  Herkimer — Gorham H. Harter, 61, state highway engineer, died at the home of his mother. Mrs.George Gorham, Harter, in North Main St.1 last night, Mar. 21, 1938, after a long illnesa.
  He was born in Herkimer, Mar. 5, 1877, son of Mrs. George G. Harter and the late George Gorham Harter. He attended the local schools and later worked under the late D. C. Wood, civil engineer.
  In 1906 he had the third highest rating in a group of 200 who took an examination for the State Highway Department which was under organisation at that time.
  Mr. Harter was engineer in charge of the first state highway to be constructed in the Town of Herkimer which is now part of Route [# ?]. In 1908 he was named engineer in charge of maintenance and construction in Erie and Niagara Counties.
  Seven years ago he was assigned to Broome County in a similar capacity with offices in Binghamton. He lived there until 1937 when he resigned due to illness. He was a member of the Binghamton lodge of Elks.
  In Herkime r he was a member of the old Kappa Gamma Chi Club, the YMCA, the Herkimer Athletic Association and Christ Episcopal Chnrch.
  In 1892 he organized the first football team in Herkimer and until 1900 played on all the teams. He attended a meeting of the old athletic association at Richfield Springs last October.
  He was a director of the New York State Association of Highway Engineers and for two years served as its president. He was one of the oldest members of the State
Highway Department.
  Besides his mother he leaves his widow, the former Alicia Donnelley, Buffalo; one son, Desmond, Binghamton; two sisters, Mae C. Harter and Anna D. Harter, and
a brother, Floyd C. Harter, all of Herkimer.

  MRS. ALICIA M. GRAVES
   MOHAWK — Mrs. Alicia M. Graves, widow of Fred Graves, died yesterday in Herkimer Memorial Hospital.
She was born in Richfield Springs and was married to Gorham Harter, 1910 in Buffalo. He died in 1937. In 1940. she was married to Fred N Graves, a Mohawk funeral director. She was a member of Grace Episcopal Church. There are no near relatives. The funeral will be at 10 Thursday from Grace Episcopal Church. Burial will be in Oak Hill Cemetery, Herkimer. Arrangements are by the Fenner Funeral Home.

  Services for Maurice Fikes, 87, a graduate of Syracuse University, who died Friday in Detroit Mich.
 The services will be today at William R. Hamilton Funeral Home, 18900 James Corezeus Highway, Detroit.
  A native of Herkimer, he had been a resident of Detroit for the past 55 years. He was the oldest surviving charter member of Phi Kappa Alpha athletic honor society at Syracuse University. He was a member of the first law class graduating from the university.
  Mr. Fikes held may records for track, running the 100, 220 and 440-yard dashes and was known as "boy wonder." He was also a member of Beta Theta Pi.
  He paracticed law in Herkimer before joiniing Cadillac Motor Car Co. in 1907.
  Surviving are three daughters, Mrs. Cecil W. Lepard of Grosse Point Farms, Mich. Mrs. Richard Dubois Young of La Jolla, Calif., and Mrs. Richard Ruen of Birmingham, Mich.; a cousin Miss Mae Harter of Herkimer; nine grandchildren and eight great-grandchildren.

  After 14 months' illness, Daniel J. Forbes died at his home, No. 31 Capitol Street, last evening. Mr. Forbes was born in the town of Niles, March 9, 1851, his early life being spent in the towns of Niles and Owasco, and engaged in farming until about 25 or 30 years ago when be entered the employ of the D. M. Osborne Company and when it merged with the International Harvester Company he remained with it as a traveling salesman, which occupation he continued until forced by reason of illness to
give up.
  His reputation as a business man was exceptionally good and he possessed a wide circle of friends and acquainances who will deplore his death and deeply sympathize with his family.
  Beside his wife he is survived by one daughter, Mrs. Luman O. Alger of Auburn, one sister, Mrs. Elmer Barron of Niles, and four brothers, Frank, Charles and Adam Forbes of Niles and William D. Forbes of Port Byron.
  Funeral services, conducted by a nephew, Rev. H. E. Springer, pastor ot the M. E. Church at North Rose, N. Y., will be held at the house tomorrow afternoon at 2 o'clock, burial being made in Fort Hill Cemetery.

