Elgie Saltsman. 63, died Monday morning at his home on Sand Hill, just outside of Fort Plain on Route 5S, following a long illness.
He was born in the Town of Palatine. December 26, 1884, a son of Webster and Minnie Saltsman. He had been a lifelong resident of this section and for a number of years was substitute rural mail carrier at the Fort Plain post office. Later he was an employe of the Beech-Nut Packing Company, Canajoharie. He was a member of the Fort Plain Reformed church and the church board and the Masonic Lodge.
The survivors are his wife, the former Flora Moyer; one daughter, Mrs. Arthur Swartz, one granddaughter, all of Fort Plain: one sister, Mrs. George Stretmoyer, Nelliston, and one brother. Roy Saltsman, Utica.
Funeral services were held Wednesday afternoon at 2 at the Swartz funeral home, with the Rev. Chester Chilton of the Reformed church officiating. The body was placed in the Catherine Nellis Memorial chapel vault in Fort Plain cemetery to await burial there in the spring.

Mrs. Flora M. Saltsman 81, widow of Elgie Saltsman, 93 Cliff street, Canajoharie, died early Saturday morning in the Palatine Nursing Home where she had been a patient for the past three months.
She had been in ill health for the past nine months. Born January 19, 1885, in the Dutchtown section of the Town of Minden, she was a daughter of J. Wesley and Anna C. Moyer and was a lifetime resident of this area. On September 29, 1910, she was married to Mr. Saltsman who died Feb. 9, 1948. She had resided in Nelliston for 20 years prior to moving to Canajoharie about a year ago.
A member of the Fort Plain Reformed Church, she was also a member of the Silver Lining Guild and the Missionary Society of the church. She was a member of the Fort Plain Chapter, NSDAR, and the Minden Home Demonstration unit.
Survivors include one daughter, Mrs. James Hubschmitt, Canajoharie RD 1; a sister, Mrs. Mary Nellis, Canajoharie; seven grandchildren, one great grandchild and several nieces and nephews.
Funeral services were held Monday afternoon at 2 o'clock at the Swartz Funeral Home. Fort Plain, with the Rev. H. T. Hilbrands of the Fort Plain Reformed Church, officiating. Interment was made in Fort Plain Cemetery.

Ruth Anna Hubschmitt ofNeiiiston, N.Y. Mrs. Ruth Anna Hubschmitt, 78, of Phillips Ave., Canajoharie, N.Y., died September 10, 2005 at her daughter's home surrounded by her family following a brief illness. She was born in Little Falls, N.Y., on January 13, 1927, adopted at 10 weeks old by Elgie Saltsman and Flora Moyer Saltsman. Ruth graduated as salutatorian of her class from Fort Plain High School. Ruth retired from the Daniel Green Company in Dolgeville, previously working at Little Falls Footwear. Prior to that, she was the owner of the former Hub's Tavern in Nelliston for many years. Ruth was a sponsor of "Children through Christian Services". She enjoyed crocheting sweaters for the Guide Post. She loved driving around the country to visit her children and spending time with her grandchildren. She loved animals, watching NASCAR races, music, and enjoyed playing the violin and piano. Ruth was of the Lutheran faith. She was predeceased by her first husband, Arthur Charles Swartz. She is survived by six daughters, Linda J. and her husband David Woods, North Chilli, N.Y., Gail and her husband David Loring, Nelliston, N.Y., Karen Swartz, Aiken, S.C., Kathie and her husband Scott Vest, Hurst, Tex., Cindy and her husband Steve Lamkins, Rich Hill, Mo., Mary Hubschmitt and Renee Spear, Binghamton, N.Y.; one son, James and his wife Wendy Hubschmitt II, Rosehill, N.C; and seventeen grandchildren and fifteen great-grandchildren.
Graveside services will be held at 9 a.m. on Thursday, September 15, 2005 at the Fort Plain Cemetery with Rev. Kenneth Dingman officiating. The family will receive friends and relatives from 4 to 7 p.m. Tuesday, September 13 at Gray-Houghtaling & Smith Funeral Home, 34 Center St., Fort Plain, N.Y. Roy S. Saltsman, 89, of 1617 Oneida street, Utica, died Feb 14 following a long illness in St. Elizabeth’s Hospital.
He was born in Fort Plain July 5,1887, the son of Minnie G. and Webster Saltsman.
Prior to his retirement, he was employed as a towerman by the New York Central Railroad for 38 years.
He was married to the former Emma Flander, who survives, in addition to a daughter, Ila Saltsman, Utica; a sister, Ina Stretmoyer, and a niece, Ruth Ann Hubschmitt, both of Nelliston.
The funeral was held at the Surridge and Roberts Memorial Home, Utica, Feb. 17, with the Rev. P. Arthur Brindisi, officiating. Interment will be made in the spring in Crown Hill Memorial Park, Kirkland.

