- According to testimony provided by Lucy Jane Caples Carpenter in the Civil War pension documents of her son, Loren Caples, William Caples abandoned his family when her "... youngest son, Leroy, was 8 years old (1861) and he then deserted his family and me and he went to Columbia, Herkimer Co. this State [N.Y. ] to his brother's visiting and then came back to West Monroe and staid [sic] a while [and then?] went visiting back and forth among his relatives. I was living at Mallory where he moved me to. We had been living at Mallory for 1 year and West Monroe for 10 years before that. Since then he has never done anything towards my support. and refused to buy a pair of shoes for Leroy when he asked him to." When asked what excuse he made for leaving you, she replied, "Nothing only because I wouldn't support him by my labor."

- According to census and death records, Lucy Jane Lower was born in Madison or Herkimer County, New York about 1818. In her effort to qualify for a Pension through Loren Caples' service in the Civil War, Lucy testified that she and William Caples were married in the Town of Hastings, Oswego County, New York in 1834. She would have been about 16 years old. It appears they may have traveled back to Herkimer County for a time (for work?, family support?), as census records indicate that most of her children were born in Herkimer County. At that time, travel between Oswego County and Herkimer County in the Mohawk Valley was likely made over the Oswego Canal, which connected to the Erie Canal in downtown Syracuse. The Erie Canal, which opened in 1825, with side canals completed by 1836, was a driving force in the growth of industry, jobs, and people in the region.
They moved to Oswego County around 1850, just before, while, or soon after Lucy was pregnant with Lovina. They lived in West Monroe, Oswego County, New York for 10 years before moving to Mallory, Oswego County, New York. William abandoned the family one year later in 1861. She remained in Mallory until 1876, living near John Fidler. She subsisted as a seamstress.
The 1865 U.S. census for the Town of Hastings, First Election District, starting at line 31, page 29, lists the following information for Lucy J. Caple [sic], whose household was the 200th in the order of visitation, frame house, valued at $200: Lucy J. Caple [sic], 47, F, Mother, County of birth: Madison, bore 7 children, married once, is now married; Sylvester Fidler, 29, M, Father, County of birth: Oswego, one child, married once, is now married, Occupation: Cooper, native voter; Lovina Fidler, 16, F, Mother, County of birth: Oswego, one child, married once, is now married; Jane Fidler, 1 5/12, F, Child, County of birth: Oswego; Linda Caples, 6, F, G Child, County of birth: Oswego; Lorin Caples, 3 3/12, M, G Child, County of birth: Oswego
The grandchild, Loren, living with Lucy in 1865 is the child of her son, Lester. It is not currently known whether Linda might also be his child or that of his sibling.
According to Lucy J. Carpenter's November 18, 1882 affidavit, "... the names ages and relationship of all the members of her family in 1864 were as follows her mother Elizabeth A. J.[?] Lower aged then 70[?] years her Daughter Lovina aged then 14 years her Son Leroy aged then 10 years and the Soldier Loren Caples aged 24."
[Source: Loren Caples, complete Pension Application file, No. 270 990, (Washington: National Archives)].
Lucy was about 64 years old when she married William Carpenter on February 11, 1882 by by D. D. Owen, Pastor of Central Square Baptist Church in West Monroe. He died in 1886. Little is currently known about that relationship. She later encountered great difficulty obtaining pension benefits through her son, Loren Caples' service in the Civil war, largely because when he died on August 10, 1876, he left a living widow, Diantha Ostrander Caples Ingison, from whom he never divorced. In addition to her dire condition of poverty, Lucy Carpenter invited criminal charges of fraud for seeking these benefits. It is not yet known what became of Lucy after the final rejection in 1890.
