  Fatally burned when her clothing came in contact with a wood fire while she was preparing breakfast in the kitchen of her home, Mrs. Mary Dern, 79, of West Caytga Street, Moravia, was taken to Auburn City Hospital at 8:30 Sunday morning in the Wade ambulance, and died shortly before 12, noon, on Sunday. Mrs. Dern occupied half of a double house.
  Hearing Mrs. Dern screaming, Mrs. Seward Greenway and the latter's mother. Mrs. Frank Adams, who reside in the other half of the house, hastened to Mrs. Dern's assistance. They found the elderly woman frantically fighting flames that had iIgnited her dress. Her clothing was almost entirely burned from her body.
  Mrs. Greenway and Mrs. Adams extinguished the flames and called Dr. H. E. Anthony who directed that Mrs. Dern be taken to the Auburn hospital. Fire that had communicated to the floor and wall casing of the kitchen was quickly subdued.
  Mrs. Dern was the widow of Henry Dern. She was born in Niles and had lived in that place until a few years ago. She was the daughter of the late James Forbes and the late Jeannette Dwight Forbes.
  Surviving Mrs. Dern are three sisters, Mrs. Estelle Springer, Mrs. Emma Helmer and Mrs. Ella Wilson, all of Moravia; a brother, Ray Forbes of Niles; and several  nieces and nephews.
  Funeral services will be held at 2:30 Tuesday afternoon at the family home. Rev. Richard J. Blocker, pastor of Sand Beach Church, Fleming, will officiate. Burial will be in Owasco Rural Cemetery.

  Moravia. Oct. 26. — Henry Dern, 64, a farmer of the Town of Niles, died Thursday night at his home. He had been in ill health for a long time.
  Mr. Dern was born in Germany and had resided in this country for 40 years. For the past 25 years he had resided in the Town of Niles and was widely known. He is survived by his widow, Mary Dern.
  Funeral services will be conducted from the home at 2 o'clock on Sunday afternoon Rev. Richard J. Blocker, pastor of the Reformed Church of Owasco, will officiate. Interment will be In Owasco Rural Cemetery.

  Mrs. Eva M. Benson, 89, formerly of Pullman St., died yesterday at the Charlotte Nursing Home, where she had been a patient for several weeks.
  She was born on March 8, 1869, in the Town of Fairfield, a daughter of Charles and Margaret Forbes Helmer. On March 4, 1841, she was married to George Benson at her home in the Town of Fairfield. He died on Jan. 18, 1902.
  Mrs. Benson was a member of the local First Methodist Church.
  Surviving are a son, Charles of Mohawk; a granddaughter and two great granchildren of Ellenville; a brother, Charles Helmer, of Herkimer; several nieces and nephews.
  Services will be conducted at 1:30 p.m. tomorrow from the Fenner Funeral Home by the Rev. Fred G. Cotnam, pastor of First Methodist Church, with burial in Oak Hill Cemetery.

 - Death Announcement (The Syracuse Journal, NY, Monday, January 10, 1902)
  Herkimer. Jan. 20 - George Benson of East Herkimer, well and favorably known in this village, was killed at Rensselaer yesterday. Mr. Benson had been a member of a Central bridge gang, some other members of which were D. Harpin, Earl Jenkins and J. D. Davis of Herkimer, and for a few days had been at work in the vicinity of Albany, under Foreman Vosburgh. The men were in the railroad yard at Rensselaer when the accident occurred. They were warned off a track on which a train was approaching, and it is reported that for some reason Benson stepped back onto the track and before he could again get out of harm's way was struck knocked down and pushed ahead of the train, which was stopped before running over him. It appeared at first, however, that the injuries he had sustained were of a most serious nature. He was conveyed to the Homeopathic hospital, but died as stated.
  Mr. Benson was a native of Newport, but removed to Herkimer about 16 years ago. He was a member of the Methodist church and was a man who enjoyed the esteem of a legion of friends. His untimely death will be generally regretted. Besides his wife there survive two children, Bessie, aged 10, and Charles, aged 2; four sisters, Mrs. R. Helmer of Herkimer, Mrs. Lucy Shooks, Mrs. John Williams of New Hartford, and Mrs. A. S. Serviss of New York, and three brothers, Edward of Little Falls, Thomas of Middleville, and Aaron, who resides in Illinois.

