  Ella, aged flfty-one years, wife of Stephen W. Smith of Ephratah, died Wednesday afternoon at 2:30 at her home in that place. She was a member of the Methodist church and a woman who had many friends.
  Besides her husband she is survived by three sons. Roy of Rockwood, and Harry and Howard, who reside at home.
  The funeral will be held at the home Saturday afternoon at 1 o'clock and interment will be made in the Ephratah cemetery.

  Dr. Frank G. Carder, rendered a verdict of accidental drowning in the death of Stephen W. Smith aged 75 years, former resident of 307 East Main street, whose body was found in Vandenburghs pond, on top of Bleecker Mountain Saturday afternoon, as reported in The Leader-Republican on that day.
  According to the report a call was received at the office of Eugene Smith. Saturday afternoon at 1:10, saying Mr. Smith had been missing since Thursday. Deputies Carver Pryne and William Argotsinger were sent to the pond, where the missing man had a cottage, and where he had been in the habit of spending the Summer. The search was started in that vicinity.
  After the discovery, Dr. Calder went to the scene to investigate and said the condition of the body indicated death had occurred approximately 48 hours earlier. It is believed Smith suffered a fainting spell and fell into the water,
   Mr. Smith was born February, 15, 1858, son of William Smith and Delia (Darby) Smith. He resided in the Town of Ephratah for a number of years and was engaged in farming.
  He was married to Ella Smith, who passed away in 1918, and was remarried in 1919 to Mary Alice Morey, when the couple came to Johnstown, where he resided until a few months ago when he moved to Oneida. His second wife died in 1938.
  Monday he moved into the cottage at the pond in Bleecker, where he planned to spend the Summer. He was last seen alive Thursday.
  The survivors are two sons, Roy Smith. Rockwood, and Howard Smith, Cobleskill; one sister, Mrs. Lucinda Dorn, Johnstown; one step-daughter, Mrs. Leon Jones, Johnstown; also several grandchildren.
  The body was brought to the Wassung & Brown Funeral Home, where the funeral will be held tomorrow afternoon at 2:30. The Rev. Paul Hydon of the North Main Street Methodist church, Gloversville, will officiate. Burial will be made in Fern Dale cemetery.

  Mr. Sidney Lunger of Montour Falls, N. Y., and Miss Mabel H. Shults were united in marriage by the Rev. H. J. Watkins, at the home of the bride's parents, Mr. and Mrs. John P. Shults, 561 Walnut street, at 5 o'clock Wednesday afternoon.
  Miss Gertrude Wilson was bridesmaid and Mr. Walter Shultz, a brother of the bride, was best man.
  The bride was attired in a handsome wedding gown of lansdown, ashes of rose colored. She carried a large bunch of white roses.
  Miss Wilson wore a sea foam green silk, and carried pink roses, The house was beautifully decorated with cut flowers and potted plants. The couple stood under an arch of smilax while the ceremony was being performed. The bride received many costly and useful presents. A wedding supper was served after the ceremony, aud the couple departed on the 6:40 p. m. train for Montour Falls, which place they will make their future home. The best wishes of many friends go with them for a happy and prosperous journey through their married life.— Loekport Darfy Journal, April 30th.

  Frank P. Shults of 31 North Street well known business man and for the past six and one half years a member of the Common Council of the City of Gloversville died at 8:46 o'clock yesterday afternoon at the Nathan Littauer hospital. He was 50 years old.
   In addition to being prominent in the industrial and civic life of the city Mr. Shults was for many years a leading member of St. James Lutheran church. He was in charge of the committee that supervised extensive alterations and repairs that were made at the church last fall.
   Mr. Shults was born in Canajoharie on February 2, 1876. He came to Gloversvllle 30 years ago. For many years he served in the capacity of bookkeeper with the Rea, White and Carter firm aud upon dissolution of that concern he was employed at the Robert Rea and Sons Plant. He conducted that business himself for two years.
   Later he became associated with the Dempster Place company a former well known firm of glove manufacturers in Gloversvllle. When that concern went out of business he entered into business again with the firm of Dunkel and Shults.
   Elected to the Board of Aldermen in 1920 as a representative from the Sixth Ward. He had served continuously in that capacity from year to year. The excellence of his service to his constituents was fairly reflected in his election year after year to represent them in the city's governing body.
   Not only among the voters in the Sixth Ward did Alderman Shults have many friends but In every section of the city may be found scores who were proud to call him friend. Honest to the core his administration of his obligation to his constituents was unfailing throughout his three terms of office.
   He served as chairman of the building committee and also of the auditing committee of the Common Council several years. He was also a member of the judiciary and legal proceedings committee and of the police committee of the council.
   For 24 years Mr. Shults was a faithful member of St. James Lutheran church. He was a powerful factor in bringing that church to the place it holds today. Serving as a trustee and also as a member of the church council he was a powerful influence there.
   When the church decided last year to make extensive alterations and repairs Mr. Shults was selected as the man to have full charge of this work.
   He is survived by his wife, Mrs. Emma Shults; two sons Harold Bergman Shults and Kenneth Henry Shults both of Gloversvllle, his mother, Mrs. Amelia Shults: one brother, Arthur Shults and two aunts Miss Rachael Shults and Mrs. Celestla Wollett.
  The body was taken to Walrath and Bushouer Funeral Home and prepared for burial. It was later taken to the late home, 31 North street, where the funeral will be held Sunday afternoon at 3 o'clock. Rev. W. W, Murkier, pastor of St. James Lutheran church will officiate and interment will be made in Prospect Hill cemetery.

