Failing of this city; and a granddaughter, Marlene Falling, who retired 10 years ago from the General Electric, spent 31 years in the turbine department as a machinist and at the time of his retirement was an inspector. He is a member of the General Electric Quarter Centry Club and of New Hope Lodge.

Area Resident Dies at 90 at Nursing Home
NELLISTON - Mrs. Mathilda Wohlgemuth, 90, of East Main Street, died at 11 last night at the Palatine Nursing Home, Palatine Bridge, where she had been a patient since Jan. 29. Born July 4, 1886, in Freybush, the daughter of Nathaniel and Anna Getman Failing, she married Chester W. Wohlgemuth, who died in 1960, on Oct. 4,1905. She had been an area resident all her life. Mrs. Wohlgemuth was a member of St. Paul's Lutheran Church, Fort Plain. She is survived by two daughters, Mrs. Hazel Priest and Mrs. Ann Sherman, both of Nelliston, and four great grandchildren.Monday, June 13, 1977

Chester A. Wohlgemuth. 74, of Nelliston died yesterday in Amsterdam Hospital where he had been a patient five days. He was born March 3, 1885, in the Town of Minden, son of William and Anna Young Wohlgemuth. He operated a trucking business here in partnership with Earl Adams from 1918 to 1953. He was a member of St. Paul's Lutheran Church and the Eagles Lodge of Johnstown. He married Matilda Failing in 1906 in Nelliston. Besides his wife, he leaves two daughters, Mrs. Leland Priest and Mrs. Donald Sherman, both of Nelliston; a sister, Mrs. Earl Adams, Fort Plain RD; a granddaughter; four great grandchildren and a niece and a nephew. The funeral will be at 2 Wednesday from the Gray Funeral Home, the Rev. Richard Rieger officiating. Burial will be in Fort Plain Cemetery in the spring. The Eagles will conduct rites at 8 tomorrow at the funeral home.

Donald C. Sherman, 68, West Main Street, Nelliston, died early Thursday evening at his home following a long illness.
Born October 4, 1909, in Fort Plain, he was a son of Othelbert and Bessie Casler Sherman and lived here until 1955 when he moved to Nelliston. He attended Fort Plain High School and was employed by the Beech-Nut Packing Company and Life Savers, Inc., Canajoharie, for 43 years, retiring in 1971.
During World War II, he served in the U. S. Army Air Force and later with the First Infantry Division in the Philippines.
He was a member of St. Paul's Lutheran Church, Fort Plain. An ardent golfer, he was a charter member of the Canajoharie Country Club.
On Oct. 8, 1938, he was married to Ann Wohlgemuth, who survives, in addition to a brother, Clyde Sherman, Fort Plain, and two nieces.
Funeral services were held Monday morning at 11 o'clock from the Swartz Funeral Home, Inc., Fort Plain, with Dr. Frank Shimer, retired Lutheran pastor, Canajoharie, officiating. Interment with graveside military services were conducted in the Fort Plain Cemetery by the VFW Memorial Squadron of Mohawk Valley Post No. 3275.
Memorial contributions may be made to the Mid-County Ambulance Service, or the Eastern Mohawk Branch, TB-RD Program, 277 State St., Schenectady.

Mrs. L. E. Priest of Watertown, sister of the bride, was attendant. Clyde Sherman, brother of the bridegroom, was best man. Both the bride and bridegroom have been employed at Canajoharie for a number of years. Following a wedding trip through Canada, Mr. and Mrs. Sherman will reside in Fort Plain.

Raymond Meyers Rasbach, North Tonawanda, died yesterday, Sept. 17, 1947, following a heart attack at his home at 367 Tremont St.
Mr. Rasbach long a resident of Herkimer county moved to Tonawanda only a month ago following his retirement from his general mercantile grocery business in Middleville. He was a graduate of Albany Business College and later became a professor there. At one time he was freight accountant for several years.
Besides his wife, Mrs. Bessie Failing Rasbach, he leaves one daughter Marianna, a teacher at Farmingdale L.I., two sons, Ray, Tonawanda and Paul a student at RPI in Troy; one sister Mrs. Nellie Lounsbery, a stepsister Mrs. Clarence Eysaman and his step-mother, Mrs. Grace Rasbach, all of this village.
Funeral services will be conducted at 2 p.m. tomorrow from the Hillard Funeral Home, 147 Delaware Ave., Tonawanda.

