A distressful fatality occurred in the town of Columbia last Saturday night when the home of William Christman, a farmer aged 89 years, was destroyed by fire. Charred remains of the old gentleman's body were found in the ruins, proving boyond doubt that he was burned to death. Mr. Christman lived alone and was in the habit of slleing with a lamp burning in the room. the lamp is supposed to to have been the origin of the fire, but the method by which the fire was started will probably never be definitely known. The fire was discovered by Leon H. Burke, who quickly gave the alarm, but it was too late to save either the building, or the aged occupant. Coroner Manion of Ilion was notified and will make a thro investigation. Deceased had lived in this same place all his life and was a good citizen, highly respected by his neighbors. He is survived by two daughters, Mrs. Frank N. Petrie and Mrs. Geo. Manning, both of the town of Columbia.
Owing to the condition of the remains no funeral service will be held, but on Tuesday nftornoon at 1 o'clock Rev. E. D. Ridgeway will conduct a prayer service at the grave in the private graveyard situated on the farm property.

News that comes as a shock to his many friends throughout Herkimer county is that of the death while in Florida, where he was spending the winter, of Frank N. Petrie of the Town of Columbia. Mrs. Petrie was with her husband in Florida.
His ancestor, Col. Jacob Petrie, with his large family, chose a favorable sight on Columbia's hills and founded Petrie's Corners, now Columbia Center. The son Conradt cleared the land and located his cabin opposite the M. P. church. Daniel, built a hotel where Ed. House now lives, Han Yost opcated on the hill, for many years the home of. David Hater and Peter Clapsaddle; George, the Damon Getman farmstead; Fredrick in the pasture south of the Stevens place; Jacob, Jr., opposite B. J. Oxner's, while of the daughters, Eve married Peter Hoyer, Katy married John Hoyer, Delia married Nicholas Osterhout, Polly married Abram Jacobson and Betsey married a Mr. Graems, and thus it was that before the middle of the century the family was pretty numerous and the various members of the family occupied nearly every farm between Petrie's Corners and Orendorf's Corners. George Petrie was a sergeant in the war of 1812. His son, William, married Charlotte Jacques and their one child, Frank N. Petrie, was soon left fatherless. From a clerkship in the general dry goods and grocery store of John D. Hunter, he became proprietor of a store of his own, was supervisor for several terms and served as chairman of that body. Later he was financial clerk of the assembly several terms and was for a number of years in the United States customs service in New York City. He was a staunch Republican and served as committeeman and as chairman of the county committee. He was a prominent Mason and was identified with the Knignts Templars and the Shriners. But he was nearly or quite the last of his numerous clan in town, and his useful career ended at the early age of 62. He is survived by his wife, who was Ida Cristman, daughter of William and Dorothy Bell. Saturday the body was brought back to the home they left so hopefully in the autumn and where funeral service was held Wednesday at 2 p. m. His devoted wife has the sincere sympathy of all who ever knew them.
