 - Newspaper Article (partial) (The Evening Telegram, Herkimer-Ilion, NY, Friday, April 9, 1954)
... a group or men, including Merle Jones and Fay Davis, rushed to the scene to offer possible aid. Jones and Davis, members of the Cedarville department, said they could see Mrs. Pett on the floor in a bedroom on the south side of the house. But they could not reach her. Her body was recovered two hours later after the flames had died down.
Howard Pett, a rural mail carrier at the Ilion post office, said his parents were apparently taking a nap when the fire started. He said there was no furnace fire at the time, but he believed there might have been a wood fire in the kitchen stove. Bottled gas was used at the home for cooking purposes, he said.
Despite his advanced age, the elder Mr. Pett repeatedly tried to re-enter the flaming structure in an effort to reach his wife, but was restrained. He was not injured.
Firemen secured water from Steel Creek, nearby, pumping it with their equipment. But so far had the fire advanced, the combined equipment of the three departments was futile. Only smoking ruins were left when the body of Mrs. Pett was recovered and removed to the Applegate Funeral Home where Dr. C. C. Whittemore, county coroner, rendered a verdict of death due to accidental burning.
The Petts had occupied the home for the past 14 years. An outbuilding at the rear was not destroyed.
State Trooper John Petacchi of the East Herkimer substation was at the scene to assist and to investigate the death.
Mrs. Pett was born May 2, 1872, in the Town of Columbia, a daughter of Mr. and Mrs. Carmy Skinner. She was married to Howard Pett, March 9, 1898 in Mohawk and had lived most of her life in this area.
Mrs. Pett was a member of the Methodist Church at Columbia Center.
Surviving, besides her husband, are a daughter, Miss Lillian Pett, Ilion; two sons, Harold, Ilion RD and Irving, Spinnervilie; a sister, Mrs. Jennie Bell, West Winfield; two brothers, Devere Skinner, Richfield Springs, and Grover Skinner, Gowanda; several grand children, nieces and nephews.