One of the prettiest home weddings in this vicinity in some time occured Wednesday evening at eh home of Mr. and Mrs. Norman Failing when the marriage of their daughter Bessie to Raymond M. Rasbach of Herkimer took place. The house was profusely decorated with palms, ferns, cedar, white lilacs and other cut flowers and presented a beautiful appearanre. About 6.30 the guests began to arrive and were received by Miss Ethel Failing, sister of the bride, and Miss Nettie Richards of Herkimer. The ushers were Messrs Elmer Failing, brother of the bride. Earl Smith, Lloyd Kast, Lyman Lasher and Everett Crist. The ceremony was performed under an arch of white lilacs with cedar as a background and in the center of which was suspended a white bell with a smaller bell on either side. The ring ceremony was used according to the ritual of the First Methodist Episcopal Chhrch. Rev. S. D. Robinson of Herkimer officiated. Promptly at 8 o'clock Miss Vera M. Rasbach. sister of the groom began to play the Bridal Chorus from Lohengrin and the bridal party descended the stairway. The first to descend were the Misss Hazel and Ruth Crill, nieces of the groom, who acted as flower girls and strewed roses in the path of the bride. They were followed bv the bride and groom and the maid, Miss Edna Finch, of St. Johnsville. and A. U. Failing, brother of the bride, who acted as best man. The bridal party passed into the parlor in the northwest corner of the house where underneath an arch of whit lilacs the ceremony was performed in the presence of about seventy-five friends and relatives of the happy
couple. The bride wore a dress of white silk mull, trimmed with Irish point lace and a bridal veil surmounted with a wreath of lillies of the valley. She carried a bouquet of white brides roses. The maid was gowned in a dress of white dotted mull and carried white carnations. The groom's gift to the bride was a beautiful gold bracelet set with pearls and to his best man a solid gold stick pin made in the shape of a wish bone and set with pearls. The bride presented the maid with a handsome brooch pin. The bride is a most charming young lady who has a host of friends who wish her much happiness upon the sea of matrimony. The groom is a popular young man and a graduate of the Herkimer High School, 1902. and also of the Albany Business College. He now holds a lucrative position with the New York Central Railroad at the Herkimer freight house. The presents included many beautiful pieces of furniture, money, silverware, cut glass, china and bric-a-brac. After the ceremony a beautiful wedding supper was served after which the happy couple left in an automobile amid a shower of rice to meet the train for an extended trip including New York, Albany, and the Jamestown Exposition. Upon their return they will reside at 447 N. Prospect street. Herkimer and will be at home to their friends after July 15th.

FORT PLAIN — Funeral services for Mrs. Ethel Failing Roof, 62, widow of Leo C. Roof, who died Tuesday morning at the home of her sister, Mrs. John Petrie, Herkimer, were held today at the Gray funeral home. The Rev. James Alcock, pastor of the Universalist Church of the Messiah, officiated. Interment was made in Fort Plain Cemetery.
She was born Feb. 19, 1894 in the Town of Minden, the daughter of Norman D. and Anna Getman Failing, and for many years had resided on Prospect Hill.
Mrs. Roof was a member of the Universalist Church and of the Mohawk Valley Temple, Pythian Sisters, Fort Plain.
Survivors include a son, Richard. Fairfield, Conn.; two sisters, Mrs. Petrie and Mrs. Chester Wohlgemuth, Nelliston: three brothers, Byron Failing and A. Failing, Schenectady, and Daniel, Herkimer, three grandchildren and several nieces and a nephews.

He was in partnership with his brother, Lester, conducting a feed and farm machinery business here until his healt forced him to retire a few years ago. Before that time he was a farmer.
Surviving are his wife, Ethel Failing Roof, Fort Plain; a son, Richard Roof, Fairfield Conn; three grandchildren; a brother;, Lester Roof, Fort Plain.
The funeral will be at 2 Saturday from the Gray Funeral Home, with the Rev. James Alcock, pastor of the Univeralist Church, officiationg. Burial will be in the Fort Pllain Cemetery in the spring.

