Randy P. Swartz, 10-year-old son of Mr. and Mrs. Strayer G. Swartz of 304 Main Street, Fort Plain, was found dead, about 2 this morning of an injury received when he apparently fell or was thrown from a horse, according to Fort Plain Police Chief Raymond Montal.
Dr. Raymond E. Wytrwal of St. Johnsville, a Montgomery County coroner, said death was accidental and due to a fractured skull.
Chief Montal said the boy went across the street from his home sometime between 5 and 7 last night to an enclosure, where two horses are kept. The horses are owned by his father.
The chief said the family didn't immediately become concerned when the boy did not come back soon, believing he may have gone to a drive-in movie with neighbors, but became alarmed later because of his continued absence and called Fort Plain police at 12:50 this morning.
Officer Bruce Failing joined the boy's father and Larry Swartz, a brother of the victim, in a search. The search led to the enclosure, where the body of the boy was found, according to Montal.
Montal said the boy evidently had attempted to ride one of the horses bareback, as he had done oftern before and was thrown or fell from the horse. Neither of the horses had been saddled, the police chief said.
The Swartz boy was born at Little Falls, June 7, 1955, the son of Strayer G. and Pauline Haley Swartz.
He was a fifth grade pupil at the Fort Plain Central School. Surviving besides the parents at home; three brothers, Grayson, in the Marine Corps at Parris Island, S. C, and Larry and Adam Swartz, at home; his grandmother, Mrs. Eva Haley of Danville, Va., and aunts, uncles, and cousins.
