For Martin Carson, the census taker appears to have mis-transcribed ‘Carson’ as ‘Conover.’ Enumerated below Martin is a 14-year-old male who cannot be shown from other records to be a son of Martin and Christiana Carson. The surname of this 14-year-old is recorded as ‘Van Alstine,’ and the census taker appears to have assigned this surname to1840 census, Root Montgomery, NY, 2 males under 5; 1 male 5-9; 1 male 30-39; 2 females under 5; 1 female 30-39 everyone else in this household, except Martin. The first names and ages of everyone in the household (except the 14-year-old male) are consistent with other sources for the Martin and Christiana Carson family.