  Mrs. Emma B. Shults, 94 of 15 Almond Street, died at 12:35 this morning in the extended care facility of Littauer Hospital where she had been a patient since June. She had been in ill health for six months.
   Born in Bleecker, Oct. 18,1880, daughter of William and Catherine Bergman, she received her education in Bleecker schools. In 1897 she moved to Gloversville where she had since resided.
   On Aug. 6, 1902, she was married to Frank Shults, who died May 6, 1926. Mrs. was a glove worker at home, retiring 15 years ago. She was a member of St. James Lutheran Church and the Daughters of Luther. In addition, she was a member of the Cayadutta Chapter, OES.
   Mrs. Shults is survived by two sons, Harold B. and Kenneth H., both of Gloversville; one granddaughter, nieces and, a cousin.

  Harold B. Shults, 93, formerly of 13 Northern Boulevard, Gloversville, died Friday evening at the Wells House in Johnstown. Born May 6, 1903 in Gloversville, he was the son of Frank and Emma Bergman Shults. He was a 1923 graduate of Gloversville High School and was a life-long area resident.
   Mr. Shults owned and operated Dunkel & Shults Stove Store from 1926 to 1933. He later was employed as a foreman of Robison & Smith Dry Cleaning for 32 years, retiring in 1968.
   He was an active member of the St. James Lutheran Church of Gloversville and its Bible study group. He was a member of the Gloversville Masonic Lodge #429 and a past master of the lodge. He was a past potentate of the Cyprus Shrine Temple and a member of the Sigma Bodies of the Scottish Right Valley of Schenectady.
   In 1976, Mr. Shults became a 33rd Degree Mason. In 1965, he became High Priest of the Johnstown Royal Arch Masons. He belonged to the Royal Order of the Jesters of the Masonic Order, the Red Cross of Constantine, and was the Illustrious Master of Johnstown Council and a past commander of the Holy Cross Commandry of Gloversville.
   Mr. Shults was predeceased by his wife, Bonnie Veronica Lyndugh Shults, whom he married on June 24, 1929. She died on their 59th wedding anniversary in 1988. Survivors include one brother, Kenneth H. Shults of Amsterdam; and several nieces, nephews, great nieces and great nephews.
   Calling hours will be 4 to 8 p.m. Sunday at the Hollenbeck Funeral Home, 4 Second Ave., Gloversville. There will be a Masonic Ritual at 4 p.m Sunday in the funeral home.
   Service will be conducted 11 a.m. Monday at the funeral homewith the Rev. Paul D. Rohrbacher of the St. James Lutheran Church of Gloversville officiating.

  Two popular members of Gloversville's younger set, Miss Veronica Lynaugh, daughter of Mrs. J. C. Lynaugh of 98 Sixth avenue and Harold B. "Deacon" Shults, son of Mrs. Frank Shults of 31 North street were united in marriage yesterday morning at 11 at the rectory of the Sacred Heart church. Tbe ceremony was performed by the Rev. J. W. McCall, pastor.
   The bride wore a white silk ensemble, with hat to match and a corsage of orchids. Mrs. R. P. Campfleld, of Utica and sister of the bride was the maid of honor. She wore a pink silk ensemble and a corsage of orchids. The best man was Kenneth H. Shults, brother of the bridegroom.
   The bride presented her attendant with a crystal necklace while the best man received a lighter and billfold from the bridegroom.
   Immediately after the ceremony a wedding breakfast was served at the home of the bride to immediate members of the families.
   The newlyweds left for a wedding trip through the New England States. They will reside at 31 North street. The bride's going away outfit was a yellow dress with hat to match and sheer black velvet coat.
   The bride is a graduate of the Johnstown High school and the Gloversvllle Business School. She has been the guest of honor at numerous pre-nuptlal events and received many lovely gifts. The bridegroom is a graduate of the Gloversvllle High school and is connected with the firm of Dunkel A Shults. Both he and his bride are popular among the younger set and have a host of friends.
   The out-of-town guests were Mr. and Mrs. R. P. Campfleld of Utica and Mr. and Mrs. T. B. Judge.