Mrs. Emma C. Kling, 81, West Grand Street, Palatine Bridge, died yesterday afternoon (Monday in St. Mary's Hospital in Amsterdam following a lengthy illness.
She was bom in the Town of Palatine on Feb. 22. 1903, the daughter of William and Ada Mowrey Saltsman, Kling, a lifelong resident of the area and a member of the Canajoharie Reformed Church, formerly worked for Luxuray. Inc. as a seamstress Her husband, Morris Kling, died in January 1959.
Survivors include three daughters: Mrs. Charles Reynolds, Little Falls; Betty Kling, Palatine Bridge; Mrs. Robert McFee, Nelliston.
Also surviving Kling are two grandchildren, three great-grandchildren, nieces, nephews and cousins.
Services will be held at 11 a.m. on Thursday at the Lenz Funeral Home in Canajoharie. The Rev. Donald Baird, pastor of the Canajoharie Reformed Church, will preside over the ceremony.
Calling hours at the funeral home are Wednesday from 2 to 4 p.m. and 7 to 9 p.m.
Memorial contributions may be made to the Mid County Ambulance Corps.
Burial will be at the Ames Cemetery.

Alton (Tiger) Saltsman, 68, of 28 E. Main St., Nelliston, died Christmas Eve at his home following a long illness He had returned home on Wednesday following two weeks’ hospitalization.
Born June 29, 1915, in the Town of Palatine, he was a son of the late William J. and Ada Mowrey Saltsman and was a lifetime resident of that township, having resided in Nelliston since 1930 He was employed for many years as a machinist at Beech-Nut Inc., Canajoharie. retiring due to ill health in 1972.
Mr Saltsman was a member of the Palatine Lutheran Church.
On Aug 3, 1940, he was married to Marion Swartz Vickerson, who died Feb 14, 1967.
He is survived by two daughters. Mrs Robert (Betty) Jones, Canajoharie RD 1, and Mrs. Lewis (Barbara) Dannible, St. Johnsville; two stepsons, Charles Vickerson, RD 2, Fort Plain, and Bruce Vickerson, Cherry Valley; a sister, Mrs. Emma Kling, Palatine Bridge; eight grandchildren, three great-grandchildren; and several nieces, nephews and cousins.
Funeral services were held Tuesday morning at the Swartz Funeral Home Inc., 34 Center St., Fort Plain, with the Rev. Theodore Hammer, pastor of the Palatine Lutheran Church, officiating. Calling hours were scheduled at the funeral home Monday. Burial will be in Fort Plain Cemetery at a later date. Memorial contributions may be made to the Mid-County Volunteer Ambulance Service

