 - Obituary (Find A Grave /  Richfield Springs Mercury, Thursday Jan. 11, 1923)
Ilion - Roy J. Getman, respected and well known resident and World War veteran died Sunday morning at an Ilion hospital.
The deceased was born in Columbia March 25, 1891, but had been a resident of Ilion for 21 years.
On October 19, 1914, he enlisted in Company M at Mohawk and participated in the guard duty performed by the company until its mustering into Federal service in 1917 with the deceased being a sergeant. After training at Spartanburg, S. C, he sailed for France with Company M of the One Hundred and Seventh Infantry on May 10, 1918. While in France and Belgium he participated in several minor engagements and three major ones, namely, the East Poperinghe line on July 9 to August 20, the Dickebusch sector, August 21 to 30, and at the memorable drive against the Hindenburg line in the vicinity of Bony on September 29, 1918.
It was in this last engagement that Serg. Getman received many severe shrapnel wounds and was heavily gassed and from which he apparently recovered, but the insidious in roads of the gas ultimately caused his death.
Segt. Getman was in charge of the detachment of Co. M men that returned to Mohawk in April of 1919. He was a member of Crim-Shaffer Post, American Legion, Co. M Veterans Association and the K.O.T.M.
The survivors are his mother, Mrs. Everette Getman and two brothers, Lloyd and Ray of Syracuse.

 - Newspaper Article (Malone Evening Telegram, NY, Tuesday, June 15, 1926)
UT1CA, June 14, -A search, instituted yesterday throughout the cities and villages of northern New York for the kidnapers of the three Getman children, Robert. 7; Ora, 5; and Mildred, 3, who were forcibly taken from their grandmother's home near Little Falls Friday night today extended to Vermont. State troopers armed with a warrant for the arrest of Gertrude Getman, mother of the children whom the grandmother. Mrs. McGill charges with engineering the kidnaping, today are scouring the large cities of Vermont in the home of apprehending her. Mrs. Getman is said to be a snake charmer in the employ of the Walter Main circus and it is believed she intends to join the circus today at Rutland, Vermont.
According to the description of the kidnaping given police and state troopers by Mrs. McGill, who is legal custodian of the children, the children were playing in front of the farmhouse when, two cars drove up to the place. At the time Mr. McGill, her husband was in the barn some distance away.
Hearing the children scream Mrs. McGill ran toward them and noticed two men, one with drawn revolver and the other with an instrument resembling a blackjack, and the woman whom she asserts she recognized as the mother, Gertrude Getman.
When she ran towards them, according to her story, the man with the revolver pointed it directly at her and threatened to shoot her if she made any outcry.
The youngsters, frightened and screaming were forcibly placed in the car.
About this time Mr. McGill happened on the scene and gave chase to the fleeing kidnappers but his auto ran out of gasoline. He walked to the nearest farmhouse and notified Little Falls, police. Motor vehicle inspectors hurrying to the scene as well as state troopers gave chase but to no avail as the kidnapers had obtained too good a start on their pursuers. Throughout the entire night police patrolled the roads between Little Falls and Albany but were unable to catch sight of the fugitives.
According to the police investigating the kidnaping the Getmans have been in the midst of domestic difficulty for a considerable time. A year ago the grandmother, Mrs. McGill made an effort to legally adopt the children but her plans were frustrated by the mother. On January 7 of this year she once more made an attempt to adopt them but this effort also failed, although Judge Brush of Herkimer, appointed her their legal custodian.
It is the theory of the police strengthened by the grandmother's information that Mrs. Getman left the circus which played just prior to the kidnapping in Herkimer, and with the assistance of the two men engineered the kidnapping and is planning to rejoin the circus today at Rutland, Vermont. The detectives are focusing all their attention on that city today.
Mrs. McGill today exhibited scratches and bruises on her arms, caused, she said, when one of the kidnappers thrust her aside as she attempted to frustrate their plans and pointing a revolver at her told her to "keep quiet"

WILLIAM J. GETMAN-Superintendent and general manager of the Plaza Mills of Middleburg, Snyder County, Pennsylvania, William J. Getman, of Middleburg,
Pennsylvania, is widely known throughout Pennsylvania and New Jersey as an executive of the silk textile industry. He is one of the outstanding citizens of his community,
devoting himself generously to public office, as well as working earnestly for the betterment of living conditions in the city.
William J. Getman was born on November 7, I887, in Herkimer County, New York, the son of Walter and Amelia (Ashley) Getman. Walter Getman, who was born at Mohawk, New York, served in the Union Army as a boy, enlisting in a volunteer New York infantry regiment and serving throughout the Civil War. Upon his return home, he established himself as a farmer, a calling which he followed for many years and in which he retained his interest until his death in 1935. His wife, Amelia (Ashley) Getman, who was a native of New York, passed away in 1925.
After obtaining his academic education in the public schools of New York, William J. Getman found employment in the textile industry, thus beginning a career which, through the present time, has already continued for forty-two years. He was associated for years with various plants in such textile cities as Paterson, New Jersey, until 1932, when he came to Middleburg, Pennsylvania, as the superintendent of the mills owned by B. C. David. Several years later the mills were closed but Mr. Getman, in association with the late James Thompson and Harry Ritter, raised the sum of twenty thousand dollars and reopened the mills, which have continued in operation through the present with Mr. Getman as superintendent and general manager. Now known as the Plaza Mills, they are owned by Philip Weiss, of New York City, and are engaged in silk throwing, employing approximately one hundred and forty persons on the average. The mills were originally established in 1914 by F. Q. Hartman. Serving his community as a member of the Middleburg Borough Council, Mr. Getman, who is a member of the Episcopal Church and belongs to the Middleburg Kiwanis Club and local bodies of the Masonic fraternity, also serves as the chairman of the Middleburg Playground Committee and for years has devoted himself
ardently for the betterment of living conditions in the city.
William J. Getman married, in 1909, Tillie Seagrist, who is a native Pennsylvanian. Mr. and Mrs. Getman have become the parents of a son, William J., Jr., who was born on December 31, 1912,, and is at present a member of the United States Army, holding the rank of Sergant in the Anti-Aircraft Artillery Brigade.

 - Obituary (Richfield Springs Mercury, New York, Thursday, Feburary 24, 1927)
Despondency resulting from poor health, resulted in David Shaul, 62 years old, of Herkimer, taking a quantity of carbolic acid, with suicidal intent. He was found unconscious and was taken to the Herkimer hospital, where restorative measures were administered by Dr. Graves, but without beneficial result, and his death occurred a short time later. Acting as coroner, Dr. Graves rendered an opinion that Mr. Shaul died by his own hand, as an outcome of being despondent over impaired health.
During most of his life the deceased was a farmer, but retired and went to Herkimer 20 years ago from the town of German Flatts. He leaves his wife, two sons, Earl Shaul of Herkimer and John of Frankfort: two daughters, Mrs. Adelia Updyke of Utica and Mrs. Ray Coonradt of Syracuse; and two sisters, Mrs. Catherine Smith of Syracuse, and Mrs. Ira Stroup of Columbia Center.
The funeral was held at 2 o'clock Saturday afternoon from the home of Earl Shaul. Rev. C. E. Nichols of the Baptist Church officiating and burial was made in Oak Hill cemetery.