  Mrs. Mary Adell Forbes died of cerebral hemorrhage, early this morning at the home of her daughter, Mrs. Luman S. Alger, No. 11 Chestnut Street. Mrs. Forbes had been in poor health for the past 10 weeks. She was well known and her demise will be felt by a large circle of friends. Daniel J. Forbes, her husband, died in October, 1915, while her brother, former Assemblyman Charles S. Springer died June 7 last.
   Besides her daughter, she leaves one sister, Mrs. William Rogers of Moravia, and three brothers, Edson C. Springer of Moravia, Mortimer S. Springer of Auburn and Gordon B. Springer of Genoa. Funeral services will be held at the house at 2:30 o'clock Monday afternoon, with burial beside her husband in Fort Hill Cemetery.

  Luman S. Alger, 67, retired farmer of Ledyard, Cayuga County, died of heart complications at the Cortland County Hospital Monday afternoon after a short Illness.
  Born on May 23, 1878 at Owasco, Mr. Alger was the son of Addison and Arminda Primm Alger. He had lived in Ledyard for the past 10 years. He is survived by his widow, Mrs. Verna Forbes Alger; and two sisters, Mrs. Henry D. Parson of Auburn and Mrs. Raymond Horton.
  The funeral will be held from the late home in Ledyard Thursday afternoon with Rev. H. D. Jones and Rev. Floyd M. Morris officiating. Interment will be in the Owasco Rural Cemetery. The Odd Fellows of Poplar Ridge will attend the funeral in a body.

  Born in Nlles, Mr. Forbes was a resident of Port Byron for 58 years. For 30 years, he was employed by the International Harvester Company, retiring in 1927. He was formerly n member of Auburn Council, United Commercial Travelers.
Mr. Forbes is survived by a
  daughter, Miss Myrtle E. Forbes, and a son, Harold P. Forbes, both of Port Byron; also by several nieces.

  Mrs. Estelle Springer, 86, widow of Edson Springer, died Thursday morning at the home of her son, Mortimer Springer, 15 North Main Street, Moravia. Mrs. Springer suffered a stroke Wednesday.
  A native of Niles, Mrs. Springer, went to Moravia 47 years ago. She was a member of the First Methodist Church of Moravia about 35 years and also belonged to the Owasco Valley Chapter, Order of the Eastern Star.
  Surviving besides her son are two sisters, Mrs. Emma Helmer and Mrs. Ella Wilson, both of Moravia; a brother, Ray Forbes of Niles; two grandchildren, Mrs. Lyle Thorpe of Moravia and Mrs. Henry Smith of Enid, Okla. four great-grandchildren.
   Services will be conducted at 8:30 p. m. Saturday at the home of her son by Rev. Ralph L. Smith pastor of the Methodist Church. Burial will be in Indian Mound Cemetery, Moravia.

MORAVIA TWINS DIED MONDAY FEW HOURS APART
   Identical twins, 84 years old of Moravia, died within a few hours of each other Monday.
  They were Mrs. Emma Helmer, who died yesterday morning in the Cortland Hospital and Mrs. Ella Wilson who died during the afternoon at her home in Moravia, without knowing of her sisters death.
  The twins were born May 5, 1861, at Niles and were the daughters of Mr. and Mrs. James Forbes.
  Mrs. Helmer, the widow of Smith Helmer, lived all her life in Niles and Moravia. Taken to Cortland hospital, she died following an operation. A member of Moravia Methodist church and Owasco Valley chapter, OES, she is survived by a daughter, Miss Mary Helmer of Moravia; a brother, Ray Forbes of Niles, and several nieces and nephews.
  Services were conducted at 2:30 p. m. Wednesday at Wade's funeral home.
  Mrs. Wilson died as a result of a heart attack at her home at Quaker Church, Moravia, where she spent her entire life. Surviving are two daughters, Mrs. Emma Wilson and Mrs. D. N.  -Obituary (The Auburn Citizen, NY, Wednesday, May 3, 1916)
  Moravia, May 3.—Smith Helmer, 65 years old, a well known resident of this town, died suddenly this morning about 11 o'clock. He was standing in front of the postofflce in Main Street about 11 o'clock talking to S. A. Odell when without any warning he fell to the ground. He was carried into the postofflce and physicians were hurriedly summoned. Doctors Anthony, Dodge and Cooke responded promptly but Mr. Helmer was beyond mortal aid. Doctor Anthony as village health officer gave the cause of death as apoplexy and permitted the removal of the body to the family home in Congress Street.
  Mr. Helmer had been a farmer all his life, residing for years just West of the village on the Oak Farm. In the Spring of last year he moved into the village and had since made his home here. He is survived by his widow, one daughter, Miss Mary Helmer, and one son, Fred Helmer, and one brother, William Helmer, all of this village. The son is at present in Norfolk, Va. and arrangements for the funeral are incomplete pending the receipt of word of the time of his arrival home.
