Mr. Auert was born in ----, France, April 2, 1869, son of Christopher and Catherine Hess Auert. His father was one of the 12 hand guards of the Emperor Napoleon. Christopher and his family came to America in 1873 [?] locating in what was then Deerfield Village.   He went to work for the wholesale and retaildrug firm of John B. Shehan & company and remaind at that position four years.. Feburary 29, 1892, he went into business for himselfat what was then Deerfield Corners and there he remained until June 5, 1923, when he went into the real estate business. He was the largest business establishment in the town.
Mr. Auert was enterprising and had an excellent reputation in the business world. He had long been a member of the Utica Chamber of Commerce. Deerfield was annexed to Utica in1914 and has since been the 14th Ward. No man contributed more to its grown and advancement than did Mr. Auert. After the passing of Frederick G. Weaver, Mr. Auert was the stong man of the place to whom the public went for advice in business or financial matters. He organized the volunteer fire department which existed for 18 years, and was the secretary for a time.
He was a leader in the project of paving North Genesee Street. He organized the Gentelmens Driving Club, which conducted meetings for 10 years.
Mr. Auert was acrive in getting the tracks laid on the overhead crossing so that street cars could run through the village. He was involved in all the projects for the benefit of the section and orriginated most of them. He enjoyed the confidences placed in him and demonstrated that he was worthy of it. After he had been in business for himself for 30 years he had not taken more than three weeks of vacation. since 1920 he had been a member of the Automobile Club of Utica and a Director.
Mr. auert was a member of the Republican Club. He was appointed postmaster of Deerfield in 1908 and held th eposition 20 years. Although the village was annexd to Utica in 1914, the postoffice continued to be known as Deerfield and Mr. Auert remained in service. He was very active and efficient in getting the government to make the office a substation and it was named in honor of the late James S. Sherman. It was also given delivery twice a day. Mr. Auert served until June 1, 1922 [?].
When the United States entered the World War, Mr. Auert was appointed on the drat board for Utica and served devotedly until 1929. His associates were James K. O'Connor and Dr. T. J. Fay. Mr. Auert served mostly from 7 p.m. to midnight and like his associates, received only a dollar a year. It was a difficult and delicate duty requiring considerable shrewness and ingenuity to find out which claims were bogus and which were genuine.
In 1891 Mr. Auert married Miss Carrie Whitman, who died in 1898. In 1901 he married Miss Margaret Ruth Weaver, daughter of Frederick G. Weaver, who is living. His children are Christopher J., Ruth Weaver, Frances, Frederick Weaver and Margaret.