  Funeral services for Eugene Whyland, about 60, who died Friday at his home in Syracuse, were held Monday afternoon at 2 at the Catherine Nellis Memorial Chapel and were in charge of the Masonic lodge of which the deceased was a member. Interment was in the Fort Plain cemetery.
   Mr. Whyland is survived by his wife and one son, Syracuse. Mr. Whyland was one of the three first village mail carriers in the Fort Plain postoffice, the other two being Seward Walrath and Edwin W. Wood. For the past 28 years he had been employed in the Franklin automobile plant at Syracuse, until that concern ceased business. Mr. Whyland was a native of Fort Plain.

   He married Mrs. Edith Bierman in 1961.
   Mr. Shults was the president and founder of the Champion Construction & Engineering Co., Inc., Long Island City, N. Y. He held a B. of E. E. from Cooper Union, New York City and a Professional Engineers' License. He was active in labor matters as the president of the Boiler & Plate Work Erecting Contractors Association, secretary-treasurer of the Rigging Contractors Association, trustee of the Boilermakers' Local Lodge No. 5 Welfare, Pension and Vacation Funds, member of the Board of Governors of the Building Trades' Employers' Association member of the Joint Engineers Trade Board, of The Engineers' Club, all of New York City, and of Radium Lodge No. 844, F. & A.M. of Ossining.
   Funeral services will be held at Gray's Funeral Parlor, Fort Plain, on Friday morning and interment will follow at the Van Hornesville Cemetery, Van Hornesville, N. Y.

  Fort Plain, July 18. The body of Mrs. Clyde Shults, who died at her home in Ossining of childbirth, was brought to this village, and a service was held Saturday at the grave in the Fort Plain cemetery, where the interment was made. The Rev. Herbert F. Moulton, D.D., pastor of the Universalist church, officiated.
   Mrs. Shults was born in Fort Plain 33 years ago and was a daughter of I. M. Lawrence, now of Middletown. Besides her father she is survived by her husband and infant son.


Ida Mae Wiles

 - Like her mother-in-law, Mae Wiles graduated from the Oswego Normal School.  Her family also lived in Stark Twp., Herkimer Co., NY, the same township where Mary E. Champion's family lived.  Perhaps one or both of these links brought Clyde and Mae together after Clyde's first wife's death.  Mae's mother, Ida Young Wiles, died in her son-in-law's home in 1947.   Canajoharie — Mrs. Irene Shults Hambrecht, 70, widow of George Hambrecht Jr, of 40 Rock St., died last night in St. Mary's Hospital, Amsterdam.
   She was born in Canajoharie, daughter of William and Katharine Lynch Shults, and had lived here all her life. Mr. Hambrecht died in 1942. Mrs. Hambrecht was a member of SS. Peter and Paul's Church and its Rosary Society. She was a past regent of Ft. Rensselaer Chapter of the National Society of the Daughters of the American Revolution and a member of the State DAR Officers Club.
   She leaves two daughters, Mrs. Mary H. Dillon, Canajoharie, and Mrs. Stanton Garner, Riverside, R. I.
   The funeral will be at 9:30 tomorrow from SS. Peter and Paul's Church, where the Rev. John J. Hogan, pastor, will offer a solemn requiem Mass. Burial will be in SS. Peter and Paul's Cemetery.
   The Rosary will be recited at 8 tonight in the Lenz Funeral Home.

