Morton Darling; 53 [sic], a carpenter of No. 363 1/2 (?) Tallman street, died in the Hospital of the Good Shepherd at 1 o'clock yesterday afternoon, the victim of a saloon, brawl last Friday night.
James Coolican, part owner of Coollcan & Benson's saloon. No. 101 Bellevue avenue, was liberated in $2,000 bail yesterday with a charge of manslaughter second degree, lodged against him.
Coolican had been held since Monday on an open charge pending an investigation into Friday night's events that culminated in Darling's death.
Darling had gone into the saloon with his son, Lloyd, 18, and entered an argument with a man standing near him at the bar. Coolican, who was tending bar, intervened and Darling is said to have called him an objectionable name.
According to the story told by young Darling to Coroner Crane, Coolican then struck his father, who fell to the floor, and was later taken home. It was not thought that his injury was serious until Monday afternoon, when he began to fail rapidly.
Dr. Frederick H. Knoff ordered-him taken to the hospital, where he became unconscious. It was discovered that his skull was fractured. He remained unconscious until his death.
When Darling died Coolican was arraigned before Justice B. B. Parsons in Police Court. He was represented by Richard P. Byrne, who applied for the prisoner's release on bail. Assistant District Attorney Ford appeared for the state.