 - Death Announcement (Gloversville Daily Leader, NY, Saturday, January 27, 1900)
  John Fullmer of North Creek, near Herkimer, died at his home at an early hour Thursday morning from injuries received by falling. Mr. Fullmer was about 88 years old, and was walking about his property last Wednesday, when he stepped upon some ice and was thrown violently to the ground. Dr. Kay of Herkimer, was called, but nothing that medical skill could do was of any avail, for his extreme age was against him. Mr. Fullmer lived on his farm at North Creek for many years and was a man highly respected in the community. He was born in Boonville.

   Ilion — Mrs. Jennie Margaret Potter, 86, of 6 Hillside P., died yesterday in the Dowling Nursing Home, Utica.
  A native of Fairfield, she was married in 1896, to Elvie S. Potter. He died in 1930.
  Mrs. Potter had lived in Ilion since 1944, having moved here from Herkimer.
  She was a member of the Presbyterian Church and a charter member of the Snells Bush Grange.
  She leaves two sons, Clark, New Hartford, and Raymond, Burlington Flats; two daughters, Mrs. Ira Vedder, Newport, and Mrs. Kenneth Broat, Ilion, with whom she had made her home; a brother, Charles Helmer, Little Falls.
  The funeral will be at 1:30 tomorrow from, the Fenner Funeral Home, Herkimer. with the Rev. Maurice C. Mitchell, pastor of the First Presbyterian Church. Ilion, officiating. Burial will be in Oak Hill Cemetery.
  Calling hours, at the funeral home are this afternoon and evening.

  Charles J. Helmer, 85, of North Creek Rd., Herkimer, RD, a farmer in this area for many years, retiring in 1934, died today in the van Allen Nursing Home, Little Falls.
  He was born on Sept. 7, 1877 in the Town of Fairfield, a son of Charles and Margaret Forbes Helmer. He married the former Bertha M. Cristman on Oct., 25, 1899, She died in 1940.
  Mr. Helmer was a member of the Reformed Church and the Fort Dayton Grange.

  Surviving are two sons, Norton, Helmer, Kast Bridge; Vance Helmer, Herkimer RD; 14 grandchildren, seven great grandchildren and several nieces and nephews.
  Rev. Forest L. Decker, Reformed Church pastor, will conduct services at 2 p.m. Thursday from the Fenner Funeral Home, where friends may call tomorrow afternoon and evening. Burial will be in Oak Hill Cemetery.

  Herkimer — Mrs. Charles Helmer, 63, died Aug. 22, 1940, in her home in the Town of Fairfield, following a long illness.
  Had she lived she would have been 64 years old on Aug. 30; She was born in the building in which she died, a daughter of Martin and Margaret Cristman.
  Her education was received in Fairfield rural schools. She was a member of the Fort Dayton Grange, Herkimer, the Herkimer Reformed Church and the Ladies Aid Society.
  Her husband is a direct descendant of Adam Helmer, the Revolutionary War scout. She leaves two sens, Martin and Vance, both of the Town of Fairfield; a sister, Mrs. Lindy L. Helmer, and a brother, Charles Cristman.
  The funeral will be conducted at 2 p. m., tomorrow from her home by the Rev. Martin A. DeWolfe. Interment will be in Oak Hill Cemetery, Herkimer.

  Herkimer - Pvt. Floyd Helmer, 26, was killed in action on the Italian front Dec. 6, according to a telegram from the Adjutant General's office received yesterday by his mother, Mrs. Flora Helmer, North Creek road, about two miles from Kast Bridge.
  Private Helmer was born July 1, 1917, on the Helmer homestead, town of Fairfield, a son of the late Henry and Mrs. Helmer. He received his education in Fairfield district school and West Canada Valley Central School.
  Before his induction into the armed forces May 26, 1942, he was employed at the Dairymen's League milk station in Middleville. After leaving from the Little Falls Draft board, he served at Camp Upton, Camp Coft, S.C., Camp Edwardes, Mass., before going overseas Mar. 24, 1943. He was active in the Sicillian and Italian campaigns.
  Surviving besides his mother are a half-sister, Mrs. Frank Fulmer, Herkimer and a half-brother, Murdock McPhearson, four nephews and one niece.

  Pvt. Floyd Helmer is buried in the Sicily-Rome cemetery, Nettuno, Italy.