  CANAJOHARIE, June 29. — George H. Hambrecht, Jr, 53, died at 2:15 o'clock yesterday morning at his home, 20 Rock Street, after a long illness.
   Born in Nelllston, February 9, 1890, he was the son of George D., and Mary Tiergarten Hambrecht. A resident of Canajoharie for 40 years, he was educated in the public schools and for sometime was associated with the firm of Hambrecht Brothers, local wood-workers and blacksmiths. In 1918, he entered the employe of the Beech-Nut Packing Company. Ill health forced his retirement. Mr. Hambrecht was active in athletic circles and was among the best basketball players of the village. A musician of ability, he played with many Mohawk Valley orchestras and was a master drummer. He was a member of St John's Lutheran Church..
   Surviving beside his wife, Mrs. Irene Shults Hambrecht, are two daughters, Mary Katharine and Katherlne Shults Hambrecht, Canajoharie; one brother, Henry, Syracuse; two nephews, and aunts and cousins.
   The funeral will be held at 2 o'clock Tuesday, at the Lens funeral home with the Rev. Herman F. Vesper, pastor of St John's Lutheran Church, officiating. Interment will be in Fort Plain Cemetery.

  Funeral services of George H. Hambrecht, Jr., former town clerk of the Town of Canajoharie, who passed away at his home at 20 Rock street on Sunday morning, were held at the Lens funeral home at 89 Otsego street on Tuesday afternoon at 2 o'clock. The service was conducted by the Rev. Herman F. Vesper, pastor of St. John's Lutheran Church, of which the deceased was a member. Interment was made in the Fort Plain Cemetery.
   The bearers were Temple Stahler of Fort Plain, Charles E. Conboy Albert Maxson and Floyd Coppernoll, all of this village.

Peter and Paul's Catholie church on Cliff street, took place the marriage of Miss Irene Shults, daughter of Mr. and Mrs. William Shults, to Town Clerk-elect George H. Hambrecht, son of Mr. and Mrs. George Hambrecht, the ceremony being performed by the Rev. Father Bloomer. The attending couple was Mr. and Mrs. Albert Maxson, cousins of the bride. The bride was prettily attired in a suit of blue broadcloth trimmed with chinchilla fur and wore a hat to match.
   Mr. and Mrs. Hambrecht left on the 9:22 New York Central train for a wedding trip to Philadelphia and Washington. D. C. Upon their return they will begin housekeeping in the Barrett house on Cliff street.
   Both are well known and esteemed young people who have the best wishes of a large circle of friends and acquaintances.

  Mrs. Florence Rachel Dewing, 78, a native of Amsterdam, died yesterday at the home of her son, William E. Dewing, in Whitesboro, with whom she resided. She had been in ill health for several months.
   Born in Amsterdam Feb. 25, 1887, daughter of Edwin J. and Dora Etta Meyers Shults, she attended Amsterdam schools and after graduation from Amsterdam High School was employed as a proofreader for the Amsterdam Evening Recorder.
   She also operated the Hickory Grove Inn in Cooperstown.
   She lived for a brief period in Schenectady but for 25 years had resided in Ilion where her husband was employed by Remington Rand.
   Her husband, George T. Dewing, whom she married in Amsterdam in October of 1920, died in June of 1956.
   Mrs. Dewing was a member of the Lutheran Church of the Redeemer of Utica, the Historical Club of Ilion and was a past regent of the Mohawk Chapter of the DAR in Ilion.
   Also surviving are two sisters, Mrs. William F, Horstman and Mrs. P. N. Sturtevant, both of Terra Haute, Ind.; two grandchildren and several nieces and nephews.
   Services will be conducted Thursday at 10 a.m. in the chapel of the John S. Friedel funeral home in Utica by A. S. Keller. D.D.. pastor emeritus of the Church of the Redeemer.  
   The body will be cremated and the ashes will be buried in Fair View Cemetery, Amsterdam.
   Visiting hours at the funeral home are Tuesday and Wednesday from 7 to 9 p.m.

  Earl Nellis Hoke died at his home, Hickory Grove Inn, last Wednesday, which caused sorrow and sadness in this village. He was 37 years of age, was born and always resided in the home where he passed away. He was in this village the week before and was taken ill with influenza, which developed into pneumonia. He was of a cheerful, jolly nature, with a pleasant and kindly disposition and had a wide circle of friends. His early death is deeply regretted and deep sympathy is expressed for his wife, who is ill at their home, and his other relatives. He was a member of Evergreen Lodge, F.&A.M., and St. Mary's Church of this village. The funeral was held at his late home Saturday at 1:30 p. m., and was private. Evergreen Lodge, F.&A.M., attended in a body and had charge of the burial service. The burial was in the family plot in Lakewood Cemetery.