NELLISTON — Mrs. Marion Saltsman, 47, wife of Alton Saltsman of 28 E. Main St., died Feb. 14 in Mary Imogene Bassett Hospital, Cooperstown.
She was born in the Town of St. Johnsville, daughter of Charles and Minnie Radley Swartz. She was first married to Elmer B. Vickerson. He died in 1938. She was married to Alton Saltsman in 1940. She was a member of the Palatine Lutheran Church.
Besides her husband, she leaves two sons, Charles and Bruce Vickerson, both of Nelliston; her mother, two daughters, Mrs. Betty Jones, Canajoharie RD, and Mrs. Barbara Dannible of St. Johnsville; a brother, Bernard Swartz of Ontario, Calif., and five sisters, Mrs. Carol Chapman, St. Johnsville RD; Mrs. Ruth Byrne, Albany; Mrs. Evelyn Hayes, Canajoharie RD and Mrs. Shirley Przestrzelski and Mrs. Janet Muehlbeck, both of Fort Plain RD.
The funeral will be at 10 Saturday from the Swartz Funeral , Faor Plain, with the Rev. Theodore Hamme, vice pastor, Palatine Lutheran Church, officiating. Burial will be in Fort Plain Cemetery.

A very pretty wedding took place at the farm home of Mr. and Mrs. Charles Swartz. Route 5S, in the Town of Minden on Saturday at 2 p. m.. when their daughter, Mrs. Marion Swartz Vickerson became the bride of Alton Saltsman, son of Mr. and Mrs. William J. Saltsman of Nelliston. The ceremony was performed by the Rev. Stanley Haverly of Stone Arabia. The house was decorate in pink, white and blue.
The bride was gowned in white silk and net and wore a corsage of white daisies and red roses. The bride was attended by her sister, Mrs. Ruth Leitt. as matron of honor. Mrs. Leitt. wore a gown of blue silk and net. The bridesmaid was Miss Irene Trangucci. who was gowned in peach silk. Both young women wore corsage bouquets of daisies and red roses.
Harrison Saltsman. brother of the bridegroom, was best man. Roy Leitt, brother-in-law of the bride served as usher.
Mrs. Swartz. mother of the bride, was attired in dutsy rose silk and lace. The bridegroom's mother wore blue chiffon Both mothers wore corsages.
A wedding reception was held at 4 p.m. at the home of ther bride's parents to over 60 relatives and friends. Guests were present from Amsterdam, St Johnsville, Canajoharie, Van Hornesville, Stone Arabia and Fort Plain.
After the reception, the bridal party motored to Allen's Inn. Canada Lake, where supper was served. Mr. Saltsman is employed by the American Pipe Line Construction Co., Little Falls. Mrs. Saltsman has a position in the Little Falls Dress Shop.
The newlyweds are enjoying several days at Otsego lake. Upon their return they will reside with the bridegroom's parents in Nelliston.

The bride wore a gown of white crepe de chine and carried white roses and pink sweet peas. She was attended by her sister, Miss Alice Kelsey, who was gowned in Pink dotted swiss and carried pink sweet peas and tea roses. Edwin Hiser attended the groom.

