 - Obituary (The Weekly Recorder, Fayetteville, NY,  Thursday, March 14, 1889)
At the end of a long, active and useful life Conrad Oxner entered very suddenly in, his long rest on Wednesday last. He had just finished the duties of the day and seated himself by the fireside to enjoy the early evening feast, when the Death Angel came and called him. So sudden was his call, that the smile which lighted up his face as he was talking with his wife remained after his spirit had flown. The call was sudden but he was ready. How can one mourn a death so peaceful! Life's work all done now, now rest! Blessed rest forevermore in the presence of his Lord! Earthly friends may miss him, but there is nothing of terror in the thought of the last hour. He "walked with God and he was not, for God took him."
Conrad Oxner was born of German parents (Johannes Oxner & Gertrude Orendorf) in the year 1810. Most of his life was passed in Herkimer County, the place of his birth. In 1831, he was united in marriage with Hannah Loomis of Columbia N.Y. Three children were born to them, two of whom are now living. Dr. I. H. Oxner, of Rome, N. Y. and Mrs. M. W. Belshaw, of San Francisco, Cal. A son, Delos C. died at the age of 18, while a student at McGrawville College.
In early life Mr. Oxner united with the Reformed Church at Columbia and was a generous supporter of and faithful worker in the church of his adoption. In 1862 he moved to Fayetteville, where he at once identified himself with the Presbyterian Church and was subsequently called to the office of Elder, which office he held at the time of his death. His first wife dying, he was, in 1870, united in marriage with Harriet E. Marsh, of Jamesville, who survives him. Mr. Oxner was a man of great energy and perseverance, qualities which he carried into the everyday affairs of life. What he undertook to do, he rarely failed to accomplish, and everything he did was well done, even up to the last moment of his life. His energy and business capacity enabled him to acquire a modest competence. He was liberal in his support of churches, schools and all enterprises calculated to advance the moral or material interests of the community where he lived, and his counsel and aid for any worthy object were never sought in vain. He lived a quiet and unobtrusive life, going little into society, but winning the confidence and esteem of all. He will be greatly missed, especially by his brethren in the church with which he has been so long connected and for whose spiritual and material interests he was always solicitous.
