Grindstone Kills Columbia Man – David Getman Meet Instant Death from Flying Pieces of Stone – Another Injured
David Getman, 57 years old, of Getman's Corners, met instant death Saturday afternoon, July 23rd, when a grindstone he was using broke, and the pieces of stone struck him tearing out the eye and then ripping off a part of the skull. The accident occurred on the Fillmore Getman farm, south of Mohawk, on the Mohawk-Richfield Springs road. Mr. Getman and Henry Myers, a 27 year-old neighbor, were engaged in sharpening some mowing machine knives, using for the purpose an old grindstone that had been on the farm for some time. A gasoline engine furnished the power, and the stone was being rotated at high speed. Suddenly, due to the centrifugal force, the stone broke into four pieces. One struck Mr. Getman who stood directly behind the stone. Mr. Myers, who was standing on one side of the fast revolving stone, holding a belt that was transmitting the power for the engine, was struck on the right arm with a large piece of stone, and his arm was badly lacerated and the ligaments torn. He was hurled to the ground, but quickly recovered himself and ran to his mother's home and asked her to summon a doctor. She called Doctor Brown of Columbia. The latter notified Coroner Graves of Herkimer, who had Mr. Getman's body taken to Graves undertaking parlors in Mohawk, where Dr. Neuendorf and McDonald performed an autopsy, finding death due to a fractured skull. The two other pieces of the grindstone were hurled in opposite directions, at least, a hundred feet. David Getman was an only son. His mother died some years ago, and besides his father, a sister, Mrs. Louis Firman, of the town of Richfield, survives. He was educated in this district school of Dennison's Corners and in the Mohawk High School. For twelve years, he was associated with the late William H. Switzer in developing the iron mines at Salisbury. He was also employed at one time in the Horrock's desk factory at Herkimer. The funeral was held at 2 p.m. Tuesday, Reverend Mr. Ridgeway of the Cederville Union Church officiating. Interment in Mohawk Cemetery.
