The death of James I. Trask, operator of a cigar store in South Main street, this city, which occurred yesterday brought sorrow to a wide circle of friends throughout the Mohawk Valley where he had been active in business and Masonry for years. Concerning his death, The Little Falls Time s last night had the following article:
LITTLE FALLS This city lost one of its best known business men yestenday, when James I. Trask, 60, succumbed at his home, 26 Burwell street. Death came at 2:45 A. M.
Stricken while at his Summer home on Canada Lake, five months ago Mr. Trask was taken to Mary Imogene Bassett hospital at Cooperstown. He was anxious to be back in his own home, however, and he returned to this city. Although confined to his residence, Mr. Trask was able to direct the operations of his extensive business until very recently. Two weeks ago he suffered a stroke, from which he never recovered.
Mr. Trask's rise in the field of business was like, that of a Horatio Alger hero. Like so many other men who attain success in later life, he once was a newspaper delivery boy. He enjoyed such success in his business career that at the time of his death he was at the head of one of the largest retail and wholesale candy and tobacco businesses in Central New York.
James I Trask was born in Little Falls, October 3, 1841, the son of Ira and Louise Nau Trask. His father and uncle conducted an ice shop for many years at the site of the present Central New York Power corporation offices, having transierred the business here from the village of Poland. He also was associatd with his father in the ice business, here, for some time.
Thirty-four years ago he entered lac retail cigar store business when he purcnased the store on Main street from his brother, Albert Trask. The original store is still flourishing on tee same spot, and the business has been expanded by the openmg of other stores in Utica, Gloversville and Amsterdam.
Later he entered the wholesale business, buying out a Utica company and this is now the Little Falls Wholesale company, which supplies dealers throughout this section with candy and tobacco.
Mr. Trask was fond of travel, and with Mrs. Trask had been around the world, his descriptions of these travels, and the mementoes which he brought back with him, were of considerable interest. Mr. Trask found relaxation at his Summer home at Canada Lake and had spent every Summer there for many years, commuting nearly every day to his business here
He was a member of all the Masonic bodies the local Masonic lodge, the Commandery, Knights Templar, Mohawk Valley Consistory, Eiyara temple of the Shrine of Utica, and in addition was a 32nd degree Mason. He was keenly interested in the work done by the Shrine hospitals for crippled children.
Mr. Trask married twice. His first wife was Miss. Bessie Churchill of St. Johnsville, who died about 17 years ago on September 13, 1929, he married Miss Frances Heron, Utica, who survives. He also leaves three children. Ford and James of this city, and Miss Roselind Trask, New York; a half sister, Miss Annie Ferguson, Burwell street; two brothers, Albert of this city, and Charles of Albany, and three grandchildren.
Deceased was a member of Emmanuel Episcopal church of this city Rev. Howard Kennedy, rector of that rhurch, will officiate at the funeral, which will be held from the home Sunday, at the convenience of the family.
