- Newspaper Article (Union-Sun and Journal, Lockport, NY, Tuesday, May 24, 1921)
Leonard E. Field, aged 18, whose parents, Mr. and Mrs. Herbert S. Field, conduct the Orleans House at Albion, was so badly crushed in an accident on the South Transit road four miles south of Lockport, about 11 o'clock last night. He died at the City hospital here ar 10:15 this morning, from his injuries.
Dr. Lyman H. Wheeler, coroner, who took charge of the case learned that Field, with two other young men and two young women were riding in a Studebaker roadster to Buffalo. Field, the coroner was informed was standing on the running board of the machine, when a truck en route to Lockport, passed, hitting him and rendering him unconcious. the young man was brought to the hospital here and attended by Dr. F. A. Crosby, but failed to recover conciousness.
By the coroners directions an autopsy was held at the J. M. Kennedy undertaking rooms by Drs. Crosby and Walder which showed death due to hemmorages of the lungs and other internal injuries. The young man's left leg was also fractured.
The machine in which Field was riding was driven by Fred Ranshaw, 22 South street, this city, and besides Field contained Lawrence E. Demerly, Lancaster. The young women's names and also the name of the driver of the truck, were not learned by the coroner. He wil linvestigate the accident later.Newspaper Article (Lockport Union-Sun and Journal, Thursday, June 21, 1921)
Responsibility for the automobile accident that cost the life of Leonard E. Field, age 18, son of Mr and Mrs. Herbert S. Field of the Orleans House, Albion, on the Transit road near this city on May 21 was put squarely up to three persons, including the victim, by Coroner Lyman H Wheeler in a decision handed down today following an inquest. The other two are Fred B.
Ramshaw, driver of the roadster in which Field was a passenger, and Floyd W. Gerstung, driver of the truck, which figured in the accident. Ramshaw lives on South street, this city while Gerstung is s resident of Newfane, north of here.
"I find no evidence of criminal negligence on the part of any person, but in my opinion there is ample evidence to show that the deceased, the said Floyd W. Gerstung, driver of the truck and Fred E. Ramahaw, driver of the roadster, were negligent," Coroner Wheeler's report reads.
Field's death, the coroner says, was caused by the rupture of blood vessels in the chest and upper left leg. Shock and internal hemorrhage also contributed to the cause. Continuing, the
coroner says:
"T find that these injuries were caused by said Leonard E. Field being struck by some object which projected over or from the left side of a loaded Ford one ton truck. I find that said Leonard E. Field was riding on the left running board of a Studebaker six roadster in which there were five other occupants. The truck and car passed each other going in opposite directions.
"From this accident and others which have occurred in the past, it would seem that legislation should be enacted regulating the distance which the load of a vehicle, using a public highway, should be allowed to project over the wheel-line."
Although not mentioned in his decision Coroner Wheeler said that testimony taken indicated that the occupants of the roadster were joy-riding at the time of the crash and were bound for Buffalo.
