaker, heard last week. Attorney C. J. Wlnslow, Frankfort, for plaintiff, questioned the witness, whose daughter. Ruth Uhle Sanderson, it is alleged, is living with Shoemaker in Pontlac, Mich.
 Obituary (
Mrs. Helene Shoemaker, 19 Clinton Pl., formerly of 15 Kernan Ave., died Saturday, Oct 31, 1942, in Memorial Hospital after a short illness.
  She was born at Cedat Lake, July 26, 1878, daughter of the late William H. and Sarah Sykes Symonds, came to Utica many years ago and had made her hoime in this city since, where she was a member of Plymouth Congregational Church.
  Surviving are one son, John Nelson Shoemaker, now engaged in construction work on froeign soil; one sister, Mrs. George A. Peckham, Richfield Springs; two brothers, Harold D. Symonds, Ocean Grove, N. J., and Charles S. Symonds, Clifton, N. J.; four neices and several nephews.
  The funeral will be held at 2 Monday at the Heintz Funeral Home, 1535 Whitesboro St. with burial at Richfield Springs.

  Richfield Springs — John N. Shoemaker, 44, died unexpectedly Oct 14. 1957, at the Nurses Home of the Brooklyn State Hospital where he resided.
  He was bom In Herkimer on Dec 17, 1912, a son of LeRoy and Helene Symonds Shoemaker. For three years he lived with his aunt, Mrs. George Peckman of this village where he attended the grades at the local high school. Later he was graduated from Utica Free Academy and from Brooklyn State Hospital.
  For many years he did private duty in neuro-psychiatry. During World War II, Mr. Shoemaker served as a civilian nurse in Greenland for two years. After the war he did private duty in California and for several years was located at the Cedars of Lebanon Hospital in Hollywood, Calif. He then came to Utica to live with his cousins, Mr. and Mrs. Herman Nelson of 16 Kernan Ave. which he had since regarded as his home.
  While in Utica he was employed at Broadacres Sanitorium. He later left Utica to do private duty in New York City, eventually returning to Brooklyn State Hospital where he had a staff position and instructorship. Mr. Shoemaker was also studying for his B.S. degree at St. John's University, Brooklyn, at the time of his death.
  He leaves his father of Saginaw, Mich.; his aunt, Mrs. Peckman of Richfield Springs; an uncle, Charles Symonds of Clifton, N. J.; several cousins.
  The funeral will be at 2 Thursday from the McGrath Funeral Home, with the Rev. Daniel T. Hill, rector of St. John's Episcopal Church, officiating. Burial will be in Lakeview Cemetery, Richfield Springs.