The altar of Parkside Lutheran Church was banked with white gladioli and greenery, flanked by cathedral candles in wrought-iron candelabra, for the wedding this afternoon at 2 o'clock of Miss Betty Virginia Bassford, daughter of Mrs. Benjamin W. Bassford Jr., and Mr. Robert Ralph Heighling, son of Mr. and Mrs. Ralph W. Heighling. White gladioli marked the pews. The Rev. Claudius E. Jensen, pastor of Ascension Lutheran Church, officiated.
The bride's uncle, Mr. Charles D. Minor of Morgantown, W. Va., gave her in marriage. Of white satin, her gown was fashioned with a fitted bodice, long pointed sleeves, bateau neckline with a yoke of marquisette and a full skirt with a peacock-spread train. Her veil of ivory-white illusion fell from a tiara of satin and she carried a cascade of white glamellias.
Miss June 0. Shaw, maid of honor, chose a gown of olive-green velveteen, fashioned Empire style with a round neck, high waisted, slim skirt and a bustle. A cluster of ostrich-feather tips matching the color of the gown was in her coiffure and she carried rust-color glamellias. The other bridal attendants, Miss Betty A. Jenzen and Mrs. Arpad J. Toth, had costumes like that of the maid of honor in reddish-rust color and their bouquets were of yellow glamellias.
The best man was Mr. William Filter of Milwaukee and the ushers were the Messrs. John N. Cottis, John W. Hartmayer, John R. Patterson and Richard C. Speidel. The bride's mother chose a long-sleeved toast-color crepe gown made with a bertha edged in bronze beading, a matching hat, black accessories and a yellow glamellia corsage bouquet.
A long-sleeved Continental-green crepe gown made with a draped skirt was worn by the bridegroom's mother with a matching hat, bronze accessories and a yellow glamellia corsage bouquet. A reception was given in the Park Lane where the white bridal cake adorned the table with two white floral pieces and candelabra.
For motoring to Washington the bride chose a gray tailored suit, matching hat, brown alligator accessories and an orchid. The couple will be at home at 2156 Main St. Sept. 20. Services are being held today (Thursday) at 1:30 p.m. in the W.L. Froehley Funeral Home on Lake Street for Mrs. Alice K. Wightman of Gowanda State Road, a member of an old Hamburg family, who died April 16 in her 80th year.
The Rev. Edwin Sprague, associate minister of Hamburg Presbyterian Church, will officiate with burial in Lakeside Memorial Park.
Mrs. Wightman was a member of Arcana Chapter, No. 146, Order of the Eastern Star, North Collins.
The former Alice K. Kelsey, Mrs. Wightman is survived by her husband Walter D. Wightman, a retired executive of the old Peoples Bank of Hamburg, the Bank of North Collins and Liberty National Bank and Trust Company.
Other survivors are two sons, Graham D. and David L.Wightman; two sisters, Helen Howe and Eva Black of Alfred; a brother, William D. Kelsey Jr. of Big Bear Lake, Calif, and four grandchildren.

Services were held last Tuesday in the W.L. Froehley Funeral Home on Lake Street for a prominent south towns banker, civic and community leader for over half a century, Walter D. Wightman of Hamburg who died October 13 in his 85th year.
The Rev. Edwin Sprague. associate minister of Hamburg Presbyterian Church, officiated with burial in Lakeside Memorial Park.
The son of an Eden native and Hamburg High School graduate, Mr. Wightman was prominent in banking in the Hamburg-North Collins area for over 50 years until his retirement in 1966 as senior executive vice president of Liberty National Bank. Prior to that time he had served in the same capacities with both the Peoples Bank of Hamburg and the Bank of North Collins, and was instrumental in their merger with Liberty.
He remained as a member of the Advisory Board of Liberty Bank's Hamburg office until 1974 and served on the board of directors of the old First Federal Savings and Loan Association now Anchor Bank until 1974.
A graduate of the Rutgers University Graduate School of Banking and the Graduate School of Banking for Agriculture at Cornell University, Mr. Wightman was a past chairman of the ErieNiagara Counties Bankers Association.
Prominent in civic affairs, Mr. Wightman was a charter member and past president of the Eden-North Collins Rotary Club and prided himself on 42 years of perfect attendance. He was also an honorary member of the Hamburg Rotary Club.
Two scholarships have been established in perpetuity in his name by the Hamburg and the Eden North Collins Rotary Clubs.
A 32nd degree Mason, Mr. Wightman was a 62 year member of Fraternal Lodge No. 625. F & A M here, a 50 year member of Hamburg Grange and a former member of the Hamburg Elks Lodge.
He also served as a director and treasurer of the Erie County Extension Service and treasurer of the Erie County Power Squadron.
In the charity field. Mr. Wightman was area chairman of the Community Chest Red Feather campaigns and was treasurer of the North Collins Branch, American Red Cross. His Savings Bond campaigns in the agricultural south towns region during World War II became a model for similar areas of the state and nation.
A southtowns native. Mr. Wightman was born Sept. 12, 1900 in the Town of Eden, the son of Orson Wightman, a prominent Langford farmer and Peace Justice for 40 years and Mary Roesser Wightman.
The husband of the late Alice Kelsey, Mr. Wightman is survived by two sons, Graham D. Wightman of Corning and David L. Wightman of Hingham. Mass., and four grandchildren.

