- When I was a kid my family made several visits to my grandmother Anna (BOSTWICK) SALTSMAN at 175 East Stae Street in Johnstown. There was an old lady who lived just down the street at 173 East State St. She was called "Aunt Eva" because she was my father's aunt. She and my grandmother both had pure white hair and they both always had very large gardens in the land behind their back yard. This land was often a swamp back in those days (1960s). My mother told me that my father grew up with "Aunt Eva's" two daughters and they treated him like he was their brother even though they were actually cousins.
My grandmother used to make a type of food that she absolutely loved, but everybody else I know of hated it. She would go out into her lawn and gather up dandelions (including the leaves, flowers, and stems of the flowers), then fry them slightly. Then she would add vinegar and oil, fried bacon, and crumbled hard-boiled eggs. Then she would eat it. As I said, she loved it. She used to rave about how great it was. But I don't know of anybody else who liked it. I tried it once, but I didn't like it. But then, I was a kid raised on sugar so I might actually be more open to trying this again now that I am an adult. [January 27, 2008]
