Vassar, June 24-- Warren C. Smith, who for the past two years has been in poor health died at the Soldiers’ Home at Grand Rapids, where he was taken a few weeks ago. Mr. Smith was born in Ohio in 1842 and received his early training on the farm and his education in the district school. Over forty years ago he came to Michigan and located in Vassar, following the occupation of a shoemaker most of the time, with the exception of a few years when he went on a farm for the benefit of his health.
Early in the Civil War he enlisted and was in many of the heaviest battles of the war, being wounded a number of times. He drew a pension from the government and to the needy poor he was always ready and willing to help, though being a comparatively poor man himself. For years he ran a cobbler shop here but on account of paralysis he was obliged to give up his favorite occupation some time ago.
He is survived by three children, Mrs. M.H. Ogden, of this place; W.A. Smith, of Onaway, and Roy C. Smith of Vassar. The funeral was held on Thursday from the residence of his daughter, Mrs. Ogden. The local W.T. Sherman G.A.R. post of which he was a member having charge of the funeral. Rev. C.H. Perrin officiating.

Death From Apoplexy
Thomas Mitts Met Death at His Home in Vassar Under Unusual Circumstances
Thomas Mitts, of Vassar, died suddenly at his home Friday. He was assisting in the demolition of a frame building, and fell from the rafters to the floor. Those who went to his assistance found him unconscious, and he died within fifteen minutes. Under the circumstances a postmortem and inquest followed, and from the evidence the jury brought in a verdict that death was due to apoplexy which had seized him while at work and caused the fall. Mr. Mitts was 75 years of age, and is survived by seven children, three, Peter of Saginaw, and Benson and Mrs. J.F. Kelsey, living in Saginaw. The remains will be taken to Clio, Monday for burial.
