 - Newspaper Article (the Morning Herald, Gloversville and Johnstown, Wednesday, June 27, 1945)
Pvt. Lewis Merrill, 24, of the U. S. Army, was killed in action April 28 while battling the Japanese on Okinawa, according to a telegram his parents, Mr. and Mrs. Myron J. Merrill. 109 South Judson street, received yesterday from the War Department. Pvt. Merrill was a veteran member of Company M, 106th Regiment. 27th Division, and had been in the service since 1940. His father is a veteran of World War No. 1 and only recently received his honorable discharge as a member of the Sea-bees.
The telegram, which was forwarded by the Adjutant General J.  A. Ulio reads: "The Secretary of War desires me to express his deep regret over the loss of your son, Pvt. Lewis Merrill, who was killed in action against the Japanese on Okinawa on April 28."
The story of the supreme sacrifice made by Pvt. Merrill is similar to that of many other American men, who have driven the Japanese back to their own doorstep. Pvt. Merrill enlisted in Company M in August, 1940, long before this country was seriously threatened.
Along with other members of the outfit he took his oath in the Gloversville armory early in October, 1940, before the company prepared to take the field for one year's special training. On October 22 he was with the unit as it left for Fort McClellan, Anniston, Ala. After the attack of the Japs on Pearl Harbor he moved with the outfit to the Pacific Coast and remained on active duty there for some months. Then he moved along with the company to the Hawaiian Islands, where the men received further training, particularly in jungle warfare. He was training under the late Sgt. Sam Passero.
Pvt. Merrill with his buddies were on hand when the 27th Division went into real action for the first time in the Marshall and Gilbert Islands. He came through the engagement unscathed. Later he took part in the invasion of Saipan. Again he escaped unharmed, although a number of his buddies were either killed or wounded.
When the 27th Division plunged ashore on the beaches of Okinawa he was again on hand. The Army was battling for possession of the southern end of the island at the time he was killed in action.
Pvt. Merrill was born In Johnstown on March 1920, and spent the early art of his life there. He was graduated from the Gloversville High school with the class of 1939. He worked at various jobs until he went into the Army in October 1940. Pvt. Merrill and his father, who served with the Seabees in the Pacific, endeavored to see each other, but as their duties were in different parts of the war theatre, they were unable to get together.
Besides his parents the survivors are four sisters, Marion, Elizabeth, Ruth and Joan, and one brother Pvt. Robert Merrill who is serving with the U. S. Army.
The conquest of Okinawa has cost the lives of two Fulton County men to date while several others were wounded.

Marriage Notes for Elizabeth Wormuth and Philmore G Getman

 - Wedding Announvrment (Fulton County republican, Johnstown, NY, Thursday, December 28, 1893
On the evening of December 21st, occurred one of the pleasantest events that has attracted our attention for a long time. It was the marriage of Mr. Filmore Getman, of Stone Arabia, to Miss Libby Wormouth, of Johnstown, Miss Bertha V. Getman. of Tribes Hill, acting as Maid of Honor. There were guests to the number of about seventy five present to witness the ceremony. Rev. JL. D. Van Arnam of the M. E. church of Ephratah was present and tied the knot. Mrs. Norman Getman officiated at the piano playing the wedding march for the occasion. A great deal of credit is due Mr. and Mrs. Norman Getman, of Stone Arabia, for the royal manner in which they entertained the guests of the newly married couple, the event taking place at their home. The spread was to say the least, immense, the tables fairly groaning under their loads of the many palate tempting courses, the more substantial as well as the many delicacies of which were prepared by the hands of Mrs. Norman Getman herself and for which she long ago became noted, as many who have had the pressure of enjoying her hospitality in the past can testify. Very soon after the wedding repast came the sounds of music, and the tripping of the light fantastic being next in order, the company enjoying themselves in this way until none who were present were aware of the nearness of the approach of another day, so quickly did the time pass; and when it became apparent that it was time to say good bye it was with a sigh of regret that the night had not been longer. The writer's best wishes go with the happy couple for their future happiness and prosperity. Below we give the list of some of the presents:
  W. F. Getman, fine young horse; Mrs. W. F. Getman, a bed complete: Anson Getman, pair rose blankets; Richard Getman and wife Albert and Betsy Getman, an extension table; Snell brothers, mantle clock; Mr. and Mrs. Joseph Nellis, rocker; Charles Fikes and sister, ceitr (sic) stand; George L. Meyers, M D. and wife silver butter dish and knife; Mr. and Mrs. Charles E.