  Mrs. Mary F. Brown, 90, died early Sunday morning, May 19, 1957, at the Howd Nursing Home, Moravia, N.Y.after a short illness.
   Brown was born in Niles and had lived in southern Cayuga County most of her life. She was a member of St. Matthew's Episcopal Church, Moravia.
  Surviving are a son, Clarence L. Brown, Sr., of Moravia; four grandchildren, Mrs. H. F. Edmunds and Mrs. Raymond Assmann, Auburn, Clarence L. Brown, Jr., Moravia and Mrs. Theodore Lobur, Groton, and nine greatgrandchildren.

  Services were held at 2 p.m. Tuesday at the home of her son on East Cayuga street, Moravia. The Rev. Benjamin Ford, rector of St. Matthew's Church officiated. Burial was in Indian Mound Cemetery.

  George W. Brown, 64, a native of the town of Moravia, died Wednesday morning at his home in Syracuse. Although he had been in poor health for three years his death was sudden and unexpected.
  For many years Mr. Brown resided on a farm in the town of Sempronius. He also resided on a farm for a time and was engaged in business there. Twelve years ago he moved to Syracuse, and for the past nine years had been engaged in the grocery business.
  He is survived by his widow; a daughter, Mrs. Harry Weeks of Syracuse; a son, Clarence Brown of Moravia, and a brother, Clarence Brown of Moravia.
  Dr. Bernard Clausen conducted the funeral services at the home yesterday afternoon and the body was taken to Moravia for burial in Indian Mound Cemetery.

 East Sempronius — The funeral services for Elmer Forbes, a well-known resident and a prominent farmer of the town of Sempronius, who passed away at his home Wednesday morning after only a week's illness of inflammatory rheumatism, were held at his late residence Friday afternoon at 2. They were largely attended by relatives and friends to pay their last tribute of respect, and there was a profusion of floral remembrances. Rev. Fred A. Whiting, pastor of the Sempronius Church, spoke words of comfort to those sorrowing.
  Elmer Forbes was born in the town of Niles, October 10, 1873, the only son of John and Lucy Helmer Forbes. On September 26, 1894, he was united in marriage with Miss Maude L Wood. Surviving are his widow, Mrs. Maude Wood Forbes, and one son, John W. Forbes, wh  has helped his father run the farm, and one sister, Mrs. Mary Brown of Moravia.
  The bearers were Howard Wood, Clair Wood, Clifford Wood, David Atwood, Maurice Atwood and Clarence Brown, all relatives.
  Burial was made in Sand Hill Cemetery, Dresservllle.

  Mrs. Maud L. Forbes, 79, a long-time resident of Sempronius, died on Saturday at Cortland Memorial Hospital. Where she had been a patient for two weeks.
  the widow of the late elmer Forbes, Mrs Forbes was born in Sempronius on November 25, 1875, the daughter of William and Mary Brown Wood. She spet all her life in Sempronius except two years lived in the town of Homer. Her husband died in 1938.
  Surviving are one son, John W. Forbes, Sempronius; one brother, Clifford Wood, Moravia RD, a half brother, David Atwood of Moravia RD, and several nieces, nephews and cousins.
  Funeral services will be held at 2 p.m. tomorrow at the Rounds Funeral Home in New Hope. The Rev. Bernard DeGraw, pastor of the New Hope Methodist Church will officiate. Interment will be in Sand Hill Cemetery, Dresserville.
   Friends may call at the funeral home this evening at their convenience.

  John W. Forbes, 70, Sempronius supervisor from 1940 to 1948, died Sunday in Cortland Memorial Hospital where he had been a patient since Friday.
  A life resident of Sempronius, Mr. Forbes, a Democrat, was a retired farmer. He was a member from 1948 through 1950 of the Moravia Central School board.
  He is survived by an uncle, David Atwood of Sempronius, and several cousins.
  Funeral services will be held at 2 p.m. Wednesday at the Wade Funeral Home in Moravia, with the Rev. Gary Selling of the New Hope Methodist Church officiating.
Burial will be in Sand Hill Cemetery, Dresserville.
  Friends may call from 2 to 4 p.m. and 7 to 9 p.m. Tuesday at the funeral home.

   Frank Harter died at his home, north of German street. Saturday night, aged about 47 years. Heart trouble was the cause of death.