At the hom e of Mr. and Mrs. Norman Failing in Herkimer, at noon yesterday took place the marriage of their daughter, Miss Ethel Failing, to Leo C. Roof of this village. The ceremony was with ring and was performed by Rev. Herbert Frank Moulton, D. D. pastor of the Umversalist church of this village. The wedding march was beautifully rendered by Miss Clara Belle Van Alstyne of Nelliston. Those in attendance were immediate friends and relatives. The bride was prettily attired in blue taffeta silk and carried a bouqwuet of with roses. Miss Marion Failing, sister of the bride, was the bridesmaid and she was attired in light blue poplin and carried a bouquet of pink roses. the best man was John Petrie of Herkimer. the home was porettily decorated for the event with cut flowers and ferns, the color scheme being green and white.
Following the ceremony Wlmer and Daniel Failing, brothers of the bride ushered guests to the dining room where a turkey dinner was served. After the dinner Mr. and Mrs. Roof left for an extneded western honeymoon which will be spent in Niagara Falls and places in Canada. Upon their return they will make their home on Prospect hill in this village, where the bridgroom will erect a new house. They will be at home to their friends after Nov. 1. Both Mr. and Mrs. Roof will have the best wishes of a large circle of friends in this village and Herkimer. He is the son of Mr. and Mrs Byron Roof and a native of Fort Plain.

Marilyn “Maril” (Failing) Gadzik, age 77, of Avon, passed away on April 28, 2014. She was predeceased by her husband, Walter Gadzik, her parents Daniel and Marion Failing, and her sister,JeanFellows. She was born and raised on a farm in Herkimer, NY and remained a farm girl at heart the rest of her life. Maril leaves behind two sons and their spouses: David and Susan Longfritz, of Stowe, VT; and Eric and Jeanine Longfritz ofSimsbury. She was loved and admired by her grandchildren, Allie, Annie, Andrew and Julie Longfritz. She also leaves her brother Larry Failing, his wife Joan and many nieces and nephews. Maril was a school teacher in Avon for 31 years touching the lives of thousands of students in the Roaring Brook,Towpath and Pine Grove elementary schools. She was always an athlete from her days as the pitcher on the State College of Oneonta softball team, to the Avon Bowling league and, most recently, the Avon Senior Center shuffleboard and Wii bowling eams. Maril whistled every day of her life, loved the Cape, and paced her family room for every UCONN men’s and women’s basketball game. She loved playing cards with her friends and volunteering her time at the West Avon Congregational Church and the Avon Senior Center. Visiting hours will be held at the Carmon Funeral Home & Family Center, 301 Country Club Road, Avon, Friday May 9, 2014, from 6:00 to 8:00 pm. The funeral service will be held at 11:00 am on Saturday, May 10, 2014 at the West Avon Congregational Church, 280 Country Club Road, Avon. ST. JOHNSVILLE - John J. Christman, 44, who resided at the Central Hotel, died Friday morning, shortly after being admitted to Little Falls Hospital. Mr. Christman had - been in ill health for some years, although he was able to continue work.
He was born in St. Johnsvllle on May 4, 1911, a son of William Christman and Mrs. Nancy Christman Smith.
He had resided here his entire life, and for the past four years had been employed in Cap's Cigar Store. Prior to that he was employed for a while by the Town of St. Johnsville.
He was a member of the St. Johnsville Rod and Gun club.

FORT PLAIN - Mrs. Laura Getman Dunckel, aged 41 years died at her home in the Freys Bush sectioon of this town Wednesday morning after a few days illness. Mrs. Cunckel was born in this town and had spent most of her life here. She was a member of the Pythian Sisters of this village and the Freys Bush Grange, The survivors are her husband, Reuben Dunckel and one son of Freys Bush, he rmother Mrs. Hattie Getman of Canajoharie; two sisters, Mrs. Homer Nestle of Freys Bush and Miss Getman of Canajoharie. The funeral of George M. Hess was held Saturday afternoon at 2 o'clock from the Freysbush Methodist church, Rev. E. J. Cummings officiating. Mr. Hess was 27 years of ange and died Thursday at a hospital in Utica. The remians were brought from that city on Friday by Undertaker Thurwood of this village. Besides his widow, the deceased is surbived by two sons, Edward and Mahlon, both of Freysbush; his parents, Mr. and Mrs. James Hess, and a sister, Mrs. Gillette of Lodi.

MRS. HOMER NESTLE OF FORT PLAIN — Mrs. Mabel Nestle, 75, of RD 3, wife of Homer Nestle, died Thursday in St. Mary's Hospital, Amsterdam, She was born in Palatine, daughter of Edward and Harriett Peeler Getman. She was married to Mr. Nestle in 1910. She was employed here by the Luxuray Division of Helmont Mills for several years. She was a member of the Fort Plain Methodist Church and the Fort Plain Chapter DAR. She was a 50 year member and past chief of Mohawk Valley Lodge No. 2, Pythian Sisters of Fort Plain, and served as Pythian Sisters deputy in 1952 and 1953. Besides her husband she leaves two sons, Kenneth and Victor Nestle, Canajoharie. The funeral will be at 1:30 Monday from the Swartz Funeral Home. Burial will be in Fort Plain Cemetery.