The wedding is to take place this fall. Mr. Hoke is well known in this village. He is proprietor of the Hickory Grove Inn, which was formerly the Four Mile Point hotel, and a very popular summer hotel.
  - Wedding Announcement (The Otsego Farmer, Cooperstown, NY, November 3, 1916)
  In Trinity Reformed church, Amsterdam, where for several years she has served as pianist, Miss Florence Rachel Shults, eldest daughter of Mr. and Mrs. Edwin J. Shults, of Amsterdam, was united in marriage, at 8 o'clock, Friday evening of last week to Earl Nellis Hoke of Cooperstown. The church was decorated with hydrangeas, running pine and autumn leaves, and in the center aisle were arches of autumn leaves and pine. The ceremony was performed by the Rev. J. Harvey Murphy.
   The bride was attired in a gown of ivory satin charmeuse, with chautilly lace and pearl trimmings, and wore a tulle veil caught up with a spray of orange blossoms. She carried a shower bouquet of white rosebuds.
   Miss Lila A. Shults, the bride's sister, was maid of honor. She wore sunshine taffeta, an overdress of satin stripe marquisette with amethyst velvet girdle and opalescent trimming, and hat of amethyst velvet and gold lace, with chin strap. Her bouquet was of golden autumn chrysanthemums, tied with sunshine chiffon and amethyst velvet loops.
   Miss Madeline B. Shults, another sister, was bridesmaid, and was gowned in orchid taffeta, trimmed with silver lace and Georgette crepe, and the hat of black velvet with silver trimming. She carried a bouquet of Mrs. Ward roses, tied with orchid ribbon. Robert Oliver Smith of Springfield Center was best man and the ushers were Louis W. Rowe, Durward S. De Groff, Percy W. Gould of Syracuse and Arthur Borck of Fort Plain.
   A reception and supper followed at the Shults home. After a Western trip Mr. Hoke and his bride will live near Cooperstown, Where Mr. Hoke is proprietor of Hickory Grove Inn. — Albany Evening Journal.

  George T. Dewing, 65, of 1002 Wayne Rd., Schenectady, died in St. Clare's Hospital Tuesday following a long illness. He was the husband of the former Florence Shults of Amsterdam.
   Mr. Dewing was born in Clayville Sept. 10, 1890, and resided in Schenectady from 1922 to 1933 when he located in Ilion where he was employed by the Sperry-Rand Corp. He returned to Schenectady to make his home after he retired in 1954.
   Besides his wife, he is survived by one son, William E. Dewing, Schenectady; a sister, Mrs. Milton D. Proctor, Portland, Me., and two grandchildren.
   The funeral will be held Friday at 2 p.m. at Baxter's funeral parlors, Schenectady, the Rev. George F. Haag of Our Saviour's Evangelical Lutheran Church officiating.

   The bride was attired in a taupe broadcloth suit with beaver trimming, and hat to match. After the ceremony Mr. Dewing and his bride left for a two weeks' wedding trip to New York and other points. They will later be at home at the Arline apartments in Herkimer. Mr. Dewing is connected with the Library Bureau at Ilion. The good wishes of their friends are extended to Mr. and Mrs. Dewing.

  William Frederick Horstman of Schenectady and Miss Madoline Barbara Shults, daughter of Mr. and Mrs. Edwin J. Shults, were married this afternoon at 4 o'clock at the home of the bride's parents, 19 Romeyn avenue, in the presence of about seventy-five guests. The Rev. George Steininger, pastor of Trinity Reformed church, officiated.
   The reception hall, living room and dining room were prettily decorated with palms, ferns and snapdragons.
   The attendants were Miss Edith Day, of Anotin, Wash., and .James McDermott of Schenectady. The bride was gowned in ivory georgette over ivory satin, with beaded trimming. She wore a tulle, veil, fastened with Swainsona, and carried a bouquet of bride's roses, with a shower of sweet peas. The bridesmaid was attired in yellow georgette, with beaded trimming, and she carried an arm bouquet of Sunset roses.
   As the bridal party descended to the living room, where the ceremony took place, the Bridal Chorus from "Lohengrin" was played by Mrs. Charles W. Clark, who also played the "Love Song" from Faust during the ceremony; and Mendelssohn's Wedding March at the close.
   Following the ceremony a buffet luncheon was served, after which Mr. and Mrs. Horstman left for a short wedding trip. They will reside in Schenectady.
   The brlde is a charming young woman, a graduate of the local High school and a member of the Kappa Epsllon sorority. She was for several years connected with The Recorder office, later taking a position with the firm of McCleary, Wallin & Crouse, where for somoe time she has been assistant manager of the shipping department. The bridegroom is a service man, who went overseas with the headquarters company, l05th Infantry, 27th division. He was twice wounded, and was awarded the Croix de Guerre. He is at present employed in the General Electric plant at Schenectady.
