MINIATURE LOCOMOTIVE IS BUILT BY EVERETT GLENAR
The Morning Herald, Gloversville and Johnstown, NY, Wednesday, June 23, 1954

A miniature steam railroad locomotive, capable of pulling 1,000 pounds or more, has been completed, after seven years of work, by Everett D. Glenar, 22 Parkwood Avenue, proprietor of the service station at 390 North Perry Street.
He next will build a tender, then six flat, cars, each large enough to carry two persons, and he and Allen O. Craig of Gloversville, who is interested in the same hobby, plan to build 250 feet of 3 1/2 inch track on the latter's property on the extension of Steele Avenue near the fish hatchery.
A newspaperman visited the "round house" in the service station Monday afternoon , and watched with interest as the builder fired the boiler until he had built up the necessary steam pressure, then pulled the tiny throttle which started the drive wheels in operation, even though it was blocked up and standing still. It is copied after the New Central Hudson type, 5300 series, weighs 240 pounds, has a height of 11 5/16 inches, width of 7 1/2 inches and is complete in every detail, built on a scale of 3/8 inch to one foot.
The four pilot wheels are 2 1/4 inches high, the six drive wheels 4 15/16 inches, and the four rear truck wheels 3 1/4 inches.
It is a 2-cylinder railroad type engine, has a boiler with 24 one half inch copper flues, 4 3/4 inch super heater and combustion chamber with six circulating tubes. The cylinders have a 1 7/16 inch bore and 1 3/4 inch stroke, while the piston valves have a 7/8 inch diameter and 9/16 inch stroke.
Constructed of copper, steel, etc., the wheels are made from castings, but the remainder of the work was done by hand. The 2-foot boiler is covered with a jacket of asbestos and stovepipe metal.
The locomotive operates on steam pressure of between 100 and 125 pounds, but the boiler has been tested up to 300 pounds. It has a safety valve and automatic water pump (with auxiliary hand pump if needed).
The overall length of the locomotive and tender will be six feet, the wheelbase on the former being 30 1/4 inches and the latter 27 1/16 inches.
Because of cramped space it was necessary to remove the roof from the cab to fire the boiler.
Charcoal soaked in alcohol was used first and after a good fire had been started in the 10-inch firs box, a high grade of soft coal used by blacksmiths was added.
After waiting about 10 minutes, the steam gauge showed 75-pound pressure, Glenar opened the throttle and the miniature iron horse came to life in exactly the same manner as its mighty counterpart
A locomotive of this type has drawn as many as eight persons, he said, and can "go like a bat"
While he did not keep track of the time spent during the 7-year period, Glenar said it has been estimated by builders of this model that it requires about 4,000 hours of work.
He placed a value of $4,500 on his finished locomotive.
Glenar said he started on this hobby nearly a quarter century ago he didn't know exactly why or how, probably because of his leaning to mechanics.
He has built two others, one a toy electric train which he still has, and the other a "steamer," which he sold. His pal. Craig, has built two smaller models, one of which uses a 2 1/2 inch track.
He started to get together his plans and specifications for the one just completed back in 1941, Glenar said, then the war came along and he put it off until 1947 when he started the actual construction.
Glenar is an honorary member of the New England Live Steamers' Association, made up of 60 or more similar enthusiasts.
A former employe of the General Electric Co., he has been connected with the automobile business between 20 and 25 years, at his present location since 1933.