Mr. and Mrs. Homer Nestle, Freysbush, celebrated their 50th wedding anniversary at an open house arranged by their children at the Nestle home yesterday afternoon and evening.
Homer Nestle and former Mabel Getman were married Nov. 23, 1910, in the Freysbush Methodist Church by the late Rev. E. J. Cummings, pastor of that church and the Methodist Church in Fort Plain.
Following his marriage, Mr. Nestle was employed in the Stemple and Smith Grocery store, fort Plain, and also as a car and cattle salesman before taking up farming as his life's work.
He operated the farm in the Freysbush section for many years before his retirement last June when he turned over its management to his grandson, Victor Nestle, Jr.
Mr. and Mrs. Nestle are the parents of two sons, Victor Nestle, Sr., Perth, and Kenneth Nestle, Canajoharie. They also have five grandchildren.
Mr. Nestle is a member of the Mohawk Valley Lodge, Knights of Pythias, while his wife is a past district deputhy chief of the Pythian Sisters, and a past chief of Mohawk Valley Temple, Pythian Sisters. She is also a member of Fprt Plain Chapter, NSDAR.
During the open house yesterday, the couple received a purse of money, gifts and flowers from the many friends, neighbors and relatives who visited their home to extend congratulations. A buffet luncheon was served throughtou the afternoon and evening.

Louis Getman, 55, Utica, died suddenly Thursday, February 21, in his home at 1111 Miller street, that city. He was apparently in good health at noon, but when his son, William, returned at 7 o’clock Thursday night he found his father dead in bed. Death was attributed to a heart attack.
Mr. Getman was bom in Nelliston on June 3, 1896, son of Lewis and Louise Waite Getman. He had been a painting contractor in Utica, but retired two years ago because of ill health. He was a World War 1 veteran.
He leaves his wife, in Utica; a daughter, Mrs. Hurley McDougall, and a son, William, in Utica; two sisters, Mrs. Mae Oeser, Fort Plain, and Mrs. Maude Linter, this village; and a brother, Chester Getman, this village.

Mrs. Louise M. Brooks Getman, 72, of 204 Newell St., died Sunday, June 14, 1981 at St Luke's Memorial Hospital. She was born in Oriskany Falls, the daughter of William and Edna Ferry Brooks in Utica, she was married to Louis Getman. Mr. Getman died in 1952. Mrs. Brooks was employed as a waitress in several area restaurants. She had also been employed by the Shendoah Rayon Company. Mrs. Brooks was an Episcopal. She is survived by one daughter, Mrs. Beverly McDougall of Utica; one son, William Getman of Utica; two brothers. Edward C. Brooks of New Hartford and Clifford Brooks of North Carolina There is one granddaughter and one great grandson. The funeral will be Wednesday afternoon at 1:30 at the Heintz Funeral Home, 1817 Whitesboro St., with services conducted by the Rev. Lawrence C Butler. Interment will be in Sunset Hill Cemetery. Mrs. Ella May Oeser, 56, widow of Solomon Oeser, died April 17, 1956, at the home of her daughter, Mrs. William Geweye, 10 Wagner Street, after a long illness.
She was born March 4, 1900, in the town of Palatine, daughter of Lewis and Louise Waite Getman. Mrs. Oeser was a member of Fort Plain Unit 554 American Legion.
Survivors include four daughters, Mrs. Willis Geweye and Mrs. Harold Harbster, both of Fort Plain, Mrs. Edward Bush, Ithaca; Mrs. Lewis Franklin, Schenectady; a son, Robert Oeser, Fort Plain; 12 grandchildren; two sisters, Mrs. Charles Linter and Mrs. Chester Getman, both of St. Johnsville. nieces and nephews.
Funeral services will be held Friday at 2 p.m. at the Gray Funeral House with the Rev. Albert T. Strobel, pastor of Fort Plain Methodist Church, officiating. Interment will be made in the Fort Plain Cemetery.

