- Newspaper Article (The Buffalo Courier, NY, June 22, 1910)
Leo Putnam. 16 years old, who resided with his parents at No. 168 Tryon Place, was drowned in Niagara River near the foot of Massachusetts Street late yesterday afternoon.
According to the police of the West Delavan Avenue station, who investigated the case, there were ten boys who attempted to swim from the waterworks pumping station to Bird Island pier, a distance of about 600 feet.
The Putnam boy was seen to throw up his hands and utter an outcry. Then he sank from sight. He came to the surface twice, but being considerably in the lead of the other young boys, they were unable to each him in time to save his life.
The body had not been recovered at a late hour last night, although life savers and other parties were dragging the river for it. The patrol boat crew is dragging the river along with the life savers.
The dead boy's father, Clifford M. Putnam, who is employed by the American Express Company, was at the scene of the drowning within a short time after the accident occurred. He spent all night watching for the recovery of the body.

- Newspaper Article (Buffalo Evening News, NY, Tuesday, July 14, 1953)
Howard E. Sherwood, 55, of 276 Hampshire St., going home from work in the Massachusetts Avenue Pumping Station, was carried to his death about 11 o'clock Monday night when his auto plunged into Day's Slip, off the old Erie Canal at the foot of Vermont St.
A Coast Guard crew commanded by Boatswain's Mate Second Class James Hogan, aided by Robert E. Weber of 369 Genesee St. and his 14-foot motorboat, grappled in the slip for about an hour before recovering the auto in 22 feet of water.
Only a cigarette case was found in the car when it was raised. Hundreds of persons watched while the Coast Guardsmen continued their search for Mr. Sherwood's body, which was recovered about 2:15 o'clock this morning.
The search was lighted by seven 1000-watt floodlights on the Fire Department's Auxiliary 2 Light Rig & Power Plant.
Mr. and Mrs. Weber were mooring their boat when they saw Mr. Sherwood's car, southbound, swerve off Waterworks Drive at a curve, climb an embankment and leap a steel guard rail at the edge of the slip.
Their shouts attracted the attention of Ramon G. Milkie, 21, of 46 Manchester PI. and Miss Edith Tschampel, 19, of 342 East North St., who said they saw the car "go over the side and sink in the water"
Mr. Milkie leaped into the water and aided Mr. Weber in efforts to find the car while Casimir Kaczmarek of 39 Bissell Ave., on the way to work in the pumping station, summoned police.
Lieut. Anthony R. Lojacono of the West Delavan Station and Detectives John C. Rapp, Sylvester W. Delaney and William H. Schrader took over the police phase of the investigation.
Rescue Squad 5, Dr. John Jusczak, a Columbus Hospital physician on ambulance duty, and the Rev. John F. Tully, Fire Department chaplain and assistant pastor of St. Joseph's Cathedral, and Medical Examiner Rocco N. DeDominicis stood by during the search.
Charles A. Runfola of 73 Gallatin St., a clerk, said that he relieved Mr. Sherwood at 10:45 o'clock, an hour before the regular time for the shift change at the pumping station. Bernard Wojda of 92 Walden Ave., a mechanic employed at the station, said that Mr. Sherwood, a bachelor who lived alone, had suffered what appeared to be heart attacks on several occasions while at work.
Robert A. and John F. Gorman, brothers, who also live at 276 Hampshire St., confirmed that Mr.Sherwood had suffered several attacks of a sudden ailment. They said he was a 32d degree Mason and attended Emanuel Baptist Church.
Medical Examiner James F. Benedict said an autopsy will be performed.