Mr. and Mrs. Walter D. Wightman of Pierce Ave,, Hamburg, celebrated their 50th wedding anniversary on September 18 at a family dinner hosted by their children at the Mansard Inn in Orchard Park.
On the following day a reception for the family was held at their home at which their 50 years together were remembered with the help of photographs and taped phone conversations with old and dear friends.
Walter D. Wightman of Hamburg and the former Alice S. Kelsey of Buffalo were married September 18, 1926 at the Lafayette Avenue Universalist Church in Buffalo.
Mr. Wightman retired in 1966 as Senior Executive Vice President of the Liberty National Bank of Buffalo and Manager of the Hamburg and North Collins Branches. He is currently serving on the Board of Directors of the First Federal Savings and Loan Association of Hamburg and will shortly celebrate his 60th year of close association with the financial affairs of the Southtowns area.
He is treasurer of the Hamburg Power Squadron, a charter member of the Eden/North Collins Rotary Club and a member of the Hamburg Elks.
The reception was hosted by the families of their two sons, Graham D. Wightman, his wife Delores and two children of Corning, NY and David R. Wightman, his wife Nora and two children of Naperville, Ill. Among those celebrating with the honored couple were Mrs. Helen Howe, Mrs. Eva Black and Mrs. Katherine Heighling, sisters of Mrs. Wightman.

Couple Marry in Corning Church The First Presbyterian Church, Corning, was the scene of the marriage of Miss Dolores Anne Croft to Graham Davis Wightman.
The Rev. Woodrow W. Witmer performed the double ring ceremony Saturday, Feb. 29. Mrs. Leroy Wilson was organist and Dale Watkins was vocalist.
The bride is the only daughter of Mr. and Mrs. Osman E. Croft of Addison. Her husband is the son of Mr. and Mrs. Walter D. Wightman of Hamburg.
Escorted by her father, the former Miss Croft wore a floor-length sheath gown of white silk organza over taffeta with alencon lace appliques. It featured a scoop neckline, long sleeves and a detachable chapel train accented at the waistline by a front bow. Her elbow-length veil of silk French illusion was secured by an organza petal leaf crown and she carried a cascade bouquet of white chrysanthemums and Ivy.
Miss Louise Kugler was maid of honor: Bridesmaids were Miss Phyllis Rockovits and Miss Catherine Scott. All are of Corning.
George E. Southwell of North Tonawanda was best man and ushers were David Wightman of Boston, brother of the bridegroom; Robert Wood of North Tonawanda, Dr. Edward Bush, Ian D. Chapman and R. Neal Taylor, all of Corning.
Following a reception at the Baron Steuben, the couple left for a wedding trip to the Mont Tremblant Lodge Club, Mont Tremblant, Quebec.
Mrs. Wightman is a graduate of Addison Central School and the State Agricultural and Technical Institute at Alfred. She is employed as a representative of the New York Telephone Co. in Corning.
Her husband is a graduate of Buffalo University and Rensselaer Polytechnic Institute. He is a senior product engineer in the television sales department of Corning Glass Works.
Upon their return, the newlyweds will make their home at 190 State St. Corning.

From the 1930s through the 1940s, he worked as a mail carrier in Hamburg. In the 1950s, he and his wife owned and operated the Hamburg Food Market at 226 Lake Street. In 1959, he moved to California and became a manager for Kelly Services.

James H. Cunningham, a graduate of Union college in the class of 1905, died yesterday morning at his home in Glendale, Calif., after a long illness.
He was born in this city. He was an instructor at Union college for several years, and was with the General Electric Co. in Los Angeles prior to his illness. He left Schenectady in 1912.
Resides his wife, Mrs. Anna Cunningham, and two daughters, he leaves one sister, Mrs. Clifford Van Dyke of Albany, and a brother Leonard Cunningham of Philadelphia.