Fort Plain - Child's Fall Into Pan of Hot Water Proved Fatal - Fort Plain, Dec. 13 - Harold Oeser, the two and one~half year old son of Mr. and Mrs. Solomon Oeser, of this village, died at the Child's Hospital in Albany, where her was taken several days ago for treatment. The boy died as the result of injuries received some tome ago. He was playing about the home and his mother was working about the kitchen. She set a pan of hot water on the floor and the youngster fell in it. Before the mother could rescue him, he was burned so badly that flesh fell from his body in places. Last Rites Held For Pfc. Oeser ~ Fort Plain ~ Funeral services for Pfc. Donald H. Oeser, 21, who was killed in action in Italy, were held yesterday afternoon from the Gray Funeral Home; Willett Street, with the Rev. Albert T. Strobel, pastor of the First Methodist Church, officiating. Burial was in the Fort Plain Cemetery. The body arrived by train in Fort Plain Tuesday from the Graves Distribution Center, Schenectady. Veterans escorted the body from the station to the funeral home, where a guard of honor was maintained. Business places were closed during the service. A firing squad fired volleys at the grave and taps were sounded. Note: Donald was the son of Solomon Oeser and Ella May Getman.

St. Johnsville Man Stricken While Mowing
ST. JOHNSVILLE—Chester L. Getman, 11 Monroe St., St. Johnsville, died suddenly Friday afternoon at his home while mowing the lawn. He had been under treatment for some time for a heart condition and Dr. Bernard Feldstein, who was summoned to the home, attributed the instantaneous death to a heart attack. Mr. Getman was using a power mower at the time he was stricken. Born July 4, 1902, in Nelliston, he would have been 63 on Sunday. He was a son of Lewis and Louisa Wade Getman and had been a lifelong resident of St. Johnsville. Formerly employed by the New York Central Railroad, he was, later caretaker and chauffeur for Mrs. Mabel Fowler in the village for some years until he retired due to ill health. He had also been superintendent of the St. Johnsville cemetery. He was a veteran of World War 1 and a member of Morris J. Edwards Post 168, American Legion. Survivors are his wife, the former Mary Evans; a daughter. Mrs. Glen Mereness; and three grandchildren, all of St. Johnsville. Services will be held Monday morning at 11 o'clock at the Smith Funeral Home, the Rev. Bertram A. Walton, acting pastor of Grace Congregational Christian Church, officiating. Interment will be in the St. Johnsville cemetery.

Mrs. Elsie Mae Getman, 31, wife of Chester Getman, local Girl Scout leader, succumbed at 5 o'clock Thursday afternoon in tne Little Falls hospital to an illness of several months. She was stricken early in June and since that has been confined continuously in Little Falls and Swart Hill hospitals. Young and energetic, Mrs. Getman fought valiantly for restoration to health but. it was a losing battle.
She was born on April 16, 1905 in Dolgeville, a daughter of Ray and Elizabeth Van Allen. She attended Dolgeville high school and when she was a sophomore in that institution the family moved to this village. Here on October 2, 1923 she was married to Chester Getman.
For some time prior to her illness Mrs. Getman was employed in the local plant of the Little Falls Felt Shoe company where her services were valued. She was a member of St. Paul's Lutheran church and also of the choir, assisted in the Sunday School and was active in all church work. When a Girl Scout organisation was effected here a little over a year ago, Mrs. Getman became the leader of troop 8 to which she devoted much time, until her health failed her.
There survive the husband; her parents who now reside in Salt Springville; six sisters, Mrs. George Byers, Freys Bush; Mrs. Richard Hagadorn, East Springfield; Mrs. Leo Haas, Dolgeville; Mrs. George Howard, Cherry Valley and the Misses Betty Jean and Naomi Van Allen who reside with their parents in Salt Springville; two brothers Ray Van Allen of Dolgeville and Robert Van Allen, Salt Springville; her step grandfather, John P. Disch, Dolgeville.
Funeral services were held from the home at 2 o'clock Sunday from the home on Church street and at 2:30 from St. Paul's Lutheran church. The j Reformed church officiated at the house and Rev. George H. Kling officated at the church. Interment was made in Wert St. Johnsville cemetery. The Girl Scouts of troop 8 of which Mrs. Getman was leader attended the buneral in a body.

Young, 57, a former Wllliamsvllle tavern operator who died Wednesday in the Belleville, Ont., Hospital from injuries he suffered when attacked by a bull. Burial will be in Willlamsvllle Cemetery.
Mr. Young, who operated a hunting lodge and farm at Harlow, Ont., was attacked by the bull on his own farm and rescued by neighbors. He had been living in Canada since disposing. of his tavern at Main and South Long Sts., Willlamsvllle, several years ago. He once operated a garage in Willlamsvllle.
Mr. Young is survived by his wife, Ethel C.; three daughters, Mrs. Roy Gray, 62 Pfohl Pi., Willlamsvllle; Mrs. John Riley, 265 Highland Drive, Willlamsvllle, and Mrs. Robert J. Elss of Osprey, Fla., and six grandchildren.
