18807. Kenneth John Wood

 - GFG # B 1266 / A

 - Newspaer Article (The Leader-Herald, Gloversville - Johnstown, NY, Wednesday, May 29, 1968)
  A Man Remembers
His day will be filled with memories this Memorial Day and perhaps you shut-in folks might like to share his thoughts. He is Kenneth J. Wood of Ephratah. Kenneth is a native of that community, he is active in political work and in the Masonic Lodge. Currently he serves as high priest of Hiram Union Chapter F. and A. M. and also is active in other Masonic orders. Kenneth, who is not married, is a retired tree surgeon. From 1941 to 1946 he served as a surgical technician with the Army in this country and received his honorable discharge in January 1946. In 1942 he was injured in the Mohabi Desert in California while in the line of duty. He was compelled to undergo surgery in an army hospital in El Paso, Texas where he was confined as a patient for about six months. Because of this, he was not permitted to serve overseas but was placed on limited service. Later, he was sent to Colorado to serve as a corpsman with the 314th Medical Training Battalion. From there, he went to the Surgical Technical School in the Springfield, Mo. General Hospital. After he was graduated, he was placed in charge of the surgical section of the Italian Prisoner of War Hospital in Scotts Bluff, Neb. Later, the army returned him to a hospital in Camp Carson, Colorado Springs, where he worked in surgery and remained there until his discharge.
Trouble dogged Kenneth after his return to civilian life. In 1953 he fell while working from a 20-foot truck mounted ladder and presently is disabled. He had broken his back in that fall and smashed some of the discs in his back. He was taken to a hospital and was compelled to undergo surgery. It was necessary for Kenneth to remain in a special bed for more than six months and mornings he has no feelings whatsoever in his legs. Because of this severe injury, he was compelled to retire from his work as a tree surgeon. He often suffers considerable pain in his back and is unable to do any heavy work or lifting. He assists his parents, Mr. and Mrs. Harold K. Wood, with light chores on their 300-acre dairy farm. Kenneth, however, maintains a cheerful and philosophical attitude despite his problems and he always tries to "look on the bright side of life." He has many hobbies which include photography. He was graduated from the Germaine School of Photography in New York City and had planned to specialize in horse photography, but his injuries curtailed that plan. His other hobbies include stamp collecting and the collection of pipes. He presently has about several hundred stamps and about half a hundred pipes. They include a Turkish water pipe and a French reading pipe. And tomorrow, Memorial Day, there will be a time of retrospection for Kenneth. There will be memories of those army days and Kenneth, as always, will say a silent prayer for the buddies who just didnt make it home.

Charlie was married to Hannah Smedley (Hillen) Saltsman, known to all as "Hanako", who was born 6 Jun 1932 in Tokyo, Japan and died 3 June 1986 in Middletown, CT. They were married in the Syracuse University Chapel on 23 July 1955. Charlie worked for most of his career at Raymond Engineering, rising to VP of Ordnance (they made timers and fuses for artillery shells and missiles). Hanako eventually got her Masters in Education and became a Special Education teacher. Some time after Hanako died, Charlie married Patricia Ayers (Chase) Myers (born 29 Nov 1937) on 23 Oct 1999 in Old Lyme, CT.
(Charles M Saltsman III)

 - Obituary (Find A Grave)
Charlie was born to Charles Marsdon SALTSMAN (b. 2/24/1890 in Johnstown, NY) and Antoinette Whittier Webber SALTSMAN (b. 10/20/1892) in Searsport, ME) and had one older sister, Natalie Antoinette Saltsman WHEATSTONE (b. 1/23/1922 in Waterbury, CT).
When Charlie was 4 years old, his family moved to Syracuse, NY and later to Skaneateles, NY, where he grew up, attended school, developed many hobbies and learned to sail with his first boat, a Canadian International 14.
Leaving High School at the end of his sophomore year, Charlie attended, and graduated from Phillips Academy, Andover, MA in 1948. He graduated four years later – in 1952 – from MIT with a BS in Naval Architecture and Marine Engineering. His senior thesis, “The Application of Fiberglass Laminates to Ship Structures” was one of the first articles to propose use of this now almost universal material for boat construction. While at MIT Charlie was also a member of the student government, president of his fraternity, editor of the college technical magazine, and managed to make Dean’s list.
Following graduation were five years working with Bethlehem Steel Company, then the world’s largest shipbuilder, in Quincy, MA. During this time, he worked on the last U.S. built passenger liners, the world’s largest oil tankers, and the first nuclear powered vessels. And, in 1955, he married Hannah Smedley Hillen SALTSMAN in Syracuse, NY.
In 1956 Charlie and Hannah (Hanako) moved to Middletown CT with a new position as an engineer in a small technical innovation company – Raymond Engineering. For the following thirty-five years Charlie worked on state-of-the-art design and manufacture of precision electro-mechanical products for industry, space and the defense industries, and retired as Vice President in 1992. Charlie and Hanako raised three sons – Charles III (Chip, b. 1958), Peter (b. 1960) and Tom (b. 1962). In 1986, Hanako died of breast cancer at the age of 54, greatly mourned by her 4 “boys.”
Charlie retired from Raymond Engineering in 1992 and moved to Old Lyme, CT to concentrate on boating, woodworking, sculpture, and painting (among a number of other hobbies and avocations). In 1999, he married Patricia Ayers Chase SALTSMAN, a longtime family friend.
Charlie died of a fast-growing lung cancer at home on December 11, 2005. Nearly 600 people filled the Old Lyme Congregational Church to standing-room only during his memorial service.

Hannah Smedley Hillen

 - Obituary (Find A Grave)
Hanako was the eldest of two daughters born to William George HILLEN (b. 1901, Louisville, KY) and Elizabeth Boyer Powers HILLEN (b. 1908, Ardmore, PA). Her sister was Elizabeth Mercer Hillen HUNT, born 1936 in Tokyo). She was known as Hanako, which means “little flower” in Japanese.
Hanako’s father was the far Eastern representative of Carrier Corporation Air Conditioning; at the outbreak of the Second World War, in 1940, when Hanako was eight years old, her family was forced to return to the U.S., settling in Syracuse, NY, the location of Carrier headquarters. Growing up in Syracuse, Hanako remembered feeling herself something of an outsider due to the strong anti-everything-Japanese feeling of the times.
Hanako graduated from the George School in 1950, and from Syracuse University in 1954. Her lengthy degree was “Bachelor of Science, School of Education specializing in Family Living and Child Development.” Immensely popular, her list of college and sorority (Alpha Phi) activities was equally lengthy.
Following graduation, Hanako began her teaching career in a Tenafly, NJ kindergarten. She later taught in Brookline, MA, and in the Connecticut towns of Glastonbury, Middletown, and Durham. She received her M.S. in Education from Central Connecticut State College in 1975, finally retiring as a Special Education teacher.
In 1955, she married Charles Marsdon SALTSMAN, Jr., in Syracuse, NY. They lived in Quincy, MA for a year before settling in Middletown, CT. Here they raised three children, all boys: Charles Marsdon SALTSMAN, III (b. 1958), Peter Webber SALTSMAN (b. 1960), and Thomas Gable SALTSMAN (b. 1962).
Hanako was ever cheerfully busy, homemaking—which she considered her primary role, child rearing, teaching and community involvement. She was a member of the Middletown Board of Health, numerous school associations, and choral groups. She was interested in almost everything, and kept countless lists of everyone’s activities. And she collected shells, bells, rocks, leaves, flowers and every scrap of her children’s school papers.
Hanako was deeply and ecumenically religious. Born an Episcopalian, and schooled in a Friends non-denominational environment, she felt most at home as a Unitarian, with a profound belief in the goodness of all, and in the beauty of nature.
Diagnosed with breast cancer in 1980, Hanako underwent a series of major surgeries and treatments for and extended time without ever losing her cheerful outlook and enthusiasm. She died in 1986, two days before her 54th birthday and a week after her last cruise on the family sailboat.

Marriage Notes for Franklin Josephus Bowman and Paula Van Orden

 - 50th Anniversary (Herals Statesman, Yonkers, NY, Thursday, July 18, 1963)
The 50th wedding anniversary of Mr. and Mrs. Franklin J. Bowman was celebrated the other day at their home, 266 Madison Road, Scarsdale. Mrs. Bowman is the former Miss
Paula Van Orden.
Helping to celebrate were the couple's three children, Miss Elizabeth Bowman of Scarsdale, Paul F. Bowman and his wife, of Ridgewood N.J. and Mrs. Robert Peake, the former Miss Charlotte Bowman, and her husband, of Jefferson, N.Y.
The Bowmans, who have lived at the above address since 1920, can recall the early village of Scarsdale when there was no mail delivery, waste collection or gas.
Mr. Bowman, who retired as undersheriff of Westchester in 1960 is an American history buff whose ancestry in this country predates the Revolution. He claims a total of 15,000 relatives with whom he corresponds by mimeographing his letters. He also sends out copies of the "Getmart News" a periodical with information on the family history—a topic on which he is now engaged in writing a book.
Mr. Bowman is a descendant of the Palatines, residents of the hine Valley who were driven from their homes by King Louis XIV of France because they had given shelter to the Huguenots. They fled to England, and then to America in 1710, and 3,000 of them, the largest immigrating group before the Revolution, arrived in this country in 10 boats. Among them was Peter Zenger.
Mrs: Bowman's family dates back to the early Dutch occupation when her ancestor Claes Van Naarden owned a home and conducted business in New York City.
Her father fought in the Civil War and was captured and sent to the notorious Andersonville Prison. Of the more than 30 men in his detachment who suffered the same fate, only three returned alive, he being one of them.
Mr. Bowman had been associated with the sheriff's office since 1935 and was chairman of the Town Republican Committee in Scarsdale for 10 years.
